A CORPUS-BASED APPROACH TO ANGLICISMS IN THE ROMANIAN ECONOMIC PRESS

2011

The paper conducts a quantitative analysis into the phenomenon of English borrowing in Romanian, as reflected in one of the leading economic publications over a period of one year (Capital 2005). Starting from a definition of Anglicisms that is based mainly on formal criteria, borrowed words in the above newspaper are identified and classified according to frequency of occurrence, both in relative and in absolute terms. Thus, Anglicism types and tokens are quantified as regards the proportion they hold in the total number of words in the publication, and in terms of their repetition rate. Special attention is devoted to borrowed words in the lowest and highest frequency ranges, with some of…

Anglicisms and Italian Equivalents in the Era of Covid-19: A Corpus-Based Study of Lockdown

2020

The whole globe has been going through an unprecedented historical moment since World War II. COVID-19, the disease against which we have all been trying to defend ourselves for several months now, has spread worldwide with a significant impact in all spheres of life. With the pandemic outburst and English the language of globalization, several Anglicisms have entered the lexicon of other languages, especially Italian, traditionally open to foreign words. COVID-19-related Anglicisms are used in Italian to such an extent that we can reasonably refer to them as the ‘language of pandemic’. The English words and expressions employed in Italian to refer to the current disease are numerous. Some …

Makes sense, Maken järki : a case study of using English while playing

2015

2016

Dear Editor: According to the Dictionary of the Spanish Language of the Royal Spanish Academy (DLERAE) (1) anglicism refers to those words or terms of English language that are used in another. The Spanish language has acquired and uses numerous anglicisms, especially for words that have no option to be translated into Spanish, such as those absent in this language like internet, wifi, whisky, etc. In Medicine a lot of anglicisms are inevitably used today in the medical language, such as: stress, test, distress, gold standard, score, shunt, level, etc. Dentistry also commonly uses many anglicisms, such as forceps, bonding, inlays, composite, etc. that would be justified in most cases due to…

Les anglicismes en français et en tcheque contemporains : le cas des formes en-ing

2020

The aim of this study is to analyze the neological borrowings from English that occur in contemporary French and Czech. Special emphasis is placed on neological borrowings with the -ing suffix. Owing to the status of Anglo-American as a lingua franca, Anglicisms affect all languages. This study investigates more specifically the processes involved in these -ing constructions. After a quantitative analysis of the respective diffusion and productivity in both languages, we focus on a few specific words (phishing, géocaching, sharing, washing), attested in both languages, and compare their integration from several perspectives (phonological, orthographical, morphological, semantic and local va…

Anglicismu lietošana franču reklāmas jomā

2015
