Developing a procedure to optimize electroless deposition of thin palladium layer on anodic alumina membranes
2006
In recent years, the increased demand for hydrogen in many industrial applications, like petrochemical and semiconductor processing, and sustainable energy (fuel cells) has led to a renewed interest in methods for separation and purification of hydrogen from gas mixtures. In particular, palladium-based membranes have been the subject of many studies, due to their potential use as hydrogen-selective membranes for gas separation or purification [1,2]. Owing to the high cost of palladium and in order to increase the flow rate of hydrogen, composite membranes, formed by a thin layer of palladium deposited on a porous support, are largely preferred to thick self-standing metal membranes. Differe…
Nanostructured anode material for Li-ion batteries
2010
The present paper focuses on a nanostructured SnCo alloy electrochemically prepared by template method in view of its use as anode material alternative to graphite in lithium-ion batteries. The fabrication of SnCo nanowire arrays was carried out by potentiostatic co-deposition of the two metals by using nanostructured anodic alumina membranes as template. Electrochemical tests on lithiation-delithiation of these SnCo electrodes in conventional organic electrolyte (EC:DMC LiPF6) at 30°C showed that their specific capacity was stable for about the first 12 cycles at a value near to the theoretical one for Li22Sn5 and, hence, progressively decayed.
New prototypes for the isolation of the anodic chambers in microbial fuel cells
2016
This work has been focused on the assessment of new prototypes of MFC in which a more strict separation of the anode and cathode compartments is looked for, in order to attain strict anaerobic conditions in the anode chamber and hence, avoid lack of efficiency due to the prevalence of non-electrogenic competing microorganisms and to optimize composition of the anolyte and catholyte. A cylinder reactor with an inner chamber with graphite bars acting as anodes and the outer one with a stainless steel tube acting as cathode was used in three different configurations and results obtained during lifetests are compared in terms of electricity production, cathode oxygen consumption and anode COD d…
Anodization and anodic oxides
2018
Anodizing is a low-temperature, low-cost electrochemical process allowing for the growth, on the surface of valve metals and valve metal alloys, of anodic oxides of tunable composition and properties. This article is an overview on theoretical aspects concerning the general aspects of the kinetics of growth of barrier and porous anodic oxides and some of their present and possibly future technological applications of anodic oxides. The first part of the article is devoted to anodic oxide growth models, from Guntherschulze and Betz work (in 1934) to the more recent results on barrier and porous oxide films. The second part is focused on industrial processes to fabricate anodic oxides and the…
Synthesis of self-standing Pd nanowires via galvanic displacement deposition
2009
This work shows that it is possible to obtain self-standing Pd nanowires into anodic alumina membranes by a simple metal displacement deposition. By using a proper arrangement, specifically designed in order to optimize the process, polycrystalline Pd nanowires were deposited from a solution containing Pd(NH3)4(NO3)2 as precursor. Morphological analysis showed the formation of perfectly aligned nanowires with a uniform diameter throughout the entire length. This last parameter was controlled by both the deposition time and the ratio between the anodic area (active metal) and the cathodic area (pore bottom). Investigation of ISIS and Brookhaven National Laboratory ion source electrodes after extended operation.
2012
Linac4 accelerator of Centre Européen de Recherches Nucléaires is under construction and a RFdriven H− ion source is being developed. The beam current requirement for Linac4 is very challenging: 80 mA must be provided. Cesiated plasma discharge ion sources such as Penning or magnetron sources are also potential candidates. Accelerator ion sources must achieve typical reliability figures of 95% and above. Investigating and understanding the underlying mechanisms involved with source failure or ageing is critical when selecting the ion source technology. Plasma discharge driven surface ion sources rely on molybdenum cathodes. Deformation of the cathode surfaces is visible after extended opera…
Use of RGB digital video analysis to study electrochemical processes involving color changes
2017
Color changes on an electrode surface during the course of electrochemical processes were monitored by in situ digital video recording. The evolution of standard red, green and blue (sRGB) intensity channels extracted from digital images showed a close relationship with the electrochemical processes taking place. In particular, the derivative of the sRGB mean intensity with respect to time (dI−/dt) gave useful insights into the electrochemical mechanism. The standard deviation (std) of the sRGB intensity provided information about the color homogeneity of the studied region on the electrode surface. We selected poly(o-toluidine) electrochromism on a transparent electrode and anodic copper d…
Use of the electrochemical microcell technique and the SVET for monitoring pitting corrosion at MnS inclusions
2004
The purpose of this paper is to report on use of the electrochemical microcell technique and the scanning vibrating electrode technique for monitoring pitting corrosion on the same stainless steel microstructure. First, the electrochemical behaviour of sites containing a single inclusion was investigated in order to the determine both the successive steps occurring during the inclusions activation and some key-parameters such as the onset potential for MnS dissolution and the pitting potential. Then, the local current distribution around a pitting site was monitored at open circuit potential in order to locate anodic and cathodic regions and to obtain informations on the galvanic coupling b…
Resistive switching in microscale anodic titanium dioxide-based memristors
2018
Licence CC BY-NC-ND The potentiality of anodic TiO2 as an oxide material for the realization of resistive switching memory cells has been explored in this paper. Cu/anodic-TiO2/Ti memristors of different sizes, ranging from 1 × 1 μm2 to 10 × 10 μm2 have been fabricated and characterized. The oxide films were grown by anodizing Ti films, using three different process conditions. Measured IV curves have shown similar asymmetric bipolar hysteresis behaviors in all the tested devices, with a gradual switching from the high resistance state to the low resistance state and vice versa, and a R_OFF/R_ON ratio of 80 for the thickest oxide film devices.
Repassivation of the damage generated by cavitation on UNS N08031 in a LiBr solution by means of electrochemical techniques and Confocal Laser Scanni…
2010
Abstract The objective of this work is to study the influence of cavitation on the corrosion behaviour of Alloy 31, a highly-alloyed austenitic stainless steel (UNS N08031), in a LiBr heavy brine solution (992 g/L) at 25 °C. The presence of cavitation shifted the OCP value towards the active direction by 708 mVAg/AgCl, increased anodic current densities and passivation current density, ip, and reduced the pitting potential, Ep. Repassivation behaviour of Alloy 31 has been investigated by using potentiostatic tests at different potentials. The current density transient obtained after interrupting cavitation was used to obtain the repassivation index, n, provided by the slope of the log i(t) …
