Determination of fatty alcohol ethoxylates with diphenic anhydride derivatization and liquid chromatography with spectrophotometric detection

2009

A method for the determination of fatty alcohol ethoxylates (FAEs) using diphenic anhydride as derivatization reagent and RP-HPLC separation with UV-vis detection is presented and compared to derivatization with maleic, phthalic, and other cyclic anhydrides. With these anhydrides, the reaction rates increased when urea was added to the reaction medium, and the yields did not decrease when the samples contained moderate amounts of water. Gradient elution on a C8 column was performed with water/acetonitrile in the presence of 0.1% acetic acid. The use of diphenic anhydride was advantageous for both the chromatographic separation and the detection. Specifically, sensitivity at 200 and 220 nm w…

An insight into the interaction between functionalized thermoplastic elastomer and layered double hydroxides through rheological investigations

2018

Abstract Nanocomposites based on maleated poly(styrene-(ethylene-co-butylene)-styrene) copolymer (SEBSgMA) and organo-modified layered double hydroxide (OLDH) have been formulated with the aim to investigate the effects of interfacial interactions between the grafted maleic anhydride groups of the copolymer and the OLDH nanolayers on the rheological properties of nanocomposites. The spectroscopic analysis indicates the establishment of specific polymer/nanofiller interactions, whose extent has been highlighted through morphological and rheological investigations. Specifically, oscillatory melt rheology and shear relaxation tests have been considered in order to deeply investigate the interf…

Durability of Basalt/Hemp Hybrid Thermoplastic Composites

2019

The Achilles heel of thermoplastic natural fibre composites is their limited durability. The environmental degradation of the mechanical properties of hemp and hemp/basalt hybrid-reinforced high-density polyethylene (HDPE) composites has been investigated with a special focus on the effects of water ageing and accelerated ageing, including hygrothermal and UV radiation. Modification of the matrix was carried out using a maleic anhydride high-density polyethylene copolymer (MAPE) as a compatibilizer. Hybridization of hemp fibres with basalt fibres and the incorporation of MAPE were found to significantly decrease the water uptake (up to 75%) and increase the retention of mechanical propertie…

Synthesis of Polymer Colloids Using Polymerizable Surfactants

2001

A series of new anionic surfactants were prepared by reacting a polymerizable alcohol with either maleic or succinic anhydride, as well as sulfosuccinic anhydride, resulting in either bireactive or monoreactive surfactants, either carboxylated or sulfonated. The synthesis presented and the critical micelle concentration (CMC) determined. These compounds were engaged in the emulsion polymerization of styrene in batch and also in semi-batch seeded copolymerization producing core-shell latexes. The core was a polystyrene seed prepared using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), thoroughly purified through ion exchange resins. The seed was then swollen overnight with a small amount of a 1 : 1 mixture o…

Polypept(o)ides: Hybrid Systems Based on Polypeptides and Polypeptoids.

2015

Polypept(o)ides combine the multifunctionality and intrinsic stimuli-responsiveness of synthetic polypeptides with the "stealth"-like properties of the polypeptoid polysarcosine (poly(N-methyl glycine)). This class of block copolymers can be synthesized by sequential ring opening polymerization of α-amino acid N-carboxy-anhydrides (NCAs) and correspondingly of the N-substituted glycine N-carboxyanhydride (NNCA). The resulting block copolymers are characterized by Poisson-like molecular weight distributions, full end group integrity, and dispersities below 1.2. While polysarcosine may be able to tackle the currently arising issues regarding the gold standard PEG, including storage diseases i…

Pulsatile protein release and protection using radiation-crosslinked polypeptide hydrogel delivery devices

2011

Abstract In the recent years recombinant technology has identified numerous protein based therapeutics. Their effective delivery, though, can be challenging due to the poor stability of most proteins along their pathway to the target site in the body. Hydrogels have been identified as good candidates for protein encapsulation and delivery thanks to both material and manufacturing process advantages. In this work we propose high energy irradiation as a synthetic methodology of choice to engineer hydrogel-based delivery devices for encapsulation and pulsatile release of proteins, triggered by pH, and for prevention of their denaturation when encapsulated. In particular, maleic anhydride funct…

Synthesis and characterization of amphiphilic comb-polymers via ring-opening metathesis polymerization of exo,exo-5,6-bis(alkoxymethyl)-7-oxabicyclo[…

1994

A number of exo,exo-5,6-bis(alkoxymethyl)-7-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]hept-2-enes (exo,exo-5,6-bis(alkoxymethyl)-7-oxanorbornenes) with long alkyl chains were prepared by reduction of the Diels-Alder adduct of furan and maleic anhydride, followed by alkylation with a series of different n-alkylbromides. These monomers were polymerized via ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) catalyzed by ruthenium trichloride in ethanolic solution. Contrary to a helical conformation as it was predicted by a previous molecular model study the poly(7-oxanorbornenes) adopt a coil conformation in solution. In bulk the materials show side chain crystallization.

CONTROLLED RELEASE OF IgG BY NOVEL UV INDUCED POLYSACCHARIDE/POLY(AMINO ACID)HYDROGELS

2009

The development of new protein and peptide drugs needs new delivery systems able to entrap such drugs in safe conditions without affecting their structure and biological activity. In this context, the present work reports a new approach to load IgG, used as a model of therapeutic proteins such as anti-TNF-alpha monoclonal antibodies, into a polymeric system able to release the entrapped IgG in a controlled manner. In particular, new polysaccharide/poly(amino acid) UV induced hydrogels are proposed as colon delivery systems for human IgG. The poly(amino acid), alpha,beta-poly[N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-D,L-aspartamide], has been functionalized with methacrylic anhydride, while the polysaccharide, in…

Polyphosphate: A Morphogenetically Active Implant Material Serving as Metabolic Fuel for Bone Regeneration

2015

The initial mineralization centers during human bone formation onto osteoblasts are composed of CaCO3 . Those bioseeds are enzymatically formed via carbonic anhydrase(s) in close association with the cell surface of the osteoblasts. Subsequently, the bicarbonate/carbonate anions are exchanged non-enzymatically by inorganic phosphate [Pi ]. One source for the supply of Pi is polyphosphate [polyP] which is a physiological polymer, formed in the osteoblasts as well as in the platelets. The energy-rich acid anhydride bonds within the polyP chain are cleaved by phosphatase(s); during this reaction free-energy might be released that could be re-used, as metabolic fuel, for the maintenance of the …

Preparation and mechanical properties of intercalated PP/OMMT nanocomposites

2007

The preparation of polymer nanocomposites by melt compounding polypropylene (PP) with organically modified montmorillonite using maleic anhydride modified PP as compatibilizer is described. Compositions with organomontmorillonite content 0, 5, 10 wt.% were prepared and tested. Data on the influence of organomontmorillonite content on the tensile stress?strain curves, elastic modulus, strength, and ultimate elongation of the nanocomposites are obtained. The concentration dependences of elastic properties of materials with differently oriented plate like nanoparticles analyses taking into account hierarchical structure features of nanocomposites is considered. Theoretical analysis results are…
