Populism as a pathological form of politics of recognition

2018

This article combines the neo-Hegelian theory of recognition with an analysis of social pathologies to show how the populist formulations of political goals in struggles for recognition are – despite their potential positive motivating force – socially pathological. The concept of recognition, combined with the idea of social pathologies, can thus be used to introduce normative considerations into the populism analysis. In this article it is argued that, although populism is useful in the sense that it aims to ameliorate real experienced lack of recognition through fostering political movements, it is also harmful. The simplified populist representations of collective identities are often g…

A scoping review exploration of the intended and unintended consequences of eHeath on older people : a health equity impact assessment

2018

eHealth is one perceived mechanism to extend the range and reach of limited health-care resources for older adults. A decade-scoping review (2007–2017) was conducted to systematically search and synthesize evidence to understand the intended and unintended consequences of eHealth initiatives, informed by a health equity impact assessment framework. Scoping review sources included international academic and grey literature on eHealth initiatives (e.g., eHealth records, telemedicine/telecare, and mobile eHealth application) focused on the varying needs of older adults (aged 60+), particularly individuals experiencing sociocultural and economic difficulties. Findings suggest that eHealth has s…

Long-Term Breastfeeding: The Embodied Experiences of Finnish Mothers

2019

Mothers’ experiences constitute a central and widely discussed issue within feminist breastfeeding research. Less is said however, about long-term breastfeeding in relation to embodiment. This article analyses the embodied experiences of Finnish mothers who have breastfed for over a year. Through a feminist lens, and an inductive qualitative content analysis, the written accounts of 39 long-term breastfeeding mothers were analysed, to show how mothers reflect on embodiment while breastfeeding long-term. Mothers described their embodied experiences in relation to four themes: functionality of the body; tiredness; beauty norms; and pleasure. The study reveals their accounts of bodily changes …

Nevertheless, access to this type ofconsumption experience is not systematic and the visitor'simmersion does not seem permanent. In this article, we of-fer a better understanding of the park experience. Buildingon the analysis of 41 introspective diaries of theme parkvisitors, we identify states of immersion but also other ex-perienced states (submersion, emersion, reject). Understanding space in ephemeral organizations: contributions of commented walksThis article examines a particular type of ephemeral organization in which institutional and secular actors are connected resting upon on a strong territorial basis. Their fleeting quality is however compatible with a certain degree of permanency. The authors question the sources and resources of such permanency and insist on the role of space in coordinating collective action, and in this case, in preventing urban incivilities. They call on an unusual method, called Commented Walks, to capture the relation between such organizations and space.

Finnish reform of the funding and provision of special education : the views of principals and municipal education administrators

2015

This study examines the current state of special education provision and resources in Finland after the extensive reform of the government transfer system and Basic Education Act implemented in 2010–2011. Data were collected from a survey of compulsory school principals and from interviews with the highest-ranking officials in municipal education administration. The results show that participants viewed the Basic Education Act as having a more significant impact on the provision of special education than the reform of the government transfer system. Partly due to the reforms, local authorities have targeted the resources of special education differently and used resources more effectively. …
