Data from: Size-selective harvesting fosters adaptations in mating behavior and reproductive allocation, affecting sexual selection in fish

2019

1. The role of sexual selection in the context of harvest-induced evolution is poorly understood. However, elevated and trait-selective harvesting of wild populations may change sexually-selected traits, which in turn can affect mate choice and reproduction. 2. We experimentally evaluated the potential for fisheries-induced evolution of mating behavior and reproductive allocation in fish. 3. We used a unique experimental system of zebrafish (Danio rerio) lines exposed to large, small, or random (i.e. control) size-selective mortality. The large-harvested line represented a treatment simulating the typical case in fisheries where the largest individuals are preferentially harvested. We used …

Do pomiaru pięciu czynników osobowości wykorzystano dziesięciopunktowy spis osobowości (TIPI). Do pomiaru orientacji czasowej wykorzystano Kwestionariusz Percepcji Czasu Zimbardo (ZTPI), a do pomiaru siły woli wykorzystano Kwestionariusz Kontroli Start-Stop. W analizach statystycznych zastosowano analizę regresji hierarchicznej i modelowanie równań struktur…

Sexism and Aggression in Adolescence.¿How Do They Relate to Perceived Academic Achievement?

2018

Sexist attitudes are rooted in patriarchal structures, which uphold traditional gender stereotypes, and which are still found in society today. Scholars have found gender differences in perceived academic achievement, with girls performing better than boys, and negative relationships between sexism and perceived academic achievement. Moreover, perceived academic achievement and sexist attitudes have been associated with aggression and different kinds of violence. This study examined the associations between sexist attitudes and perceived academic achievement (using self-report data). The study also assessed the mediating role of physical and verbal aggression in the relationship between sex…

Plumage colour and male-male interactions in the pied flycatcher

1993

Abstract Abstract. The influence of male colour on male-male interactions in the pied flycatcher, Ficedula hypoleuca , was studied using several types of field experiments. This species exhibits delayed plumage maturation, each male becoming more conspicuously black and white from the first to the second breeding summer. However, individual males vary even more, some old males being as brown as females. When territorial males were presented with a choice between brown and black male intruders (or brown males painted black) they directed more aggression towards the black males. Brown plumage did not help males obtain nestboxes close to other males. If anything browner males were at a disadva…

Factors Affecting Interspecific Aggression in a Year-Round Territorial Species, the Jewel Damselfish

2012

Vertebrates live in complex species networks in which interspecific interactions are common. In some contexts, the aggressive behaviours shown in these interspecific interactions are very similar to those shown in intraspecific interactions. It is still an open question whether intra- and interspecific aggression share common causality. We studied a year-round territorial species the jewel damselfish, (Plectroglyphidodon lacrymatus), which cultivate algae they feed on. Territory holders aggressively defend these algae that are an attractive resource for many other species. In this study, we recorded territorial aggression in free-living individuals and recorded aggressive responses to a sta…

Parasite-induced aggression and impaired contest ability in a fish host

2010

Abstract Background Success of trophically transmitted parasites depends to a great extent on their ability to manipulate their intermediate hosts in a way that makes them easier prey for target hosts. Parasite-induced behavioural changes are the most spectacular and diverse examples of manipulation. Most of the studies have been focused on individual behaviour of hosts including fish. We suggest that agonistic interactions and territoriality in fish hosts may affect their vulnerability to predators and thus the transmission efficiency of trophically transmitted parasites. The parasite Diplostomum spathaceum (Trematoda) and juvenile rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, were used to study whe…
