Kudoa trifolia sp. n. ? molecular phylogeny suggests a new spore morphology and unusual tissue location for a well-known genus

A new species of myxozoan, Kudoa trifolia sp. n., was found in various organs of the golden grey mullet, Liza aurata (Risso), and the thinlip mullet, L. ramada (Risso), from the western Mediterranean. Spores developed in subspherical plasmodia of 0.28-1 mm diameter within connective tissue, predominantly in the spleen, the outer wall of the gall bladder and the gut, the mesenteries and occasionally also in the gills. The spores of K. trifolia differ from the commonly known shape of Kudoa by considerable enlargement of one of the four valve cells, thus forming a 'spore body', which contains the major part of the binucleate sporoplasm. Die Behandlungsqualitat bei akuter Appendicitis wird von der Quote an Appendixperforationen, der Rate entfernter blander Appendices und der perioperativen Morbiditat bestimmt. Im Rahmen einer prospektiven Datenerfassung wurden zwischen 1. 4. 1993 und 30. 7. 1996 alle 271 unter dem Verdacht einer akuten Appendicitis operierten Patienten erfast. Bolboporites is an enigmatic Ordovician cone-shaped fossil, the precise nature and systematic affinities of which have been controversial over almost two centuries. For the first time, a wide range of techniques (CT-scan, SEM, cathodoluminescence, XPL, UV epifluorescence, EBSD, FT-IR and XRF spectrometry) were applied to well-preserved specimens of Bolboporites from Norway and Russia. Our main finding confirms its echinoderm affinities, as shown by its stereomic microstructure and by the first definitive evidence of its monocrystalline nature. Introduction: Appendiceal mucocele is a relatively rare condition characterized by progressive dilation of the appendix caused by intraluminal accumulation of mucoid substance. Its incidence is 0.07 - 0,63% of all appendectomies performed. Case report: We report the case of a 70-year-old man who came to our observation with gravative pain in right lower abdominal region. A computed tomography abdominal scan revealed a cystic/tubular structure like an appendicular mass with wall enhancement but without calcifications suggestive of a mucocele. Highlights • Abdominal pain due to acute appendicitis in one of the most causes of access to Emergency Room requiring surgical consult and treatment. • The occurrence of anatomical anomalies should be considered especially when clinical and imaging features are misleading. In these cases laparoscopic surgery can be a safe tool in order to confirm uncertain diagnosis. • We report a case of acute appendicitis in a 23-year-old Caucasian men with situs viscerum inversus detected on radiological investigation. • Laparoscopic approach was used to confirm the diagnosis and to perform appendectomy.
