The Role of Early Textual Production in the Development of a Canon of Italian American Literature
2011
Having missed out on many of the developments spurred by the ethnic revival of the 1960s, Italian American literary studies only began in the late 1980s and did not take off as a movement until the late 1990s. However, the predominant focus of this work has been on authors of the 1930s and 1940s such as John Fante, Pietro Di Donato, Jerre Mangione and those who came after, almost completely leaving out the vast literary output in Italian from the 1880s to the 1920s. Especially important, in my view, is the fiction which was serialized in newspapers and other periodicals of the day which not only illuminates the early experiences of immigrants in America and the specific dynamics at work wit…

Kara reprezentācijas Čanga-reja Lī romānā „Pakļautais”
2017
This paper analyzes Rodrigo Rosa’s novel El material humano (2009), especially its representation of violence as seen through …
Outline of a sociology of translation informed by the ideas of Pierre Bourdieu
2010
In this article I put forward a sociology of translation informed by the ideas of Pierre Bourdieu. Founded on a theory of action, this theory may be defined as a theory of translation practice. Translation practice is examined here through the study of the translation of symbolic goods, specifically American literature into French. The notions of ‘field’, ‘habitus’ and ‘illusio’ are briefly analysed and applied to American literature in French. The habitus of Marcel Duhamel and Maurice-Edgar Coindreau are examined, as well as the illusio specific to the science-fiction field. Bourdieusian sociology serves as a foundation for raising questions that are often discussed in translation studies …
Literature of the Americas in the making: U.S. writers and translation in Sur, 1931-1944
2013
This essay engages history of translation by examining one of its most important contributors: Sur, a literary journal that Victoria Ocampo ran for 45 years and 340 issues. The most celebrated Latin American writers of the 1960s ‘Boom’ unanimously recognized that their key literary influences were those that they had first read in translation in Sur. Specifically, the essay focuses on the translations of North American literature in Sur’s early years: E. Hemingway, M. Twain, L. Hughes, K. A. Porter, E. A. Poe, H. Melville, e. e. cummings, W. Whitman, H. James, and most prominently, W. Faulkner, are translated by J. L. Borges, E. Pezzoni, J. Bianco, R. Baeza, BioyCasares, and M. Acosta. Whil…
