The article outlines the outstanding relevance of Dalibor Vesely an architect and teacher who has recently disappeared. He was born and brought up in Czechoslovakia but, since the early Sixties, he has lived in London where he was considered an authority for his insightful approach to architecture. The article is focused on his conception o…
Spazio, Rappresentazione, Architettura
2008
Natural light in the architectural interior: Fake news on the Caravaggio of Palermo
2022
The paper investigates the mystery of a painting, Caravaggio’s The Nativity, and the scope of certain design devices implied in the interior/exterior relationship and described as a function of recognisable physical elements. For a long time, it was believed that this painting, placed on the altar of the oratory of San Lorenzo, was made in Palermo. It is a piece of fake news detected by interpreting and examining an architectural interior. Here, the value of natural light emerges, and we glimpse an irrefutable truth and therefore achieve an understanding of what happens when observing The Nativity and the oratory. What is the difference between recognising and identifying the arche, that is…
An MAS-based subjective model for indoor adaptive thermal comfort
2015
The achievement of high level personalized sets of comfort parameters is contemplated within the more general context of the so-called smart buildings, where people, by means of the new communication technologies, become active actors to the process of the singling out and control of the best indoor conditions. This Dynamic Intelligence approach would usefully contribute to a better energy efficient and environmental friendly management of buildings. Multi-Agent schemes are suitable tools in this aim, since they are able to manage the user-building-plant system where the adaptivity of people to the indoor conditions is suitably achieved. In this paper a contribution to a development of the …
Baukunst. Goethe’s Notes for a Treatise on Architecture
2017
In Italy, Goethe’s interest in architecture increased. Back, with reference to Winckelmann, he started a small treatise on architecture. Dated 1795, it’s entitled Baukunst. It is a folder of 13 numbered pages, with some blank sheets and barely hinted pencil drawings that show its unfinished nature. Text on each page occupies the middle right of a folio and leaves the left side free to place corresponding drawings. The comparison between both text and drawings can give us a more complete view of Goethe’s architectural theory as counterpoint to his criticism and analytical or descriptive comments of buildings.
Superstrade urbane. Dall’alta velocità alle trasformazioni contemporanee
2013
This article focuses on urban freeway deconstruction processes that recognize this infrastructure as a resource to be reclaimed for urban regeneration. Since they first appeared, freeways have been more than simple carriers of traffic flow. Following the suggestions provided by Le Corbusier, Drexler and Rudofsky in their “ROADS” exhibition, Lawrence Halprin, Reyner Banham, particular attention is paid to the shift towards a larger set of aesthetic assumptions applied to highways. Fifty years after the iconic evocation of Autopia, urban freeways no longer embody the modern value of speed: they must increasingly deal with ecological challenges and re-cycling processes. The nodes where infrast…
A Generative Design System to interactively explore different urban scenarios
2010
In this paper we present a new parametric approach based on urban regulation, in order to generate digital models of building, directly within a three-dimensional geo-referenced environment. The system allows user, through implementation of specific generative procedures, to manage interactive architectural design processes. The designer is able to explore all possible infinite scenarios and the various possible design alternatives, by changing the parameters values and verifying in real time the results of the changes. This paper presents a short review of the main related works and an experiment.
A Generative System to support architectural and urban design
2011
The work presents a system able to generate three-dimensional models of buildings, directly within a 3D geobrowser as Google EarthTM. For this purpose we have developed the prototype of a parametric application that allows the designer to handle the architectural shape by using the main constraints belong to urban regulations. The system integrates two different research topics: modelling in geo-referenced environment and modelling constraints. Compared to the related works (Building Modeling within georeferenced environment), our application is the first Generative Design System based on the urban regulation. It is a Decision Support System (DDS), useful at the early stage of city planning…
Approche responsable pour le patrimoine : coopération, participation, documentation / Approccio responsabile al patrimonio architettonico: cooperazio…
2014
