Silver Impregnation of Alzheimer's Neurofibrillary Changes Counterstained for Basophilic Material and Lipofuscin Pigment

1988

A method is described in which selective silver staining of Alzheimer's neurofibrillary changes is combined with staining of cell nuclei, Nissl material, and lipofuscin granules. Formalin fixed, paraffin embedded sections of human autopsy tissue are silver stained according to a method proposed by Gallyas. Lipofuscin is stained by crotonaldehyde fuchsin following performic acid oxidation. Nissl substance is visualized by either Darrow red or gallocyanin-chrome alum staining. Architectonic units showing the specific pathology and the neuronal types prone to develop the neurofibrillary changes can be recognized using this technique.

Comparative Biological Properties and Mineralization Potential of 3 Endodontic Materials for Vital Pulp Therapy: Theracal PT, Theracal LC, and Bioden…

2021

INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to assess the biological properties and mineralization potential of the new Theracal PT (Bisco Inc, Schaumburg, IL) compared with its predecessor Theracal LC (Bisco Inc) and the hydraulic silicate-based cement Biodentine (Septodont, Saint-Maur-des-Fosses, France) on human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) in vitro. METHODS Standardized sample discs were obtained for each material (n = 30) together with 1:1, 1:2, and 1:4 material eluates. Previously characterized hDPSCs were cultured with the different materials in standardized conditions, and the following assays were performed: a 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay, a woun…

H-Point Standard Addition Method Applied to Voltammetry of Microparticles. Quantitation of Dyes in Pictorial Samples

2007

A solid-state electrochemical application of the H-point standard addition method (HPSAM) for quantifying two electroactive compounds, A, B, that produce strongly overlapped voltammetric peaks is described. It is based on peak current measurement in square-wave voltammograms recorded for solid samples containing a reference compound R, upon additions of a A- (or B-) containing standard compound. The method allows to the determination of the mass fraction of A and B by applying the H-point standard addition method to solid state voltammetry. The quotients between the currents measured at two selected potentials and the peak current of R vary linearly with the mass ratio of the added standard…

How deprotonation changes molecular self-assembly – an AFM study in liquid environment

2013

We study the influence of Alizarin Red S deprotonation on molecular self-assembly at the solid-liquid interface of the natural cleavage plane of calcite immersed in aqueous solution. To elucidate the adsorption details, we perform pH dependent high-resolution atomic force microscopy measurements. When Alizarin Red S is deposited onto calcite(10.4) in a liquid environment at an acidic pH of 5, weakly bound, ordered islands with a (3 x 3) superstructure are observed. A sharp structural transition is revealed when increasing the pH above 8. Above this pH, stable needle-like structures oriented along the [01.0] direction form on the surface. Comparing these results with potentiometric titration…

Comparative study of eco- and cytotoxicity during biotransformation of anthraquinone dye Alizarin Blue Black B in optimized cultures of microscopic f…

2017

The aim of this study was to select optimal conditions (C and N sources, initial pH and temperature) for biodecolorization of 0.03% anthraquinone dye Alizarin Blue Black B (ABBB) by microscopic fungi: Haematonectria haematococca BwIII43, K37 and Trichoderma harzianum BsIII33. The phenolic compounds, phytotoxicity (Lepidium sativum L.), biotoxicity (Microtox), cytotoxicity and yeast viability assay were performed to determine the extent of ABBB detoxification. Biodecolorization and detoxification of 0.03% ABBB in H. haematococca BwIII43 and T. harzianum BsIII33 cultures was correlated with extracellular oxidoreductases activity. In turn, secondary products, toxic to human fibroblasts and res…

The relationship between stocking eggs in boreal spawning rivers and the abundance of brown trout parr

2015

Abstract Stocking with eggs has been widely used as a management measure to support degraded salmonid stocks. In Finland, Atlantic salmon and both sea-migrating and lake-migrating brown trout are stocked as eggs, alevins, fry, parr, and smolt, whereas trout are also stocked as mature fish. The aim of this stocking is to improve catches and to support collapsed spawning stocks. We assessed the success of stocking with brown trout eggs in a study of 17 Finnish boreal forest rivers, of which 9 were subject to egg stocking. All rivers contained some naturally spawning trout. In 16 rivers, including non-stocking years and unstocked rivers, egg stocking did not increase the total (wild and stocke…

Automation of the determination of hydrogen peroxide, dichromate, formaldehyde and bicarbonate in milk by flow injection analysis

1992

Automatic flow injection methods for the determination of hydrogen peroxide, dichromate, formaldehyde and bicarbonate in dairy products are proposed. They are based on reaction with vanadium pentoxide, diphenyl-carbazide, fuchsine-sulphur dioxide and alizarin, respectively. Sample pre-treatment (paper and membrane filtration, dialysis) is widely discussed for on-line incorporation. The usefulness of these methods was tested by applying them to different commercial samples, satisfactory results being obtained in all instances.

Inkjet printing Ag nanoparticles for SERS hot spots

2018

A novel inkjet printing based approach is developed for the fabrication of a customizable platform on glass substrates allowing for surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) detection of analytes up to single hot spots generated by the spontaneous aggregation of Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) in pL scale droplets. After drying the printed droplets under ambient conditions, trace amounts of the analyte can be detected by SERS given the proximity to NP hot spots. By employing alizarin (10-5M) as a model system and scaling the ink droplet volume from 1 nL to 10 pL, the absolute quantity of hot spots has been derived in the printed droplets allowing detecting up to a few molecules in proximity to i…

In situ AFM study of proton-assisted electrochemical oxidation/reduction of microparticles of organic dyes

2008

In situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) images of crystals of organic dyes alizarin, indigo and morin have been monitored during the course of their solid-state electrochemical oxidation/reduction in contact with aqueous acetate buffer. Such images indicate that proton-assisted reduction and oxidation processes are localized in a shallow layer in the vicinity of the particle/electrolyte interface, in agreement with expectances from the Lovric and Scholz model with significantly restricted proton diffusion across the solids.
