Multiproject–multicenter evaluation of automatic brain tumor classification by magnetic resonance spectroscopy

[EN] Automatic brain tumor classification by MRS has been under development for more than a decade. Nonetheless, to our knowledge, there are no published evaluations of predictive models with unseen cases that are subsequently acquired in different centers. The multicenter eTUMOUR project (2004-2009), which builds upon previous expertise from the INTERPRET project (2000-2002) has allowed such an evaluation to take place. A total of 253 pairwise classifiers for glioblastoma, meningioma, metastasis, and low-grade glial diagnosis were inferred based on 211 SV short TE INTERPRET MR spectra obtained at 1.5 T (PRESS or STEAM, 20-32 ms) and automatically pre-processed. Clustering ball possession duration according to players’ role in football small-sided games

This study aimed to explore which offensive variables best discriminate the ball possession duration according to players specific role (defenders, midfielders, attackers) during a Gk+3vs3+Gk football small-sided games. Fifteen under-15 players (age 13.2±1.0 years, playing experience 4.2±1.0 years) were grouped according to their positions (team of defenders, n = 5; team of midfielders, n = 7; team of attackers, n = 3). Prenatal Ultrasound Screening: False Positive Soft Markers May Alter Maternal Representations and Mother-Infant Interaction

Background In up to 5% of pregnancies, ultrasound screening detects a “soft marker” (SM) that places the foetus at risk for a severe abnormality. In most cases, prenatal diagnostic work-up rules out a severe defect. We aimed to study the effects of false positive SM on maternal emotional status, maternal representations of the infant, and mother-infant interaction. Assessing directional interactions among multiple physiological time series: The role of instantaneous causality

This paper deals with the assessment of frequency domain causality in multivariate (MV) time series with significant instantaneous interactions. After providing different causality definitions, we introduce an extended MV autoregressive modeling approach whereby each definition is described in the time domain in terms of the model coefficients, and is quantified in the frequency domain by means of novel measures of directional connectivity. A challenge for physiologists and neuroscientists is to map information transfer between components of the systems that they study at different scales, in order to derive important knowledge on structure and function from the analysis of the recorded dynamics. Decomposing the transfer entropy to quantify lag-specific Granger causality in cardiovascular variability.

We present a modification of the well known transfer entropy (TE) which makes it able to detect, besides the direction and strength of the information transfer between coupled processes, its exact timing. The approach follows a decomposition strategy which identifies--according to a lag-specific formulation of the concept of Granger causality--the set of time delays carrying significant information, and then assigns to each of these delays an amount of information transfer such that the total contribution yields the overall TE. Algorithms for the inference of causality in dynamic processes: Application to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular variability

This study faces the problem of causal inference in multivariate dynamic processes, with specific regard to the detection of instantaneous and time-lagged directed interactions. We point out the limitations of the traditional Granger causality analysis, showing that it leads to false detection of causality when instantaneous and time-lagged effects coexist in the process structure. Then, we propose an improved algorithm for causal inference that combines the Granger framework with the approach proposed by Pearl for the study of causality among multiple random variables. Aim of the present review is to offer an outline of the application of T-pattern analysis (TPA) in the study of neurological disorders characterized by anomalies of movement and, more in general, of behavior. TPA is a multivariate technique to detect real time patterns of behavior on the basis of statistically significant constraints among the events in sequence.
