Up-regulation of an N-terminal truncated 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl CoA reductase enhances production of essential oils and sterols in transgenic Lav…

2007

Spike lavender (Lavandula latifolia) essential oil is widely used in the perfume, cosmetic, flavouring and pharmaceutical industries. Thus, modifications of yield and composition of this essential oil by genetic engineering should have important scientific and commercial applications. We generated transgenic spike lavender plants expressing the Arabidopsis thaliana HMG1 cDNA, encoding the catalytic domain of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl CoA reductase (HMGR1S), a key enzyme of the mevalonic acid (MVA) pathway. Transgenic T0 plants accumulated significantly more essential oil constituents as compared to controls (up to 2.1- and 1.8-fold in leaves and flowers, respectively). Enhanced expression …

Impaired cellular cholesterol efflux by oxysterol-enriched high density lipoproteins.

1997

One of the proposed antiatherogenicity role of high-density lipoproteins (HDL) is believed to stimulate removal of cholesterol from the peripheral cells back to the liver for excretion. We have investigated the effects of oxidation-related modifications of HDL on their ability to stimulate cholesterol efflux from cultured cells. Human HDL (HDL3, 1.13 < d < 1.21 g/ml) have been modified either by malondialdehyde or by copper-mediated oxidation (Ox-HDL3). Compared with native HDL3, the modified HDL3 resulted in a significantly reduced efflux of labeled cholesterol from preloaded macrophages (P388D1 cell line). Analysis of lipid composition of Ox-HDL3 by gas chromatography revealed the presenc…

Day case oral surgery in pediatric patients during the year 2000 in the University of Barcelona Dental Clinic (Spain)

2005

Artificial mosaics

2005

Art often provides valuable insight that can be applied to technological innovations, especially in the fields of image processing and computer graphics. In this paper we present a method to transform a raster input image into a good-quality mosaic: an “artificial mosaic.” The creation of mosaics of artistic quality is challenging because the tiles that compose a mosaic, typically small polygons, must be packed tightly and yet must follow and emphasize orientations chosen by the artist. The proposed method can reproduce the colors of the original image and emphasize relevant boundaries by placing tiles along edge directions. No user intervention is needed to detect the boundaries: they are …

A Simple Operating Strategy of Small-Scale Battery Energy Storages for Energy Arbitrage under Dynamic Pricing Tariffs

2015

Price arbitrage involves taking advantage of an electricity price difference, storing electricity during low-prices times, and selling it back to the grid during high-prices periods. This strategy can be exploited by customers in presence of dynamic pricing schemes, such as hourly electricity prices, where the customer electricity cost may vary at any hour of day, and power consumption can be managed in a more flexible and economical manner, taking advantage of the price differential. Instead of modifying their energy consumption, customers can install storage systems to reduce their electricity bill, shifting the energy consumption from on-peak to off-peak hours. This paper develops a deta…

School administrators’ perceptions of democratic coexistence in Catalan schools: An analytical study

2022

In democratic societies, education should help build a participative, critical and responsible citizenry and therefore promote the role of schools as settings where students learn democratic coexistence. With the study reported on here we aimed to analyse how coexistence is fostered in classrooms and schools, as well as the possible synergy between schools’ efforts to educate in democratic coexistence, and the children’s social participation in their setting. To do so, we focused on the perspective of 476 school administrators at schools in Catalonia (Spain) based on an ad-hoc questionnaire comprised of 22 items on a Likert scale. The results reflect settings that value democratic coexisten…

Synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic properties of [Cu(bpym)(mal)(H2O)]·6H2O and [Cu2(bpym)(mal)2(H2O)2]·4H2O (bpym=2,2′-bipyrimidine, H2mal=mal…

2001

Abstract Two new mixed-ligand complexes of formula [Cu(bpym)(mal)(H2O)]·6H2O (1) and [Cu2(bpym)(mal)2(H2O)2]·4H2O (2) (bpym=2,2′-bipyrimidine and H2mal=malonic acid) have been synthesised and characterised by X-ray diffraction methods. The crystal structure of 1 consists of mononuclear [Cu(bpym)(mal)(H2O)] units in which the copper atom shows a slightly distorted square-pyramidal environment with two bpym-nitrogen and two malonate-oxygen atoms forming the equatorial plane and a water molecule in the axial position. The structure of 2 is built by centrosymmetric bpym-bridged dinuclear [Cu2(bpym)(mal)2(H2O)2] units, in which the geometry of each Cu(II) ion is similar to that found in 1. Malon…

Asymmetric [N–I–N]+ halonium complexes

2020

The first asymmetric halogen-bonded iodonium complexes [I(py)(4-DMAP)]PF6 (2c) and [I(py)(4-Etpy)]PF6 (2e) were prepared via [N–Ag–N]+ → [N–I–N]+ cation exchange of their analogous 2-coordinate silver complexes. The complexes were characterised by 1H and 1H–15N HMBC NMR spectroscopy, and single crystal X-ray crystallography.

Alternating cationic–anionic layers in the [Mii(H2O)6][Cuii(mal)2(H2O)] complexes linked through hydrogen bonds (M = Mn, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn; H2mal = m…

2002

The compounds of formula [MII(H2O)6][CuII(mal)2(H2O)2] [M = Mn (1), Co (2), Ni (3), Cu (4), Zn (5) and H2mal = malonic acid] have been prepared and structurally characterised. Each compound adopts a structure where the layers of [Cu(mal)2(H2O)2]2− anions alternate with layers of [M(H2O)6]2+ cations. The layers are linked to each other through hydrogen bonds affording a three-dimensional network. A quasi-Curie law behaviour is observed for the complexes 1–5 in the temperature range 2.0–298 K.
