Combining in the melt physical and biological properties of poly(caprolactone) and chlorhexidine to obtain antimicrobial surgical monofilaments.

Bacterial infections on a sutured wound represent a critical problem, and the preparation of suture threads possessing antimicrobial properties is valuable. In this work, poly(caprolactone) (PCL) monofilaments were compounded at the concentration of 1, 2 and 4 % (w/w), respectively, to the antiseptic chlorhexidine diacetate (CHX). The incorporation was carried out in the melt by a single-step methodology, i.e. “online” approach. Mechanical tests revealed that the incorporation of CHX does not significantly change tensile properties of PCL fibres as the thermal profile adopted to prepare the compounded fibres does not compromise the antibacterial activity of CHX. Assessment of the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of different olive processing wastewaters.

Olive processing wastewaters (OPW), namely olive mill wastewater (OMW) and table-olive wastewaters (TOW) were evaluated for their antibacterial activity against five Gram-positive and two Gram-negative bacteria using the standard disc diffusion and thin layer chromatography (TLC)-bioautography assays. Disc diffusion screening and bioautography of OMW were compared to the phenolic extracts of table-olive brines. Positive activity against S. aureus was demonstrated. The optimization of chromatographic separation revealed that hexane/acetone in the ratio of 4:6 was the most effective for phenolic compounds separation. A small library of compounds with an oxa(thia)zole scaffold and structural diversity in both positions 2 and 5 has been synthesized. Double acylation of a protected glycine affords intermediate alpha-amido-beta-ketoesters, which in turn can be dehydrated to afford 1,3-oxazoles or reacted with Lawesson's reagent to furnish 1,3-thiazoles. This procedure was designed with its adaptation to fluorous techniques in mind. Chemical composition of the essential oil of Phagnalon saxatile (L.) Cass. (Asteraceae) growing wild in Southern Italy

Abstract The essential oil from aerial parts of Phagnalon saxatile (L.) Cass. (Asteraceae) was obtained by hydrodistillation. The oil content was 0.15% (v/w), on a dry weight basis. The oil composition was analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Altogether 66 compounds were identified accounting for 93.2% of the oil. Sesquiterpenes represent the 23.9% of the oil. In the oil were also present fatty acids (21.8%) and waxes (19.3%). The oil shows no antibacterial activity.

Mechanism of Antibacterial Activity via Morphology Change of α-AgVO3: Theoretical and Experimental Insights

The electronic configuration, morphology, optical features, and antibacterial activity of metastable α-AgVO3 crystals have been discussed by a conciliation and association of the results acquired by experimental procedures and first-principles calculations. The α-AgVO3 powders were synthesized using a coprecipitation method at 10, 20, and 30 °C. By using a Wulff construction for all relevant low-index surfaces [(100), (010), (001), (110), (011), (101), and (111)], the fine-tuning of the desired morphologies can be achieved by controlling the values of the surface energies, thereby lending a microscopic understanding to the experimental results. The presence of conifer resin decreases the use of the immune system in wood ants.
