Long-term land-based and internal forcing of the nutrient state of the Gulf of Riga (Baltic Sea)

Abstract The long-term nutrient trends (N, P, Si) in the Gulf of Riga and their driving factors were studied based on monitoring data from 1974 to 2000. Each nutrient showed individual temporal behaviour. The nitrate-N pool peaked in 1989–1990, but after that, the increasing trend switched to a decrease. The P pool, in turn, constantly increased till the mid-1990s; afterwards, a tendency was unclear. The obvious depletion of the silicate-Si pool reversed after 1995. Algal growth limitation responded to the changes in the nutrient pool. The invasive growth of the introduced green alga Caulerpa taxifolia, already affecting the richness and diversity of the littoral ecosystems, has become a major ecological problem in the Mediterranean Sea. Previously, we demonstrated that the water pollutant tributyltin induces apoptosis in tissue of the marine sponge Geodia cydonium at concentrations of 3 μM and higher. Here we show that exposure of G. cydonium to low (non-toxic) concentrations of Caulerpa extract or purified caulerpin (10 μg/ml) together with low doses of tributyltin (1 μM; non-toxic), results in a strong apoptotic effect. Dinoflagellates from marine algal blooms produce neurotoxic compounds: effects on free calcium levels in neuronal cells and synaptosomes

In this report, evidence is presented that the marine unicellular eukaryotic dinoflagellates can cause neurotoxicity very likely by an increase in intracellular free calcium ions ([Ca(2+)](i)). Determinations of the effects of culture supernatants from different clones of the dinoflagellate Alexandrium sp. isolated from algal blooms on the viability of rat primary neuronal cells revealed that all clones tested were toxic for these cells. In addition, all Alexandrium clones tested, except for A. ostenfeldii BAH ME-141, were found to be toxic for rat pheochromocytoma PC12 cells. Modifications in soluble proteomes and PST contents were characterized in two Mediterranean A. pacificum strains exposed to mono- or polymetallic stresses (zinc, lead, copper, cadmium). These strains were isolated from two anthropized locations: Santa Giusta Lagoon (Italy, SG C10-3) and the Tarragona seaport (Spain, TAR C5-4F). Early warning systems for monitoring toxic events may benefit from the availability of monoclonal antibodies enabling the sensitive and specific detection of anatoxin-a, a cyanotoxin involved in numerous cases of animal poisoning resulting from toxic algal blooms in freshwaters. Through the synthesis of three functionalized derivatives of anatoxin-a, we have succeeded in generating the first-ever reported immunoreagents (bioconjugates and antibodies) suitable for the development of immunoanalytical approaches aimed at rapid and onsite detection of this harmful cyanotoxin.
Seasonal and spatial heterogeneity in the water chemistry of two sewage-affected saline shallow lakes from central Spain

The seasonal features of the water chemistry in the saline shallow lakes Laguna de Manjavacas and Laguna del Pueblo (Castilla – La Mancha, Central Spain) were studied during 1990–1991 and in 1997. These lakes were both affected by sewage inputs driving them to a high trophic status. However, whereas sewage inputs entered Laguna del Pueblo directly, wastewater reached Laguna de Manjavacas after running for 8 km through a small riverbed, where natural processes caused partial mineralisation of organic matter. Microbial communities promptly respond to the environmental perturbations, especially in the Arctic and sub-Arctic systems that are highly impacted by climate change, and fluctuations in the diversity level of microbial assemblages could give insights on their expected response. 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing was applied to describe the bacterial community composition in water and sediment through the sub-Arctic Pasvik River.
