The soundscape of the ceremonies for the beatification of St Teresa of Ávila in the Crown of Aragon, 1614
2015
[EN] The beatification of Saint Teresa of Ávila in October 1614 gave rise to widespread celebrations in many of the cities and towns of the Iberian Peninsula. Printed relaciones describing these celebrations, despite their limitations —in terms of political agenda, propaganda, rivalry and literary style— can nevertheless provide information about musical experience and can help to recreate the ephemeral soundscapes of these events. This article will focus on the ceremonies held in the Crown of Aragon, especially Saragossa and Barcelona, taking into consideration the typology of different musics —heraldic, divine and festive— and factors such as the moment in time, function, dynamic, urban s…
El català i l'aragonès, llengües en contacte (Edat Mitjana i Moderna)
2002
The paper deals first with those bibliographic sources concerning the relationship between Catalan and Aragonese lexis, analyzling the use of the two vulgar tongues in contact made by sources from the Aragonese area. Then, there is a study of a number of code-switching phenomena in various marriage documents from the 16th century found in the records of the Municipal Archives of Massalió (Terol), which show instances of such code-switching.
The expansion of a European feudal monarchy during the 13th Century: the Catalan-Aragonese Crown and the consequences of the conquest of the kingdoms…
2009
-Enric.Guinot@uv.es In the middle of the 13th century the Crown of Aragon conquered by military means the Muslim Mediterranean Coast of the Iberian Peninsula, incorporating it into the European feudal world; this resulted in the destruction of the Andalusí state and part of its society as well as in a redistribution of towns, villages, houses and lands among Christians. The historiography of some years ago emphasized the role of trade and urban burgesses in these new societies, but present opinion is more related to a long expansion of feudal society as well as the creation in Majorca and Valencia of a colonial society. Logically, the consequences of this process had also an effect in Catal…
The Aragonese version of The Chronicle of Morea or Libro de los fechos et conquistas del Principado de la Morea was ordered by Johan Ferrández d'Heredia, Grand Master of the Knights of Saint John of the Hospital, to his scriptorium in Avignon. Regardin…
Palermo
2021
Credit, Debt and FInances of the Queen's Household in the Crown of Aragon at the End of the Fourteenth Century. The Agreement between the Queen Viola…

At the end of the Fourteenth century, Queen’s treasury in the Crown of Aragon suffered from a heavy debt that made virtually impossible any ordinary payment. As a re…

AbstractDetermining the manganese concentration in shells of freshwater bivalves provides a unique way to obtain information about climate and environmental changes during time-intervals that pre-date instrumental data records. This approach, however, relies on a thorough understanding of how manganese is incorporated into the shell material –a point that remained controversial so far. Here we clarify this issue, using state-of-the-art X-ray absorption and X-ray emission spectroscopy in combination with band structure calculations. We verify that in the shells of all studied species manganese is incorporated as high-spin Mn2+, i.e. manganese always has the same valence as calcium. More impo…
Appearance and consolidation of a nationalist and progressive party in Spain : the case of Chunta Aragonesista in Aragon (from 1986 to 2012)
2012
The research presented in this thesis deals with the study of the contemporary Iberian nationalism which has influenced the territorial and national questions of Spain. Aragon, despite being a crossroad territory between France, Catalonia, Valencia, Castile and the Basque-Navarrese region, is often missing from this discussion. From a geopolitical point of view, Aragon appears to be like a “buffer” territory between central Spain and its borders. Moreover, due to these characteristics, Aragon has no two-party system PSOE/PP as is the case in Spain’s interior regions, but it also doesn’t have the hegemonic role of a NSWP (Non State-wide Parties), which defends a non-Spanish nationalism. What…
2015
It is well known that one of the most illustrious pages of the political and literary history of France is the one written by the Communist poet and novelist Aragon who united the idea of the nation with that of resistance, thus salvaging for the next generations the honor of the Republic. It is nonetheless true that his discourse advocating resistance and his calls, in various forms, for national unity are not only circumstantial. They participate in the progressive elaboration of a national myth that can be traced back to the 1930s and to Maurice Thorez, the leader of a party which added the adjective “French” to its name. It was Aragon's role to foster the literary aspect of this national…
2015
Aragon’s earlier writings had been deeply influenced by English and especially German languages and cultures. Nevertheless, Germany was to disappear between 1940 and 1942 as a source for his deeply referential poetry, letting southern poets emerge. The reasons for the new cultural orientation were obviously political, but literary as well, actually dating back to the thirties and to his discovery of how much courtly and love literatures owed to Italy, herself indebted to Occitan poetry.
