Universal Transients in Polymer and Ionic Transition Metal Complex Light-Emitting Electrochemical Cells

Two types of light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) are commonly distinguished, the polymer-based LEC (p-LEC) and the ionic transition metal complex-based LEC (iTMC-LEC). Apart from marked differences in the active layer constituents, these LEC types typically show operational time scales that can differ by many orders of magnitude at room temperature. Here, we demonstrate that despite these differences p-LECs and iTMC-LECs show current, light output, and efficacy transients that follow a universal shape. The aims of this study are to characterize humic acids (HAs) from raised bog peat, to evaluate the homogeneity of peat HAs within peat profiles, and to study peat humification impact on properties of HAs. Capillary electroendoosmotic chromatography of peptides

This review focuses on the current state of peptide separation by capillary electroendoosmotic chromatography (CEC). When carried out under optimised conditions, peptide separation by CEC methods represents an orthogonal and complementary technique to micro-HPLC (micro-HPLC) and high-performance capillary zone electrophoresis (HPCZE). The origin of the selectivity differences that can be achieved with these three separation techniques (CEC, micro-HPLC and HPCZE), respectively are discussed, and the current limits of performance with CEC methods documented. Super-high-speed liquid chromatography of proteins and peptides on non-porous Micra NPS-RP packings

Abstract The new generation of non-porous silica RP packings commercially available from Micra Scientific was tested for separations of peptides and proteins by means of the gradient HPLC. Extremely high-speed separations were achieved using conventional chromatographic equipment: six proteins could be completely separated within six seconds. Tryptic digest peptides could be resolved in more then 40 components within 2–3 min. The effect of the experimental parameters such as temperature, flow rate etc. was investigated.

Electrical conductivity and permittivity of water-AOT-n-heptane microemulsions

Measurements of the electrical conductivity and of the complex permittivity of water-sodium bis(2-ethylhexyl) sulfosuccinate (AOT)-n-heptane microemulsions are reported. The experimental results are rationalized in terms of a hopping mechanism of AOT anions within clusters of reversed micelles. The dependence of the hopping rate and of the cluster dimensions upon the ratio [water]/[AOT] and temperature is discussed.

Freely-Suspended and Transferred Freely-Suspended Films of Polymeric Liquid Crystals

Freely-suspended (FS) liquid-crystal (LC) films of a polymethylsiloxane homo- and a copolymer with different mesogenic side groups have been prepared and investigated. For both substances the preparation of the films succeeded only in the isotropic phase but the higher ordered phases were reached after cooling. The films of the homopolymer have only been obtained with thicknesses estimated to be in the pm-range and with an unusual “Book-Shelf” orientation of the smectic layers. Phases and phase transitions of (NaCl)1?x(NaCN)x

(NaCl)1−x(NaCN)x mixed crystals with CN-concentrationsx of 0.87, 0.76, 0.71 and 0.65 have been investigated by X-ray powder diffraction. Apart from the cubic room temperature phase, a rhombohedral and an orthorhombic phase have been identified. In addition a glass state has been observed which is characterized by a strong broadening of the cubic powder lines. The phase diagram shows a wide coexistence gap between the non-cubic phases and the glass state.

Phases and phase transitions in the mixed molecular system (NaCN)1x(KCN)x

The phase diagram of (NaCN)1−x(KCN)x was examined by neutron powder diffraction in the temperature range 5K ≦T≦300 K. Several non-cubic low-temperature phases were identified for concentrationsx<xc1=0.15 andx≧xc2=0.89. Lattice parameters and ferroelastic deformations were determined from the observed powder patterns. The phase transformations were characterized following the temperature dependence of the appropriate order parameters.

Detection of phase transitions in thin films with a quartz crystal microbalance

Abstract The quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) is used to determine the phase transition point of thin films by measuring the change in frequency as a function of temperature. To elucidate this relationship, two types of polymers were studied where the bulk phase transitions were known. We investigated a casted thin film of an amphiphilic polyoxazoline and a Langmuir-Blodgett film comprised of fifteen double layers of an amphotropic polyacrylate. The phase transition points of the thin films could be detected by the QCM which were in the same range as for the bulk materials.
