A degenerating convection-diffusion system modelling froth flotation with drainage
2022
Abstract Froth flotation is a common unit operation used in mineral processing. It serves to separate valuable mineral particles from worthless gangue particles in finely ground ores. The valuable mineral particles are hydrophobic and attach to bubbles of air injected into the pulp. This creates bubble-particle aggregates that rise to the top of the flotation column where they accumulate to a froth or foam layer that is removed through a launder for further processing. At the same time, the hydrophilic gangue particles settle and are removed continuously. The drainage of liquid due to capillarity is essential for the formation of a stable froth layer. This effect is included into a previous…
Modelling the dynamics of the students’ academic performance in the German region of the North Rhine-Westphalia: an epidemiological approach with unc…
2013
Student academic underachievement is a concern of paramount importance in Europe, where around 15% of the students in the last high school courses do not achieve the minimum knowledge academic requirement. In this paper, we propose a model based on a system of differential equations to study the dynamics of the students academic performance in the German region of North Rhine-Westphalia. This approach is supported by the idea that both, good and bad study habits, are a mixture of personal decisions and influence of classmates. This model allows us to forecast the student academic performance by means of confidence intervals over the next few years.
Heuristics and meta-heuristics for 2-layer straight line crossing minimization
2003
AbstractThis paper presents extensive computational experiments to compare 12 heuristics and 2 meta-heuristics for the problem of minimizing straight-line crossings in a 2-layer graph. These experiments show that the performance of the heuristics (largely based on simple ordering rules) drastically deteriorates as the graphs become sparser. A tabu search metaheuristic yields the best results for relatively dense graphs, with a GRASP implementation as close second. Furthermore, the GRASP approach outperforms all other approaches when tackling low-density graphs.
Numerical Study of Blow-Up Mechanisms for Davey-Stewartson II Systems
2018
We present a detailed numerical study of various blow-up issues in the context of the focusing Davey-Stewartson II equation. To this end we study Gaussian initial data and perturbations of the lump and the explicit blow-up solution due to Ozawa. Based on the numerical results it is conjectured that the blow-up in all cases is self similar, and that the time dependent scaling is as in the Ozawa solution and not as in the stable blow-up of standard $L^{2}$ critical nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations. The blow-up profile is given by a dynamically rescaled lump.
A generalized Newton iteration for computing the solution of the inverse Henderson problem
2020
We develop a generalized Newton scheme IHNC for the construction of effective pair potentials for systems of interacting point-like particles. The construction is made in such a way that the distribution of the particles matches a given radial distribution function. The IHNC iteration uses the hypernetted-chain integral equation for an approximate evaluation of the inverse of the Jacobian of the forward operator. In contrast to the full Newton method realized in the Inverse Monte Carlo (IMC) scheme, the IHNC algorithm requires only a single molecular dynamics computation of the radial distribution function per iteration step, and no further expensive cross-correlations. Numerical experiments…

Normalized solutions to the mixed dispersion nonlinear Schrdinger equation in the mass critical and supercritical regime
2019
In this paper, we study the existence of solutions to the mixed dispersion nonlinear Schrödinger equation γΔ2u − Δu + αu =
TANGENTIAL DEFORMATIONS ON FIBRED POISSON MANIFOLDS
2005
In a recent article, Cattaneo, Felder and Tomassini explained how the notion of formality can be used to construct flat Fedosov connections on formal vector bundles on a Poisson manifold $M$ and thus a star product on $M$ through the original Fedosov method for symplectic manifolds. In this paper, we suppose that $M$ is a fibre bundle manifold equipped with a Poisson tensor tangential to the fibers. We show that in this case the construction of Cattaneo-Felder- Tomassini gives tangential (to the fibers) star products.
