Areno-Condensed 1,7,13-Triaza[18]annulenes
2002
The 1,7,13-triaza[18]annulenes 9a−c were prepared by multi-step processes in which the final step consisted of a threefold cyclic condensation reaction of the Schiff bases 8a−c. Due to the length of the nine peripheral alkoxy chains, discotic liquid crystalline phases were obtained for 9b,c. The three nitrogen atoms in the central 18-membered ring not only permit protonation, but they can also serve for the complexation of NH4+ ions. The compounds 9a−c are highly photosensitive and exhibit crosslinking reactions on irradiation.
Arylethynyl-Substituted Tristriazolotriazines: Synthesis, Optical Properties, and Thermotropic Behavior
2014
The synthesis of C3-symmetrical tristriazolotriazines with conjugated arms and lateral alkoxy side chains was performed by a threefold condensation of cyanuric chloride with tetrazoles. Conjugated π segments include phenyl, tolane, and its phenylethynyl-elongated homologue. Disclike and a dendritic molecule have been obtained, and two compounds with a 3,4,5-tris(octyloxy) substitution form broad thermotropic mesophases. The linear optical properties, solvatochromism of the fluorescence, acidochromism, and the two-photon absorption efficiency of selected compounds are reported.
Assigning the C-15 configuration of 15-hydroxy-, 15-methoxy-, 15-ethoxy-hexahydrofurofuran neoclerodane diterpenoids
2004
Abstract Examination of 1 H and 13 C NMR spectra allows the establishment of rules for assigning the correct configuration at C-15 of 15-hydroxy-, 15-methoxy-, 15-ethoxy-hexahydrofurofuran neoclerodane diterpenoids. The structure of several diterpenoids has been assigned or ammended.
Performance of a series of novel N-substituted acrylamides in capillary electrophoresis of DNA fragments
1996
DNA separations by capillary electrophoresis in viscous solutions of novel polymers, made with Ω-hydroxyl, N-substituted acrylamides (notably N-acryloyl amino propanol, AAP and N-acryloyl amino butanol, AAB) are evaluated. Whereas in standard poly(acrylamide), at 6% concentration, the theoretical plate number (N) does not exceed 500 000, in 6% poly(AAP) N reaches 922 000 and in 6% poly(AAB) N values as high as 1 200 000 are obtained. Also, copolymers of AAP and AAB give N values in excess of 1 million plates. The two novel monomers (AAP and AAB) remain extremely stable during alkaline hydrolysis and display very good hydrophilicity, while being devoid of the noxious habit of auto-polymeriza…
ChemInform Abstract: Synthesis of Areno-Condensed [24]Annulenes.
2010
[24]Annulenes condensed with three phenanthrene units (11a−d) or with three chrysene ring systems (22) were prepared by multi-step syntheses. The cyclic condensation reaction in the final step led to highly symmetrical compounds. Long flexible alkoxy groups attached to the periphery enhance the solubility and give rise to a strong aggregation of the molecules which was observed in solution by NMR and fluorescence excitation spectroscopy, and in the pure state by the detection of liquid crystalline phases in differential scanning calorimetry and polarization microscopy.

Liquid crystals in the series of 2,4,6-tristyryl-1,3,5-triazines
2004
Abstract Alkaline condensation reactions of 2,4,6-trimethyl-1,3,5-triazine ( 1 ) and substituted benzaldehydes ( 2a – n ) yield 2,4,6-tristyryl-1,3,5-triazines ( 3a – n ). A sufficient number and length of the alkoxy chains at the benzene rings provide liquid crystalline phases Col hd . A special structure was found for compound 3i with 9 hexyloxy chains; it exists in the solid state in a helical columnar arrangement, which is transformed by heating to a hexagonal columnar mesophase. Irradiation of the mesophases of 3i – 3m leads to partial cyclodimerization reactions, which cause different textures and lower the clearing points. The border line between the irradiated and the unirradiated z…
Mesomorphic Donor-Acceptor-substituted 1,4-Distyrylbenzenes
2009
Conjugated oligomers with terminal donor-acceptor substitution attract increasing attention in organic chemistry because of their outstanding and not seldom unexpected properties in materials science [1 – 4]. Although a variety of oligo(1,4-phenylene-vinylene)s with terminal donor-acceptor substitution (DAOPVs 1, Scheme 1) are known [5 – 22], the number of thermotropic liquid crystals among them is very low and is confined to monomers (n = 1), that means to certain push-pull substituted (E)-stilbenes [23 – 31]. The behavior of conjugatedmolecules, which are highly polar and form mesophases by self-organization, is very interesting for various applications of liquid crystals [3]. A big disad…
ChemInform Abstract: Carbazole Synthesis via an in situ Trapping Strategy with Indolyl Enol Ethers.
2010
Indolyl enol ethers, generated from the alkoxy(indolyl)carbenium tetra- fluoroborates (1) by treatment with sodium hydride, can be trapped with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate or N-phenylmaleimide to furnish the se- lectively functionalized carbazoles (3), (4), (5), (9), (10), and (13). In addition, the biaryl derivatives (6) and (11) are produced by a ring- opening reaction of the primarily formed Diels-Alder adduct. In the case of the biaryl derivative (6), an X-ray crystal structure analysis yields valuable information on constitutions and configurations in the biaryl series. The phenomenon of atropisomerism is discussed for this compound
A theoretical study of the addition of CH3MgCl to chiral α-alkoxy carbonyl compounds
1998
Abstract A theoretical characterisation of the addition of CH 3 MgCl to the carbonyl group of 2-hydroxypropanal and 3,4-di- O -methyl-1- O -trimethylsilyl- l -erythrulose has been carried out. The PM3 semiempirical procedure and the ab initio method at HF level of theory with the 3–21G and 6–31G ∗ basis sets have been applied to identify the stationary points on the potential energy surface. The correlation effects have been included by using the MP2/6–31G ∗ method, as well as by means of MP3/6–31G ∗ // MP2/6–31G ∗ and MP4/6–31G ∗ //MP2/6–31G ∗ single point calculations. The geometry, harmonic vibrational frequencies, transition vector and electronic structure of the transition structures h…
