Maternal nutrition and fetal growth: the role of iron status and intake during pregnancy

2012

Correspondence: Clara L RodriguezBernal Centro Superior de Investigacion en Salud Publica, Avenida Cataluna 21, Valencia 46020, Spain Tel +34 961 925 909 Fax +34 961 925 703 Email rodriguez_claber@gva.es Abstract: Fetal growth restriction is an important predictor of infant mortality and morbidity. Maternal iron status and iron supplementation during pregnancy have been related to fetal growth with contrasting results. Therefore, indication of iron supplementation, doses, and timing is still controversial. Current literature was reviewed in PubMed/MEDLINE using the following terms: “iron” or “iron deficiency” or “anemia” or “iron intake” or “iron supplementation” and “pregnancy” or “materna…

HSP70, the Key to Account for Erythroid Tropism of Diamond-Blackfan Anemia?

2015

Abstract Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA) was the first ribosomopathy identified and is characterized by a moderate to severe, usually macrocytic aregenerative anemia associated with congenital malformations in 50% of the DBA cases. This congenital rare erythroblastopenia is due to a blockade in erythroid differentiation between the BFU-e and CFU-e stages. The link between a haploinsufficiency in a ribosomal protein (RP) gene that now encompass 15 different RP genes and the erythroid defect is still to be fully defined. Recently, mutations in TSR2 and GATA1 genes have been identified in a few DBA families. The GATA1 gene encodes for the major transcription factor critical for erythropoiesis an…

Parasitismo Intestinal en Población Infantil de las Regiones Atlánticas de Nicaragua

2018

Anemia prevalence in women of reproductive age in low- and middle-income countries between 2000 and 2018

2021

Anemia is a globally widespread condition in women and is associated with reduced economic productivity and increased mortality worldwide. Here we map annual 2000–2018 geospatial estimates of anemia prevalence in women of reproductive age (15–49 years) across 82 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), stratify anemia by severity and aggregate results to policy-relevant administrative and national levels. Additionally, we provide subnational disparity analyses to provide a comprehensive overview of anemia prevalence inequalities within these countries and predict progress toward the World Health Organization’s Global Nutrition Target (WHO GNT) to reduce anemia by half by 2030. Our results …

Transient Pulmonary Infiltrates during Treatment with Anti-Thymocyte Globulin

1999

We report the case of a 54-year-old woman with aplastic anemia, who developed transient pulmonary infiltrates following intravenous infusion of rabbit antithymocyte globulin (ATG) for 3 days. There was no other explanation than the infusion of ATG for the infiltrates. Rechallenge with ATG induced the recurrence of opacities on the chest radiograph. Although rarely involved with only 4 previous reports, ATG should be included in the list of drugs capable of inducing pulmonary infiltrates.

Chronic Renal Failure

2010

Background To the best of our knowledge, the association between COPD and chronic renal failure (CRF) has never been assessed. Lean mass is frequently reduced in COPD, and the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) might be depressed in spite of normal serum creatinine (concealed CRF). We investigated the prevalence and correlates of both concealed and overt CRF in elderly patients with COPD. Methods We evaluated 356 consecutive elderly outpatients with COPD enrolled in the Extrapulmonary Consequences of COPD in the Elderly Study and 290 age-matched outpatients free from COPD. The GFR was estimated using the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease Study Group equation. Patients were categorized as …

An Original Risk Score to Predict Early Major Bleeding in Acute Pulmonary Embolism

2021

Background Improved prediction of the risk of early major bleeding in pulmonary embolism (PE) is needed to optimize acute management. Research Question Does a simple scoring system predict early major bleeding in acute PE patients, identifying patients with either high or low probability of early major bleeding? Study Design and Methods From a multicenter prospective registry including 2,754 patients, we performed post hoc multivariable logistic regression analysis to build a risk score to predict early (up to hospital discharge) major bleeding events. We validated the endpoint model internally, using bootstrapping in the derivation dataset by sampling with replacement for 500 iterations. P…

Evaluation of the Physicochemical Properties of the Iron Nanoparticle Drug Products: Brand and Generic Sodium Ferric Gluconate

2021

Complex iron nanoparticle-based drugs are one of the oldest and most frequently administered classes of nanomedicines. In the US, there are seven FDA-approved iron nanoparticle reference drug products, of which one also has an approved generic drug product (i.e., sodium ferric gluconate (SFG)). These products are indicated for the treatment of iron deficiency anemia and are administered intravenously. On the molecular level, iron nanomedicines are colloids composed of an iron oxide core with a carbohydrate coating. This formulation makes nanomedicines more complex than conventional small molecule drugs. As such, these products are often referred to as nonbiological complex drugs (e.g., by t…

Recombinant human erythropoietin increases the radiosensitivity of xenografted human tumours in anaemic nude mice

2001

Purpose: The effect of recombinant human erythropoietin (Epo) on the radiosensitivity of human tumour xenografts growing in anaemic nude mice was studied. Methods and materials: Anaemia was induced by total body irradiation (TBI) of mice prior to tumour transplantation. The development of anaemia was prevented by Epo (1000 U/kg s.c.) given 3 times weekly starting 2 weeks prior to TBI (5 Gy). Epo treatment did not influence the growth rate of the tumours, which were transplanted into the subcutis of the hind leg of mice. Thirteen days after TBI (tumour volume of approx. 40 mm3), a single-dose irradiation (12 Gy) of the tumour was performed resulting in a growth delay with subsequent regrowth…

Hematologic toxicity of radium-223 in elderly patients with metastatic Castration Resistant Prostate Cancer: a real-life experience

2019

Background: Treatment with radium-223 has been shown to increase survival and to delay skeletal events related to bone metastases of patients with metastatic Castration Resistant Prostate Cancer (mCRPC). This treatment has also proved to be well tolerated, and hematological toxicity, in particular anemia, represents the most represented adverse event. Materials and methods: We evaluated the hematologic toxicity of Ra-223 treatment in a real-life experience of 38 patients from two Italian cancer centers, with bone metastases from mCRPC. The main endpoint of the study was the evaluation of the efficacy and tolerability of treatment with radium-223, with greater reference to hematological toxi…
