Effect of pH on biological phosphorus uptake.

An anaerobic aerobic laboratory scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) was operated to study the effect of pH on enhanced biological phosphorus removal. Seven steady states were achieved under different operating conditions. In all of them, a slight variation in the pH value was observed during anaerobic phase. However, pH rose significantly during aerobic phase. The increase observed was due to phosphorus uptake and carbon dioxide stripping. When pH was higher than 8.2-8.25 the phosphorus uptake rate clearly decreased. Effect of macro and micro nutrients addition during anaerobic mono-digestion of grass silage in leach-bed reactors

The effect of macro- (NH4Cl) (set I) and micro-nutrients (Fe, Ni, Co and Mo) (set II) addition on chemical oxygen demand (COD) solubilisation during anaerobic mono-digestion of grass silage was investigated in two sets of leach bed reactor experiments at 35°C. Results showed that addition of NH4Cl and micro-nutrients improved COD solubilisation by 18% (0.56 g SCOD g−1 volatile solids) and 7% (0.45 g SCOD g−1 VS), respectively than control. About 20–50% of the added micro-nutrients were bioavailable in the produced leachates, while the rest (50–80%) were adsorbed onto the grass silage. Mechanisms of endothelial cell swelling from lactacidosis studied in vitro

One of the early sequelae of ischemia is an increase of circulating lactic acid that occurs in response to anaerobic metabolism. The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether lactic acidosis can induce endothelial swelling in vitro under closely controlled extracellular conditions. Cell volume of suspended cultured bovine aortic endothelial cells was measured by use of an advanced Coulter technique employing the “pulse area analysis” signal-processing technique (CASY1). The isosmotic reduction of pH from 7.4 to 6.8 had no effect on cell volume. Lowering of pH to 6.6, 6.4, or 6.0, however, led to significant, pH-dependent increases of cell volume. Background Hyperthyroid patients often suffer from impaired exercise capacity with dyspnoea. Two well established, non-invasive methods were used to evaluate the influence of hyperthyroidism on cardiopulmonary function. Patients and methods In 42 patients with hyperthyroidism we performed spirometry and cardiopulmonary exercise testing before and after 7 days of propranolol therapy as well as in euthyroidism. Results In hyperthyroidism reduced vital capacity and 1-second capacity were observed (95.5 +/- 2.4% vs 102.6 +/- 1.5%; p = 0.0087; 89.4 +/- 2.3% vs 95.2 +/- 2.2%; p = 0.0179). Kinetics of green asparagus ascorbic acid heated in a high-temperature thermoresistometer

Thermal degradation of green asparagus ascorbic acid in high-temperature short-time conditions was studied by heating in a five-channel computer-controlled thermoresistometer. Ascorbic acid was heated to between 110  °C and 140  °C and the degradation kinetics were analyzed assuming that two different inactivation mechanisms were occurring, one aerobic and the other anaerobic. The two reactions followed first-order kinetics, with E a=12.3(2.0) kcal/mol and k 125  °C=47.0(3.0)×10–3 s–1 for the aerobic oxidation, and E a=6.1(1.4) kcal/mol and k 125  °C=4.1(0.2)×10–3 s–1 for the anaerobic degradation.

Characterisation and Anaerobic Batch Degradation of Materials Accumulating in Anaerobic Digesters Treating Poultry Slaughterhouse Waste

We characterised materials accumulating in two failed mesophilic semi-continuous anaerobic digesters treating poultry slaughterhouse waste and, for reference, materials in the two well-performing digesters, to find the anaerobic degradability of these materials and the factors affecting their degradation. We also studied materials accumulating and stratifying in various layers in one of the two well-performing digesters. Sulphate-Reducing Laboratory-Scale High-Rate Anaerobic Reactors for Treatment of Metal- and Sulphate-Containing Mine Wastewater

Upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors were used in this study to evaluate the feasibility of the sulphate-reducing, anaerobic high-rate process to treat metal- and sulphate-containing mining wastewater (MWW). Four simultaneous reactors, inoculated with different inocula (mesophilic granular sludge from two UASB reactors, one treating sugar refinery wastewater and the other board mill wastewater) and operated with different loadings, were for 95 days fed with synthetic feed consisting of glucose and sulphate. Oenococcus oeni (formerly Leuconostoc oenos) can perform malolactic fermentation, converting L-malate to L-lactate and carbon dioxide, in wines. The energy and redox potential required to support the growth of the micro-organism are supplied mainly by the consumption of carbohydrates via the heterolactic pathway.
