The dielectric relaxation properties of a combined main-chain/side-chain liquid-crystalline polymer were investigated. It was found that the rotation of the side chain about the main chain (δ-process) is not as strongly restricted as in side-chain liquid-crystalline polymers. This is attributed to the facts that the side chain is attached to the flexible spacer within the chain backbone and that the concentration of the side chains is comparatively small. Two low-temperature relaxation processes were observed to occur in the glassy smectic and the crystalline state. They are attributed to intramolecular motions with in the mesogenic groups.
Variation of the optical absorption edge in AgGaS2 single crystals at high pressure

In this paper the optical absorption edge of AgGaS 2 is measured as a function of pressure up to 26 GPa in order to verify the effect of the three phases transitions occurring in that pressure domain. The direct energy gap increases linearly with pressure at the rate of about 4.0 x 10 -2 eV GPa -1 up to 10.2 GPa. The absence of any discontinuity in the energy gap in the pressure range of 4.2-10.2 GPa confirms that the volume change, in the chalcopirite to monoclinic second-order transition, if it exists, is very small. In an industry project with a German car manufacturer we are faced with the challenge of placing a maximum number of uniform rigid rectangular boxes in the interior of a car trunk. The problem is of practical importance due to a European industry norm which requires car manufacturers to state the trunk volume according to this measure. No really satisfactory automated solution for this problem has been known in the past. Doping and stability of monolayer low defect content graphene transferred on a silicon dioxide substrate on silicon are investigated by micro-Raman spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM) during thermal treatments in oxygen and vacuum controlled atmosphere. The exposure to molecular oxygen induces graphene changes as evidenced by a blue-shift of the G and 2D Raman bands, together with the decrease of I2D/IG intensity ratio, which are consistent with a high p-type doping (∼1013 cm-2) of graphene. Complex nonlinear optimization problems require specific resolution techniques. These problems are often characterized by a solution space that presents many local optima. In these cases, local search algorithms, as the classical descent neighborhood search method, have a heavy drawback: the optimization algorithm generally converges towards a local minimum. Phase and structural transformations in annealed copper coatings in relation to oxide whisker growth

Abstract We describe structural and phase transformation in copper coatings made of microparticles during heating and annealing in air in the temperature range up to 400 °C. Such thermal treatment is accompanied by intensive CuO nanowhisker growth on the coating surface and the formation of the layered oxide phases (Cu 2 O and CuO) in the coating interior. X-ray diffraction and focused ion beam (FIB) are employed to characterize the multilayer structure of annealed copper coatings. Formation of volumetric defects such as voids and cracks in the coating is demonstrated.
Reconstruction of random media using Monte Carlo methods.

A simulated annealing algorithm is applied to the reconstruction of two-dimensional porous media with prescribed correlation functions. The experimental correlation function of an isotropic sample of Fontainebleau sandstone and a synthetic correlation function with damped oscillations are used in the reconstructions. To reduce the numerical effort we follow a proposal suggesting the evaluation of the correlation functions only along certain directions. The results show that this simplification yields significantly different microstructures as compared to a full evaluation of the correlation function. A new functional representation of NMR-derived distance constraints, the flexible restraint potential, has been implemented in the program CONGEN (Bruccoleri RE, Karplus M, 1987, Biopolymers 26:137-168) for molecular structure generation. In addition, flat-bottomed restraint potentials for representing dihedral angle and vicinal scalar coupling constraints have been introduced into CONGEN. On-line Mössbauer measurements at low temperatures of 83mKr implanted into Al

Abstract A vacuum ion implantation chamber housing a helium flow cryostat and a Mossbauer transducer has been constructed and coupled directly to an ion separator for low temperature implantation and on-line Mossbauer measurements. 83m Kr, produced by thermal neutron activation of enriched 82 Kr gas, has been implanted into Al foils in the temperature range 15–300 K. Annealing effects and the temperature dependence of the Lamb-Mossbauer factor have been studied by Mossbauer measurements (at 15–35 K) using the implanted Al targets as sources and Kr/hydrochinone as absorber.
