Allium istanbulense, a new autumnal species of A. sect. Codonoprasum (Amaryllidaceae) from Turkey and its taxonomic position among allied species

Allium istanbulense, a new species of Allium sect. Codonoprasum, is described and illustrated from Istanbul surroundings (European Turkey). It is a late-flowering diploid species (2n = 16), occurring in the undergrowth of oak or pine woods mainly on sandy or incoherent soils. Its morphology, karyology, leaf anatomy, seed micromorphology, ecology, conservation status and taxonomic relationships are examined. A taxonomic comparison with the most allied late flowering species of sect. Codonoprasum and identification keys of the group are also provided.

A citotaxonomic study on two Sicilian populations of Sternbergia colchiciflora from Madonie and Mt. Etna was carried out. They show marked differences in their morphology and caryology.This suggests to treat them as two distinct taxa, but their correct taxonomic position needs further investigation on other populations of Sternbergia colchiciflora from Mediterranean area

P. maritimum L., belonging to the Amaryllidaceae family, is a species that grows on beaches and coastal sand dunes mainly on both sides of the Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea, the Middle East, and up to the Caucasus region. In a previous paper we have shown that the alkaloid lycorine inhibits growth of rho+, mit- and rho-, strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, whereas strains devoid of mitochondrial DNA (rho degrees) are resistant to more than 200 micrograms/ml of the alkaloid. In this report we show that hypersuppressive petites are almost as resistant as rho degrees mutants, whereas isogenic rho- petites, which have retained longer segments of the genome, are sensitive to the drug.
Genetic variability in the endemic Leucojum valentinum

The genetic variability of Leucojum valentinum Pau (Amaryllidaceae), a vulnerable endemic species restricted to a small area in the region of Valencia (Eastern Spain), has been studied using random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. A total of 197 individuals from eleven populations were studied using 13 RAPD primers. Our results show high variability for the species, low differentiation among populations and uncorrelated levels of genetic variability and population size. Four groups in which three populations (SAG, PUG and COL) are separated from all the others were found, but without connection to geographical location.

A new species, Alliumalbanicum, is described and illustrated from Albania (Balkan Peninsula). It grows on serpentines or limestone in open rocky stands with a scattered distribution, mainly in mountain locations. Previously, the populations of this geophyte were attributed to A.meteoricum Heldr. & Hausskn. ex Halácsy, described from a few localities of North and Central Greece. These two species indeed show close relationships, chiefly regarding some features of the spathe valves, inflorescence and floral parts. Abstract The present study aimed at verifying the morphological variation in leaf traits among different populations of Pancratium maritimum (sea daffodil) and the correlation between leaf diversity and climate conditions at different sites. Eleven populations of P. maritimum from Mediterranean coastal sand dunes were investigated with respect to leaf surface micro-morphology, leaf anatomy, and vascular pattern.
