Cytoglobin (Cygb) is a vertebrate globin with so far poorly defined function. It is expressed in the fibroblast cell-lineage but has also been found in neurons. Here we provide, using immunohistochemistry, a detailed study on the distribution of Cygb in the mouse brain. While Cygb is a cytoplasmic protein in active cells of the supportive tissue, in neurons it is located in the cytoplasm and the nucleus. We found the expression of Cygb in all brain regions, although only a fraction of the neurons was Cygb-positive. Signals were of different intensity ranging from faint to very intense. Bursts of beta frequency band activity in the basal ganglia of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) are associated with impaired motor performance. Here we test in human adults whether small variations in the timing of movement relative to beta bursts have a critical effect on movement velocity and whether the cumulative effects of multiple beta bursts, both locally and across networks, matter.
Effect of claustrum stimulation on neurons of the contralateral medial oculomotor area, in the cat

In chloralose-anaesthetized cats, the extracellular spontaneous unitary activity was recorded from 157 neurons, located in the medial oculomotor area. 98 units were identified as projecting onto the superior colliculus. Electrical stimulations of the contralateral claustrum provoked, on 13 of these cells, an excitatory effect, lasting 10-35 ms and appearing with a latency of 20-50 ms. Full length section of the corpus callosum totally abolished the contralateral claustrum effect. The results suggest that in the cat, the claustrum may have a role in the bilateral control of the visuo-motor performance.

Objectives Prion diseases are dementing illnesses with poorly defined neuropsychological features. This is probably because the most common form, sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, is often rapidly progressive with pervasive cognitive decline making detailed neuropsychological investigation difficult. We have used a retrograde labeling technique to identify motorneurons for each of the 30 body wall muscles of an abdominal hemisegment in the late stage 16Drosophilaembryo. Each motorneuron has a characteristic cell body position, dendritic arborization, and axonal projection. In addition, we have determined the neuroblasts of origin for most of the motorneurons we describe. In contrast to other sensory modalities, pain does not decrease when a noxious stimulus is applied at constant intensity (Greene & Hardy, 1962). Extrapyramidal motoric symptoms are casual side effects under antipsychotic medication. New generation antipsychotics are expected to have a reduced risk due to different receptor affinities. Here, haloperidol and the new generation antipsychotics, risperidone, amisulpride, and aripiprazole, were examined with both catalepsy test and rotarod performance test to screen for their usability in mice. Mice treated with haloperidol, risperidone, and aripiprazole showed dose and time-dependent impairment. Amisulpride-treated mice showed no signs of catalepsy. Autoradiographic techniques were used to study the distribution of histamine H2-receptors as labeled with [125I]iodoaminopotentidine in the brains of patients affected by human neurodegenerative pathologies, as compared with control cases. The highest levels of histamine H2 binding sites in control cases were found in the caudate, putamen, and accumbens nuclei. In Huntington's chorea, the levels of histamine H2 receptor binding sites were found to be markedly decreased in virtually all regions examined, particularly in the putamen and globus pallidus lateralis. Heat transduction mechanisms in primary nociceptive afferents have been suggested to involve a vanilloid receptor channel with high calcium permeability. To characterize the changes in free cytosolic calcium evoked by noxious heat stimuli (< or =51 degrees C, 10s), we performed microfluorometric measurements in acutely dissociated small dorsal root ganglion neurons (< or =32.5 microm) of adult rats using the dye FURA-2. Only neurons that responded with a reversible increase in intracellular calcium to high potassium were evaluated.
