Disentangling conditional effects of multiple regime shifts on Atlantic cod productivity

2020

AbstractRegime shifts are increasingly prevalent in the ecological literature. However, definitions vary, and many detection methods are subjective. Here, we employ an operationally objective means of identifying regime shifts, using a Bayesian online change-point detection algorithm able to simultaneously identify shifts in the mean and(or) variance of time series data. We detected multiple regime shifts in long-term (59-154 years) patterns of coastal Norwegian Atlantic cod (>70% decline) and putative drivers of cod productivity: North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO); sea-surface temperature; zooplankton abundance; fishing mortality (F). The consequences of an environmental or climate-relate…

La cultura inglese e l’interesse per il patrimonio architettonico e paesaggistico in Sicilia, tra scoperte, evoluzione degli studi e divulgazione

2019

e will trace the evolution of an encounter between two cultures, the English and the SiSicilian culture, which, at a time of political and social change, discover the classical world and the Arab-Norman architecture. The enchanted charm of Sicily and its imposing and melancholic nature was crossed for two centuries by the exodus of an English world that will share the eternal romanticism of it throughout Europe, and is also represented by the exploit of publications requested and produced by the Anglo-Saxon world between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. John Ruskin arrived in Sicily in 1874 to discover the nature and the architecture of the island. A comparison with the English trav…

In vitro contamination of hair by marijuana smoke.

2004

Abstract Background: The deposition of cannabinoids on/into hair from environmental smoke can be considered as a potential source of drug findings in hair. We studied external uptake of cannabinoids from marijuana smoke, investigating possible influencing factors on drug uptake and the efficiency of decontamination procedures. Methods: Strands of a natural hair sample were moistened with water, greased with sebum or sebum/sweat, or bleached or permed. Treated and untreated samples were exposed to marijuana smoke for 60 min. Aliquots of each hair strand were either kept unwashed or were washed with methanol, dichloromethane, or 5 g/L dodecyl sulfate in water. Cannabinoid concentrations in un…

Cannabis Use and Social Anxiety in Adolescence: The Role of Facilitation Expectancies

2015

Cannabis use is frequently related to social anxiety in young adulthood, but the nature of this relationship is unclear. Moreover, much research has been conducted on the role of cannabis effects expectancies and their relationship to social anxiety among young adults, but less is known about adolescence. The study examined the relationship between social anxiety, cannabis use patterns, and cannabis effects expectancies among a nonclinical sample of 1,305 adolescents (51% female). Non-users reported higher social anxiety scores than non-problematic and risky users. Compared to users, non-users had more negative expectancies. Risky and problematic users showed higher social and sexual facili…

The mystery of the Polish soul. B. W. Johnson's effectà rebours

1996

Studies conducted in Poland replicated a not very-well known effect discovered by B. W. Johnson (1937). In his study students estimated their mood on several successive days each time comparing it to the mood they usually have. The results revealed a peculiar positive bias in that the students usually defined their mood as 'better than usual'. Johnson's study was replicated in Poland, where demonstration of optimism is not a cultural norm. The results suggest that Polish subjects 'usually define their mood as worse than usual'. The generalization and limitation of this negative bias is discussed in the light of the Pollyanna Principle and related empirical studies involving Polish subjects.
