Epidemiology of intensive care unit-acquired sepsis in Italy: Results of the SPIN-UTI network

2018

Background. Sepsis is the major cause of mortality from any infectious disease worldwide. Sepsis may be the result of a healthcare associated infection (HAI): the most frequent adverse events during care delivery especially in Intensive Care Units (ICUs). The main aim of the present study was to describe the epidemiology of ICU-acquired sepsis and related outcomes among patients enrolled in the framework of the Italian Nosocomial Infections Surveillance in ICUs - SPIN-UTI project. Study design. Prospective multicenter study. Methods. The SPIN-UTI network adopted the European protocols for patient-based HAI surveillance. Results. During the five editions of the SPIN-UTI project, from 2008 to…

P-70REPEATED SOCIAL STRESS REVERSED ETHANOL-INDUCED CONDITIONED PLACE AVERSION IN MALE MICE

2015

Exposure to stressors can produce behavioural and neurochemical adaptations that render individuals more prone to drug-seeking and drug-taking behaviours. It is well know that stress experiences are a risk factor for alcohol abuse in humans and recent studies in animal models reported that repeated social stress increased alcohol consumption. The aim of the present work is to evaluate the long-term …

Solubility of Quercetin in Wines

2022

Quercetin solubility at 18 °C and 0 °C was determined in an hydroalcoholic buffer solution with pH 3.20 and in four Italian wines to study the formation of quercetin precipitate mechanism in wines. The wines selected were Barbera 2018 for the typically high content in bisulfite bleachable pigments, red Cirò 2014, for its typically high content of flavonoids, Sangiovese 2014, for the presence of quercetin deposits in bottle, and white Cirò 2018, for the absence of red pigments. All the samples were spiked with 30 mg/L quercetin. The amount of quercetin solubilized at 18 °C and 0 °C in the hydroalcoholic buffer was much lower than in wines, while that solubilised in Barbera was much higher co…

The conversion from cellulose I to cellulose II in NaOH mercerization performed in alcohol–water systems: An X-ray powder diffraction study

2007

Abstract The slurry-mercerization (SM) processes in 2-propanol–water and 2-propanol–ethanol–water and wet-mass-mercerization (WMM) process in ethanol–water solvents are investigated. Based on X-ray diffraction measurements in the earlier reports, we have derived a mathematical method to evaluate more exactly the conversion of cellulose I (CI) to cellulose II (CII) and used it to survey the effects of different alkali treatments on cellulose crystals. This method is very useful when the crystal system changes in a certain set of experiments are compared with each other. The optimal alcohol concentration in SM processes was found to be 80–92 w/w-% in 2-propanol–water solution, 85–90 w/w-% in …

The crime of consumption of alcoholic beverages in the Somali Penal Code

2021

Somalia is a Muslim country whose criminal law has been based on the 1930 Italian penal code to which some changes have been made to try to adapt it to the local context. One of these changes has been to introduce the crime of consumption of alcoholic beverages, a crime that anyway could be committed only by local Somali people due to their religious belief. This chapter analyzes this part of the Somali penal code trying to highlight the issues arising from the text of the law. The analysis is compared to the regime existing in the other Muslim African countries to understand similarities and differences with the Somali regulation. A conclusion is then drawn up also in view of a possible fu…
