Abstract The present study aims to evaluate the antibacterial activity and biological properties of two traditional Saharian plants (Cymbopogon schoenanthus and Ziziphus lotus). The plant extracts were obtained by using a different combination of extraction methods (conventional vs. ultrasound-assisted) and solvents (water vs. ethanol:water (50:50, v/v)). The antioxidant profile, anti-inflammatory activity and impact on bacterial growth (foodborne and probiotic bacteria) of the obtained extracts were assessed. A three-step electrochemical process is developed to grow a coating on Ti6Al4V alloy for biomedical applications aimed to enhance its bioactivity. A new approach to predict the fish fillet shelf-life in presence of natural preservative agents

Three data sets concerning the behaviour of spoilage flora of fillets treated with natural preservative substances (NPS) were used to construct a new kind of mathematical predictive model. This model, unlike other ones, allows expressing the antibacterial effect of the NPS separately from the prediction of the growth rate. This approach, based on the introduction of a parameter into the predictive primary model, produced a good fitting of observed data and allowed characterising quantitatively the increase of shelf-life of fillets.
Isolation, structure elucidation, and biological evaluation of the unusual heterodimer chrysoxanthone from the ascomycete IBWF11-95A

Chrysoxanthone, an unusual heterodimer of blennolide A and 2-hydroxychrysophanol linked through a diaryl ether bridge, was isolated from mycelia of the ascomycete IBWF11-95A grown in submerged culture. Its structure was elucidated by two-dimensional NMR spectroscopy. The metabolite shows antibacterial activity against different species with MIC values between 2.5 and 20 μg/mL while also inhibiting the growth of several fungi.
