Luminescence of Er/Yb and Tm/Yb doped FAp nanoparticles and ceramics
2015
The nanoparticles of hydroxiapatite and fluorapatite doped with Er/Yb and Tm/Yb were synthesized and characterized by FTIR, XRD, SEM and TEM methods. The results of up-conversion luminescence studies were presented for the samples as prepared, annealed at 500°C and at 900-1000 °C. At annealing above 800°C the ceramic state was formed. It is shown that fluorapatite host is more appropriate than hydroxiapatite host for rare ions luminescence and up-conversion processes. The post preparing annealing of nanarticles significantly enhanced the luminescence intensity. The Tm/Yb doped fluorapatite shows intense up-conversion luminescence in 790-800 nm spectral region and is potentially useful for b…
Traversing Phase Fields towards Nanosized Beta Tricalcium Phosphate
2013
The difficulty of beta tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) crystallization in aqueous media opens the question whether β-TCP can be produced using an alternative pathway. Amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) is metastable in an aqueous environment and prefers a more stable apatite phase. Others have transformed a crystallized calcium deficient hydroxyapatite (Ca-def HAp) into β-TCP, but automatic transformation from ACP to Ca-def HAp followed by transformation to β-TCP has not been addressed. This work shows the formation of Ca-def HAp after different aging times of ACP and the subsequent transition to β-TCP. An amorphous phase with a Ca/P ratio of 1.5 was synthesized, rinsed, filtered and excess flu…

Histological and histomorphometrical analysis of a silica matrix embedded nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite bone substitute using the subcutaneous impla…
2010
The clinical suitability of a bone substitute material is determined by the ability to induce a tissue reaction specific to its composition. The aim of this in vivo study was to analyze the tissue reaction to a silica matrix-embedded, nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite bone substitute. The subcutaneous implantation model in Wistar rats was chosen to assess the effect of silica degradation on the vascularization of the biomaterial and its biodegradation within a time period of 6 months. Already at day 10 after implantation, histomorphometrical analysis showed that the vascularization of the implantation bed reached its peak value compared to all other time points. Both vessel density and vascula…
Calcium phosphate/polyvinyl acetate coatings on SS304 via galvanic co-deposition for orthopedic implant applications
2021
Abstract In this work, the galvanic deposition method is used to deposit coatings of brushite/hydroxyapatite/polyvinyl acetate on 304 stainless steel. Coatings are obtained at different temperatures and with different sacrificial anodes, consisting of a mixture of brushite and hydroxyapatite. Samples are aged in a simulated body fluid (SBF), where a complete conversion of brushite into hydroxyapatite with a simultaneous change in morphology and wettability occurred. The corrosion tests show that, compared with bare 304, the coating shifts Ecorr to anodic values and reduces icorr Ecorr, and icorr has different values at different aging times due to chemical interactions at the solid/liquid i…
The effect of combining laser and nanohydroxy-apatite on the surface properties of enamel with initial defects
2017
Background The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of combining fractional CO2 LASER and nanohydroxy apatite on surface microhardness and color of enamel with initial defects. Material and Methods Two types of nano hydroxylapatite (nHAP) was prepared; Pure hydroxyapatite (nHA) and Fluoro hydroxyapatite (nFHA), Sixty extracted premolar teeth without visible caries or structural defects on enamel surface were used, immersed in 10 ml of a demineralizing solution for 2 weeks to create artificial white spot lesions, they were randomly allocated into two groups; Group 1: nHA, Group 2: nFHA, each group is then subdivided into 2 subgroups (A and B) where two different in vitroremineralizat…
Novel chemical reaction co-precipitation method for the synthesis of apatite-type lanthanum silicate as an electrolyte in SOFC
2017
Abstract Apatite-type lanthanum silicates have promising performance as electrolyte materials for IT-SOFC. A novel co-precipitation method, based on chemical reaction, is employed in the synthesis process. The reaction products: La(OH) 3 and SiO 2 are used as precursors of apatite synthesis process. The precursors are mixed in molecular scale which provide much conducive to formation reaction. The pure apatite phase composition is obtained with quite moderate temperature of 700 °C for 6 h which shows considerable ionic conductivity performance. The conductivity decreases when you increase the calcination temperature in according with XRD measurement. The XRD measurement shows the presence o…
Production and Characterization of Oxyhydroxyapatites
2018
The amount and alignment of hydroxyl ions influence the bioactivity of hydroxyapatite. Hydroxyl ions in hydroxyapatite are the most mobile and upon heating are the first to leave the lattice to form oxyhydroxyapatite. This work describes a method for producing hydroxyapatite with different amounts of hydroxyl ions, and reports on the changes in Fourier transform infrared absorption at increasing level of dehydroxylation. Detailed analysis of spectra in the 500 – 700 cm-1 range showed a peak shift for the hydroxyl ion absorption line at 632 cm-1 to 637 cm-1 and an increase in the wavenumber for the phosphate line at 575 cm-1.
Charge State of Silver Halide Colloids Determines the Antibacterial Activity in Amorphous Calcium Phosphate
2013
Removal of bacteria is important not only at implantation, but after long-term implant/prosthesis use. This requires strategies that employ different approaches for combating bacteria. Halides have the potential of an additional mechanism, and together with silver may provide a more powerful antibacterial strategy. Silver iodide was synthesized as colloids with a positive and negative charge and incorporated into an amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP) to provide a possible greater antibacterial action. Colloids were characterized by FTIR spectroscopy and the charge measured by zeta potential. Phase analysis by X-ray diffraction patterns confirmed the formation of b-AgI nanoparticles. Minimum …
Effect of hydroxyapatite concentration and size on morpho-mechanical properties of PLA-based randomly oriented and aligned electrospun nanofibrous ma…
2019
The growing demand for nanofibrous biocomposites able to provide peculiar properties requires systematic investigations of processing-structure-property relationships. Understanding the morpho-mechanical properties of an electrospun scaffold as a function of the filler features and mat microstructure can aid in designing these systems. In this work, the reinforcing effect of micrometric and nanometric hydroxyapatite particles in polylactic acid-based electrospun scaffold presenting random and aligned fibers orientation, was evaluated. The particles incorporation was investigated trough Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in attenuated total reflectance. The morphology of the nanofibers …
