Real-life assessment of chronic rhinosinusitis patients using mobile technology: the mySinusitisCoach project by EUFOREA

2020

Abstract Background Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a chronic inflammatory disease associated with a substantial personal and socioeconomic burden. Monitoring of patient‐reported outcomes by mobile technology offers the possibility to better understand real‐life burden of CRS. Methods This study reports on the cross‐sectional evaluation of data of 626 users of mySinusitisCoach (mSC), a mobile application for CRS patients. Patient characteristics of mSC users were analysed as well as the level of disease control based on VAS global rhinosinusitis symptom score and adapted EPOS criteria. Results The mSC cohort represents a heterogeneous group of CRS patients with a diverse pattern of major sy…

2005

Introduction: The significance of the association between allergic rhinitis and abnormal airway responsiveness is unclear. For this reason, we have studied, in patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis, non specific bronchial hyperreactivity, total serum IgE and blood eosinophils, with reference to the responsible allergen, during and out of the pollen season. Materials and methods: Fourty-nine, non-smoking patients, living in Palermo, with clinical diagnosis of allergic rhinitis, skin prick tests and specific serum IgE mono-sensitive to pollen allergens, were enrolled in the study. Twenty patients suffered from seasonal rhinitis to Parietaria pollen, 15 patients to Graminacee pollen and 14 …

Th17 immunity in children with allergic asthma and rhinitis: a pharmacological approach

2013

Th17 cells and IL-17A play a role in the development and progression of allergic diseases. We analyzed the IL-17A levels in sputum supernatants (Ss), nasal wash (NW) and plasma (P) from Healthy Controls (HC) and children with Asthma/Rhinitis. We tested the expression of IL-17A, RORγ(t) and FOXP3 in peripheral blood T-lymphocytes from intermittent and mild-moderate asthma. The effect of Budesonide and Formoterol was tested "in vitro" on IL-17A, RORγ(t) and FOXP3 expression in cultured T-lymphocytes from mild-moderate asthma/persistent rhinitis patients, and on nasal and bronchial epithelial cells stimulated with NW and Ss from mild-moderate asthma/persistent rhinitis. Further, the effect of …

Enhanced production of CCL18 by tolerogenic dendritic cells is associated with inhibition of allergic airway reactivity

2012

Background IL-10–treated dendritic cells (DCs) have been shown to inhibit T-cell responses through induction of anergy and regulatory T cells in various model systems, including allergic inflammation, but the factors being involved in this inhibition are still unclear. Objective This study set out to analyze such factors produced or induced by IL-10–treated DCs by using gene expression profiling and to explore their function. Methods CD4 + T cells from allergic donors were stimulated with autologous monocyte-derived allergen-pulsed mature DCs or IL-10–treated DCs. After 24 hours, the transcriptional profile was analyzed by using Affymetrix technology. Results were validated by using quantit…

Induction of regulatory T cells by leflunomide in a murine model of contact allergen sensitivity.

2006

Allergic contact dermatitis and contact hypersensitivity (CHS) are characterized by allergen-specific activation of CD8 + and CD4 + T cells and the production of cytokines resulting in an inflammatory response and tissue damage. We show here that the immunosuppressive compound leflunomide ( N -[4-trifluoro-methylphenyl]-5-methylisoxazol-4 carboxamide, HWA 486) (LF) inhibited the contact allergic response induced in mice by epicutaneous application of the haptens dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB) and oxazolone. The extent of ear swelling remained significantly reduced following repeated challenge with DNFB for up to 18 weeks. LF and DNFB had to be applied simultaneously for inhibition to occur. Th…

Allergic contact dermatitis: understanding the immune response and potential for targeted therapy using cytokines.

1997

Allergic contact dermatitis is the most common job-related disease of the western world. The only available treatments are avoidance of contact with the allergen and the use of potent corticosteroids. Recently, the role of cytokines in the pathogenesis of this disease has been studied and, besides defining the key molecules and basic cellular immune responses responsible for disease development, these studies might help to develop new therapeutic strategies to target cytokines and thereby try to alter or abrogate ongoing immune reactions.
