Phase evolution by thermal treatment of equimolar cobalt–magnesium cordierite glass powders

2004

Abstract The structural evolution with annealing time at temperatures between 900 and 1100 °C of loosely compacted equimolar cobalt–magnesium cordierite glass powder was reported. The glass, with composition MgCoAl4Si5O18, was prepared by melting a glass precursor, previously synthesized by a semiwet method, at 1650 °C. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) of isothermally heated glasses at 900 and 950 °C revealed increased phase separation with thermal treatment. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results of these powders indicated that the first crystalline phase formed was μ cobalt-containing cordierite which transformed to α cordierite with longer annealing. At the beginning of the μ…

Enhanced thermoelectric properties of lightly Nb doped SrTiO3 thin films

2021

Novel thermoelectric materials developed for operation at room temperature must have similar or better performance along with being as ecofriendly as those commercially used, e.g., BiTe, in terms of their toxicity and cost. In this work, we present an in-depth study of the thermoelectric properties of epitaxial Nb-doped strontium titanate (SrTiNbO) thin films as a function of (i) doping concentration, (ii) film thickness and (iii) substrate type. The excellent crystal quality was confirmed by high resolution transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. The thermoelectric properties were measured by the three-omega method (thermal conductivity) and van der Pauw method (el…

High-pressure structural, lattice dynamics, and electronic properties of beryllium aluminate studied from first-principles theory

2021

Abstract The present work reports the complete study of structural, vibrational, mechanical, and electronic properties of BeAl2O4 (known as Chrysoberyl) using first-principles computing methods. The calculated ground-state properties agree quite well with previous experiments. The computed phonon dispersion curves do not show imaginary frequencies confirming the dynamical stability. In addition, the calculated elastic constants also ensure the mechanical stability through fulfillment of mechanical stability criteria. Apart from that, the theoretically determined phonon frequencies agree quite well with previous Raman and infrared experiments at ambient conditions. Various thermodynamic prop…

Hackmanite—The Natural Glow-in-the-Dark Material

2020

“Glow-in-the-dark” materials are known to practically everyone who has ever traveled by airplane or cruise ship, since they are commonly used for self-lit emergency exit signs. The green afterglow, persistent luminescence (PeL), is obtained from divalent europium doped to a synthetic strontium aluminate, but there are also some natural minerals capable of afterglow. One such mineral is hackmanite, the afterglow of which has never been thoroughly investigated, even if its synthetic versions can compete with some of the best commercially available synthetic PeL materials. Here we combine experimental and computational data to show that the white PeL of natural hackmanite is generated and cont…

Optical properties of Cr3+ and Ni2+ ions in MgO, LiNbO3 and LMA

1995

Abstract The electronic structures of Co2+ and Ni2+ ions are obtained by the molecular orbital LCGTO-LSD method. Electrostatic matrix calculations are performed for d3 and d8 configurations. Theoretical optical data are discussed in function of the impurity site location in the crystal cell.

Influence of superplasticizers structure on the hydration, the initial surface creation and the fluidity of cement model systems

2014

Nowadays the use of superplasticizers admixtures becomes unavoidable for concrete. It allows enhancing the rheological properties at the fresh state: the initial flow and slump retention during the 2-3 first hours of the life of a concrete. The understanding of this mechanism is still partly elucidated for PCE (grafted copolymers). The aim of this thesis was to challenge the assumption of the evolution of the adsorbed amount of PCE per instantaneous mineral surface unit as origin of the fluidity temporal evolution during the workability period. On an inert system (calcite), we confirmed that the fluidity is mainly governed by the adsorption level. Thus for a same surface adsorption density, …

Mechanism of Anionic Polymerization of (Meth)acrylates in the Presence of Aluminium Alkyls IV. Formation of a Co-ordinative Polymer Network via the L…

1996

The polymerization of methyl methacrylate in the presence of aluminium alkyls in toluene deviates from conventional kinetics. This results predominantly from the formation and precipitation of a co-ordinative polymer gel or network. Due to the lower reactivity and accessibility of the living chains in the gel, they are regarded as ’dormant’ and thus the concentration of active species decreases during polymerization. The network formation occurs via co-ordination of the living aluminate chain end group with in-chain ester carbonyl groups. Part of the chains are deactivated by a termination process but they are free of cyclic β-ketoesters which would result from the common ’back-biting’ reac…
