New pregnane and phenolic glycosides from Solenostemma argel.

Abstract From the aerial parts, pericarps and roots of Solenostemma argel, three new pregnane glycosides (1–3) with two known ones and a new phenolic glycoside (4) have been isolated. Their structures were established by extensive 1D – and 2D NMR and mass spectroscopic analysis. The cytotoxicity of all compounds was evaluated against two human tumor cell lines (SW 480, MCF-7), but none of them was active in the concentration range 0.9–59.0 μM. Compounds 2 and the known argeloside F at non toxic concentrations for the PBMCs (27.3 μM and 27.6 μM, respectively) significantly decreased the Il-1β production by LPS-stimulated PBMCs. Nerium oleander (NO), a member of the Apocynaceae family, is an ornamental plant. In this study, we evaluated the antiviral activity of hot and cold extract of NO against six different viruses such as herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1), polio virus type 1 (Sb-1), vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV), reovirus type-1 (Reo-1), human immunodeficiency virus type-1 (HIV-1), and yellow fever virus (YFV). Interestingly the results of plaque reduction assay demonstrated that both, hot extract and cold extract (breastin) of NO inhibited Sb-1 viral infection. Development of an efficient system for the separation of indole alkaloids by high performance liquid chromatography and its applications

An efficient system for the analysis of indole alkaloids by HPLC on a reversed-phase column using an ion pair technique is described. The optimised chromatographic conditions allowed the successful separation of 22 standard monoterpenoid indole alkaloids (including some isomers) and tryptamine. The described HPLC system was applied to the analysis of alkaloids in intergeneric somatic hybrid cell cultures of Rauvolfia serpentina x Rhazya stricta.
Induction of alkaloid diversity in hybrid plant cell cultures

The treatment of Rauwolfia serpentina x Rhazya stricta somatic hybrid cell suspension culture with 100 μM of methyl jasmonate led to a general increase in indole alkaloid content and to qualitative changes in the alkaloid pattern. The content of Six alkaloids were investigated with respect to their content in both the cell biomass and nutrition medium. Intracellular 17-O-acetyl-norajmaline content on the 5th day after treatment had increased about 40-fold compared with the control culture. The respective concentrations of the other alkaloids increased by a factor of two to five.
