Robust model calibration using determinist and stochastic performance metrics
2016
International audience; The aeronautics industry has benefited from the use of numerical models to supplement or replace the costly design-build-test paradigm. These models are often calibrated using experimental data to obtain optimal fidelity-to-data but compensating effects between calibration parameters can complicate the model selection process due to the non-uniqueness of the solution. One way to reduce this ambiguity is to include a robustness requirement to the selection criteria. In this study, the info-gap decision theory is used to represent the lack of knowledge resulting from compensating effects and a robustness analysis is performed to investigate the impact of uncertainty on…
Decision-aid for discrete multiple criteria decision making problems with imprecise data
1999
Abstract We describe ways of aiding decision making with a discrete set of alternatives. In many decision situations, it is not possible to obtain explicit preference information from the decision makers. Instead, useful decision-aid can be provided to the decision makers by describing what kind of weighting of the criteria result in certain choices of the alternatives. The suggested treatment is based on the basic ideas of the ELECTRE III method. The modelling of the preferences by pseudo-criteria is especially helpful in case the data, that is, the criterion values are imprecise. Unlike ELECTRE III, no ranking of the alternatives is produced. Based on a minimum-procedure in the exploitati…
Numerical study of the transverse stability of the Peregrine solution
2020
We generalise a previously published approach based on a multi-domain spectral method on the whole real line in two ways: firstly, a fully explicit 4th order method for the time integration, based on a splitting scheme and an implicit Runge--Kutta method for the linear part, is presented. Secondly, the 1D code is combined with a Fourier spectral method in the transverse variable both for elliptic and hyperbolic NLS equations. As an example we study the transverse stability of the Peregrine solution, an exact solution to the one dimensional nonlinear Schr\"odinger (NLS) equation and thus a $y$-independent solution to the 2D NLS. It is shown that the Peregrine solution is unstable against all…
Career goal-related social ties during two educational transitions: Antecedents and consequences
2010
Abstract This study examined adolescents’ career goal-related social ties during the transition from compulsory to post-compulsory education and during transition from post-compulsory education to working-life or further studies. A total of 687 Finnish adolescents aged 15–16 were surveyed of whom 654 also participated at the second measurement point one year later, and 497 three years later. Differences in career goal-related social ties were found according to gender, GPA, family structure, and SES. Moreover, social ties were associated with educational track after compulsory school above and beyond SES, GPA, and family structure. Adolescents who named a teacher or a romantic partner were …
Promoting Capabilities with a Drama Workshop among Foster Care Adolescents
2021
We assessed the impacts of a drama-based 13-session workshop among adolescents (N = 8) residing in a reform school due to severe conduct problems. The participants were interviewed three times duri...
Attitudes of referees in a multidisciplinary journal: An empirical analysis
2016
This paper looks at 10 years of reviews in a multidisciplinary journal, The Journal of Artificial Societies and Social Simulation (JASSS), which is the flagship journal of social simulation. We measured referee behavior and referees' agreement. We found that the disciplinary background and the academic status of the referee have an influence on the report time, the type of recommendation and the acceptance of the reviewing task. Referees from the humanities tend to be more generous in their recommendations than other referees, especially economists and environmental scientists. Second, we found that senior researchers are harsher in their judgments than junior researchers, and the latter ac…
Objectives and methodology: Guidelines of the Italian Society for Haemostasis and Thrombosis (SISET).
2009
A current goal of the Italian Society for Thrombosis and Haemostasis (SISET) is the production of guidelines for clinical conditions related to haemostasis and thrombosis. In 2006, the Executive Committee of SISET adopted a new program for the production of methodologically and scientifically sound guidelines aimed at both addressing clinical practice and stimulating new research. The first major step for this program was to train methodologists to manage working groups that compose the guidelines, and to create a reference document that describes the development of the program. The aim of the present paper is to report a short version of this methodological document, for those who wish to …
How to keep your staff healthy in the educational sector?
2021
The purpose of the paper is to identify risks and challenges for alternative forms of work during online classes for teaching personnel. Musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) affect the body’s bones, muscles, joints, ligaments/tendons, and nerves. Musculoskeletal health risk in the educational sector should be taken into consideration to ensure the safety and healthy employees, especially when online classes require a physical inactivity and a prolonged sitting in front of the computer. MSD management requires an integrated approach integrating wellbeing with a focus on prevention, recognizing physical, social and emotional influences and early intervention. Workplace wellness has been a valuable…
Adolescent boys with asthma – a pilot study on embodied gendered habits
2012
Thomas Westergren,1 Ulla-Britt Lilleaas21Faculty of Health and Sport Science, Department of Health and Nursing Science, University of Agder, Grimstad, Norway; 2Faculty of Humanities and Education, Centre for Gender and Equality, University of Agder, Kristiansand, NorwayPurpose: Asthma is a common chronic disease with gender differences in terms of severity and quality of life. This study aimed to understand the gendered practices of male asthmatic adolescents in terms of living with and managing their chronic disease. The study applied a sociological perspective to identify the gender-related practices of participants and their possible consequences for health and disease.Patients and metho…
Combined hepatectomy and radiofrequency ablation for multifocal hepatocellular carcinoma: a case report
2009
Introduction: At the present time, the best possible choice for the local management of a multifocal hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) developing on liver cirrhosis is multimodal treatment of the disease. Combined approach based on simultaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) together with limited surgical resection represents a valid choice of treatment. Case presentation: A 75-year-old white female patient affected of HCV-associated cirrhosis in BChild-Pugh’s functional class A5, developed a bifocal HCC. The patient had undergone a limited surgical resection together with simultaneous RFA, without intraoperative and postoperative surgical complications. At 36 months after surgery, still shows …
