Approaching the Bench: Teaching Magistrates and Judges how to Work Effectively with Interpreters
2015
Reports about judicial misunderstandings of the interpreting process are common (Berk-Seligson 2008; Morris 2010; Hale 2011a). The misconception that interpreters ‘just translate’ from one language to another by swapping individual words from language A to language B in a mechanical, uncomplicated way, is still prevalent among some legal professionals. Research into court interpreting, however, has highlighted the complexities involved in attempting to achieve a pragmatically accurate rendition in conditions that are usually less than adequate (Hale 2004; Mikkelson 2008; Hale & Stern 2011). In order for court interpreting to be successful, all parties must be aware of its challenges and…
Early markers of language delay in children with and without family risk for dyslexia
2015
Accepted manuscript version. Published version at http://doi.org/10.1177/0142723715596122. This study examined the extent to which receptive and productive vocabulary between ages 12 and 18 months predicted language skills at age 24 months in children born with family risk for dyslexia (FR) and a control group born without that risk. The aim was to identify possible markers of early language delay. The authors monitored vocabulary growth in 32 FR children and 21 control children longitudinally by using the Norwegian adaption of the MacArthur–Bates Communicative Development Inventories. The results show different patterns in the two groups: the study found a stronger interdependence of early…
La imparcialidad en la interpretación policial
2015
2020
ABSTRACT: The Chapel of the Virgin of Guadalupe, located in the Monastery of the Royal Discalced Nuns of Madrid, features a complex iconographical program, with the Virgin and the strong women of the Old Testament as its protagonists. This program was executed by the artist Sebastián Herrera Barnuevo, and designed by one of its resident nuns, Sister Ana Dorotea de Austria. This article attempt to shed light an a rather uncommon feminine typology: that of the daughters of Job, Jemima and Keren-happuch by means of the study of the principal literary sources where they are mentioned. By this means I will offer a complete reading of the Chapel’s iconographical program, by establishing the relat…
Age-related effects on lexical, but not syntactic, processes during sentence production
2021
ABSTRACT We investigated the effect of healthy ageing on the lexical and syntactic processes involved in sentence production. Young and older adults completed a semantic interference sentence production task: we manipulated whether the target picture and distractor word were semantically related or unrelated and whether they fell within the same phrase (“the watch and the clock/hippo move apart”) or different phrases (“the watch moves above the clock/hippo”). Both age groups were slower to initiate sentences containing a larger, compared to a smaller, initial phrase, indicating a similar phrasal scope of advanced planning. However, older adults displayed significantly larger semantic interf…

Kapitlet viser hvordan …
New metrics for analysis and presentation of device-based indices of physical activity : Exploration of a novel way of reducing accelerometer data in…
2021
Master's thesis in Sports science (ME517) Background: Device-based measurements of human behavior are becoming the standard tool to collect precise, valid, and free-living indices of habitual physical activity. However, differences between brands and lack of consensus regarding data reduction strategies, hampers between and within study comparisons. New metrics such as the analytical (average acceleration and intensity gradient) and translational metrics (MX) proposed by Rowlands et al. (2019a) might overcome some of these limitations. Currently the new metrics have not been applied to large representative data sets and comparisons of measurement properties between traditional and new accel…
