Evidence of a contralateral motor influence on reciprocal inhibition in man

1992

The role of contralateral movement on both H reflex and reciprocal inhibition was studied. In normal men H reflex was induced by median nerve stimulation. Reciprocal inhibition was achieved through stimulation of the antagonist radial nerve. On this basis the effects of contralateral arm movement were analized. Furthermore the putative influence of exteroceptive origin was also verified by means of digit stimulation. Results showed that contralateral arm movement did not affect H reflex amplitude; on the contrary, it was able to enhance reciprocal inhibition induced by extensors on flexors. Study of cutaneous afferents demonstrated that contralateral digit stimulation failed to elicit modif…

Brain tissue pO2 related to SjvO2, ICP, and CPP in severe brain injury

2000

The aim of this report is to present first experience in comparing the course of brain tissue oxygen pressure values (PtiO2) to changes in jugular vein oxygen saturation (SjvO2), intracranial pressure (ICP), and cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) after severe brain injury. PtiO2 monitoring was done using a polarographic Clark type microcatheter (LICOX pO2 probe) (GMS, Kiel, Germany) with a diameter of 0.5 mm and a sensitive area 7.9 mm long inserted in a right frontal position. The microcatheter was connected to a LICOX pO2 device. A fiber-optic catheter was used to measure SjvO2 and placed into the right internal jugular vein. The ICP monitoring was performed with a fiber-optic intraparench…

Body shape trajectories and risk of breast cancer: results from the SUN ('Seguimiento Universidad De Navarra') Project.

2021

AbstractObjective:The aim of this study was to assess body shape trajectories in childhood and midlife in relation to subsequent risk of breast cancer (BC) in a Mediterranean cohort.Design:The ‘Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra’ (SUN) Project is a dynamic prospective cohort study of university graduates initiated in 1999. With a group-based modelling approach, we assessed body shape trajectories from age 5 to 40 years. Multivariable Cox regression models were used to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) for BC after the age of 40 years according to the body shape trajectory.Setting:City of Pamplona, in the North of Spain.Participants:6498 women with a mean age of 40 years (sd9).Results:We identi…

Exploring the reciprocal modulation of time and space in dancers and non-dancers.

2014

We explored whether time and space representations modulate each other in subjects that are trained to integrate time and space dimensions, i.e., professional dancers. A group of dancers, and one of non-dancers, underwent two different tasks employing identical stimuli. A first static central line could last one of three possible durations and could have one of three possible lengths. A second growing line appeared from the left or right of the screen and grew up toward the opposite direction at constant velocity. In the Spatial task, subjects encoded the length of the static line and stopped the growing line when it had reached half the length of the static one, regardless of time travel. …

The Cycle of Violence: Examining Attitudes Toward and Experiences of Corporal Punishment in a Representative German Sample

2018

The use of corporal punishment (CP) is controversial despite the negative consequences of its use that have been documented. Consequences include the use of CP by those who experienced CP themselves, described in the theory of the cycle of violence. There are little data on the cycle of violence, especially on those who break it and in representative samples. This study examines the cycle of violence in a representative sample by analyzing experiences of and attitudes toward CP. Attitudes toward, and own experiences of, CP by their parents were assessed in a sample of 2,519 individuals (female 54.6%, age range = 14-99 years, M = 48.9 years). Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to identify…

A morphometric study on sural nerves in metachromatic leucodystrophy.

1987

This study reexamines peripheral neuropathy in infantile, juvenile and adult metachromatic leuco-dystrophy. A computer-assisted method was used which gives more detailed information on abnormal fibre structure from scatter diagrams of the g ratio (axon diameter/fibre diameter). The data show marked and statistically significant reductions in sheath thickness, particularly for the thick myelinated fibres, and most severe in the juvenile and adult forms. This is interpreted as evidence of remodelling of virtually the entire fibre population, without a clear-cut selectivity for either thin or thick fibres.

Type of culture media does not affect embryo kinetics: a time-lapse analysis of sibling oocytes

2013

Are the morphokinetics of growing embryos affected by the type of culture media utilized?Morphokinetic parameters used for embryo selection are not affected between the two different concept culture media analyzed.Studies on the effect of culture media on human embryos have focused on evaluating different in-house and commercially available media as well as comparing outcomes among different commercial media. Nonetheless, the evaluation of embryo development in these studies was based on static observations and very little is known from a dynamic point of view.Prospective cohort study, October 2010 and April 2011.University-affiliated infertility center. Psychometric evaluations of the Life Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R), based on nine samples

2021

The aim of this study was to examine psychometric properties of the Life Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R).The LOT-R was administered in five clinical samples, three samples of the adult general population, and one sample of adolescents. Seven of the studies were performed in Germany and two in Colombia. All of the sample sizes were above 300.Cronbach's alpha coefficients were between .57 and .75 for the eight adult samples, the correlations between the scales optimism and pessimism ranged from -.05 to -.37, and the coefficients of temporal stability (test-retest correlations) of the scales ranged from .43 to .69. There were no systematic age and gender effects observed in the nine studies. …

Translation, adaptation and psychometric validation of the preterm birth experience and satisfaction scale (P-BESS) into Spanish.

2018

Abstract Background Preterm labour and birth are two of the most important issues in perinatal care. The birth of a preterm baby is often a stressful and traumatic time for parents. Assessment of satisfaction with maternity services is crucial and questionnaires are the most common method as long as they are well-constructed. Only one, The Preterm Birth Experience and Satisfaction Scale (P-BESS), developed in United Kingdom, has been designed for this specific birth type. Objectives To translate, transculturally adapt and assess the psychometric properties of the P-BESS into Spanish. Design Cross-sectional study. Setting Maternity unit of a tertiary level hospital in Spain. Participants A t…
