Super-resolved Imaging based upon spatial depolarization of light

2010

In this paper we present a new approach allowing the surpassing of the diffraction based limitation for the achievable resolution provided by imaging systems. It is based on an encoding-decoding process of various spatial pixels or regions in the field of view of the imaged object by orthogonal and differently time varying polarization states. The reconstruction of the original spatial information is obtained by applying a decoding process in a way similar to the encoding one. Although all the spatial information is summed and mixed together by the system, the decoding provides super resolved imaging since in every spatial position the undesired spatial information having time varying polar…

Undergraduate experiment with fractal diffraction gratings

2011

We present a simple diffraction experiment with fractal gratings based on the triadic Cantor set. Diffraction by fractals is proposed as a motivating strategy for students of optics in the potential applications of optical processing. Fraunhofer diffraction patterns are obtained using standard equipment present in most undergraduate physics laboratories and compared with those obtained with conventional periodic gratings. It is shown that fractal gratings produce self-similar diffraction patterns which can be evaluated analytically. Good agreement is obtained between experimental and numerical results. © 2011 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Study of plastic deformation modes in zirconium by color image analysis

2004

Abstract Twinning, as a deformation mode, is a complement to slip. This paper deals with the study from a qualitative point of view, as well as from a quantitative one. Besides techniques widely used in materials science studies such as electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) or X-ray diffraction (XRD), colour image analysis technique are presented here. Its results manage to confirm or complete the ones obtained, thanks to others methods.

Specific Heat and Transport Functions of Water

2020

Numerous water characteristics are essentially ascribed to its peculiarity to form stronghydrogen bonds that become progressively more stable on decreasing the temperature. However, thestructural and dynamical implications of the molecular rearrangement are still subject of debate andintense studies. In this work, we observe that the thermodynamic characteristics of liquid water arestrictly connected to its dynamic characteristics. In particular, we compare the thermal behaviourof the isobaric specific heat of water, measured in different confinement conditions at atmosphericpressure (and evaluated by means of theoretical studies) with its configurational contribution obtainedfrom the value…

Delphi study for the design and validation of a questionnaire about digital competences in higher education

2016

The study of digital competence remains an issue of interest for both the scientific community and the supranational political agenda. This study uses the Delphi method to validate the design of a questionnaire to determine the perceived importance of digital competence in higher education. The questionnaire was constructed from different framework documents in digital competence standards (NETS, ACLR, UNESCO). The triangulation of non-parametric techniques made it possible to consolidate the results obtained through the Delphi panel, the suitability of which was highlighted through the expert competence index (K). The resulting questionnaire emerges as a good tool for undertaking future na…

CREAPP K6-12: Tool to evaluate the creative potential of app oriented to the design of personal digital storytelling

2018

An instrument is presented that allows primary school teachers to evaluate the potentiality to develop creativity that have playful  online app K6-12 focused on the development of digital storytelling (DST), so they can select those that can be used in the classroom for that purpose. The instrument validated consists of 48 indicators associated with the six dimensions of the creativity: flexibility, originality, fluency, problem solving, elaboration of products and co-edition and dissemination. It was designed based on the opinions of experts in creativity and Information and Communication Technologies of the didactic field, theory of education and methodology; also with the assessments and…

Numerical analysis of masonry structures via interface models

2001

The present paper is devoted to the theoretical formulation and numerical implementation of an interface model suitable to simulate the behavior of mortar joints in masonry structures. The interface laws are formulated in the framework of elasto-plasticity for non-standard materials in order to simulate the softening response which occurs along the decohesion process in presence of shear and tension tractions. A variable material dilatancy parameter is introduced together with a further geometrical dilatancy related to the roughness of contact surfaces after joint fracture. An asperity model is adopted with the aim to describe the evolution of the contact surface shape during the loss of co…

Damage and plasticity at the interfaces in composite materials and structures

2009

Abstract The structural behavior at the interface between two surfaces of ductile, brittle or quasi-brittle materials is studied by a new analytical elastoplastic damaging model. The model is developed in the framework of a thermodynamically consistent theory. The Helmholtz free energy is written to predict the materials’ hardening or softening. An isotropic damage is considered and the possible effects of dilatancy are taken into account including non-associative flow rules. The interface laws are presented both in a rate and a discrete incremental form. The analytical formulation is then implemented into a finite element code and two structural members are studied to validate the model. T…

Flow resistance law under equilibrium bed-load transport conditions

2018

Abstract The uniform flow resistance equation, in the form due to Manning or Darcy-Weisbach, is often applied to determine the stage-discharge relationship of a river cross-section. The application of this equation, namely the slope-area method, allows to indirectly measure by water level readings the corresponding river discharge. In this paper, a recently deduced flow resistance equation for open channel flow was tested during conditions of equilibrium bed-load transport. First the flow resistance equation was determined by dimensional analysis and applying the condition of incomplete self-similarity for the flow velocity profile. Then the analysis was developed by the following steps: (i…

Comments on “Mean velocity and turbulent characteristics of flow over half-cycle cosine sharp-crested weirs” by Salehi S., Esmaili K., Azimi A.H.

2019

Abstract In this paper the stage-discharge equation of a half-cycle cosine weir is theoretically deduced applying the Π-Theorem of dimensional analysis and the self-similarity theory. The coefficients of the new stage-discharge relationships are estimated using the results of the experimental runs by Salehi et al..
