A radioimmunoassay using N-[3-(4-hydroxy-3-[4-hydroxy-3- [125I]iodophenylpropionyl)]-5-methoxytryptamine as tracer for determination of melatonin in the serum of different species is described. Melatonin antisera were raised in rabbits by immunization with a bovine serum albumin conjugate of N-[3-(2-aminoethyl)-5-methoxy indole] hemisuccinamide. A single high affinity, specific antiserum was obtained. In contrast to previous studies, the tracer was synthesised in one step in the absence of water, giving an excellent yield of highly pure product. No chromatographic purification step was needed. Response to hepatitis A and B vaccines has been reported to decline with age. This open, prospective, single-site study examined the long-term response to the combined hepatitis A/B vaccine Twinrix in 98 primary responders aged 45-67 years. Levels of antibody against hepatitis A virus (HAV) and hepatitis B surface antigen (HBs) were tested 30 months after initial vaccination. At this stage, all participants remained seropositive for anti-HAV and 70% for anti-HBs. A booster vaccination was offered to those who had responded to the first vaccination but then lost protective levels of anti-HBs. An anamnestic response was observed in all cases.

The effect of the histamine H2-receptor antagonist, cimetidine, on the cutaneous Arthus-like hypersensitivity to oxazolone elicited injecting subcutaneously oxazolone conjugated to egg-albumin (EA-OX) has been examined in the chicken. Cimetidine had opposite effects on the cutaneous reaction to oxazolone in relation to a different immunization schedule. Pernasal therapy of cryptorchidism with D-Leu6-des-Gly10-gonadotropin-releasing hormone ethylamide (D-Leu6-des-Gly10-GnRH-EA), a potent, long-acting GnRH analog, was attempted. Eleven prepubertal cryptorchid boys received between 25 microgram once daily and 25 to 50 microgram twice daily for 5 to 12 weeks. Complete testicular descent was achieved in 4 of the 11 boys. Abstract Estrogen receptor (ER) expression and proliferative activity are established prognostic factors in breast cancer. In a search for additional prognostic motifs, we analyzed the gene expression patterns of 200 tumors of patients who were not treated by systemic therapy after surgery using a discovery approach. After performing hierarchical cluster analysis, we identified coregulated genes related to the biological process of proliferation, steroid hormone receptor expression, as well as B-cell and T-cell infiltration.
