Xyloglucan-derived oligosaccharides induce ethylene synthesis in persimmon (Diospyros kaki L.) fruit

In this work the effect of injection of xyloglucan-derived oligosaccharides (XGOs) into whole persimmon (Diospyros kaki L.) fruits on ethylene biosynthesis was investigated. Fruits collected during different ripening stages produced low levels of ethylene without a climacteric-like peak. Pretreatment of these fruits with 10 cm 3 C 2 H4 m -3 for 8 h stimulated little or no endogenous ethylene production. However, when persimmon fruits were injected with a mixture of XGOs a burst in ethylene production was observed compared with water-injected control fruits or fruits injected with different monosaccharide solutions. Perfluorocarbon functionalized hyaluronic acid derivatives as oxygenating systems for cell culture

A set of new hyaluronic acid (HA) derivatives was obtained by binding fluorinated oxadiazole (OXA) moieties to an amino derivative of the polysaccharide (HA-EDA). The obtained HA-EDA-OXA biomaterials are potentially able to improve oxygenation into a scaffold for tissue engineering purposes. The oxygen solubility in aqueous dispersions of the obtained derivatives showed that polymers were able to improve oxygen uptake and maintenance in the medium. Keyhole limpet (Megathura crenulata) hemocyanin (KLH), an extracellular respiratory protein, is widely used as hapten carrier and immune stimulant. Although it is generally accepted that the sugar constituents of this glycoprotein are likely to be implicated in the antigenicity and biomedical properties of KLH, knowledge of its carbohydrate structure is still limited. Studies on the Fibrous Components of the Test ofCiona intestinalisLinnaeus. I. Cellulose-like Polysaccharide

Chemical, histochemical and electron microscopic studies on the fibrous polysaccharide component of the test of Ciona intestinalis L. were made. The results showed cellulose-like fibres to be present in the cuticle layer and in the ground substance. Bundles of fibres varying in diameter from 80 to 600 nm interweave to form a conspicuous network. The bundle appears to be formed of flat fibres, 10–13 nm in width, while the fibre is composed of fibrils 3.5–5 nm; the rectangular cross section of fibres can be supposed. The probable role of this polysaccharide is discussed.

Abstract A polysaccharide isolated after mild acid degradation of the lipopolysaccharide of Vibrio vulnificus clinical isolate YJ016 was found to contain l -Fuc, d -GlcpNAc, 2,4-diacetamido-2,4,6-trideoxy- d -glucose (di-N-acetylbacillosamine, d -QuiNAc4NAc), and 2-acetimidoylamino-2-deoxy- l -galacturonic acid ( l -GalNAmA). The last sugar derivative was confirmed by correlations for nitrogen-linked protons in 2D TOCSY and ROESY spectra measured in a H2O–D2O mixture. Endotoxins (lipopolysaccharides, LPS) are the main surface antigens and virulence factors of Gram-negative bacteria involved for example in the development of nosocomial infections and sepsis. They consist of three main regions: O-specific polysaccharide, core oligosaccharide, and lipid A. Bacteria modify LPS structure to escape the immune defence, but also to adapt to environmental conditions. Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is an anionic polysaccharide used mainly as stabilizer and thickener agent. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of CMC concentration on viscoelasticity of dairy and aqueous model systems through the analysis of creep and recovery tests. The viscoelastic properties of different concentrations of CMC (0.75, 1.00, 1.25, and 1.50% w/w) in two milk systems (skimmed milk and whole milk) were compared with those of the same concentration of biopolymer in aqueous solution. Abstract Creep and recovery tests have been performed to study the viscoelastic behavior of low oil content food emulsions. Formulations of salad dressings usually include modified starch (MS) due to its low cost and the special creamy texture if affords. The combination of starch with other natural gums may improve the quality of the product. Mechanical Characterization of Polysaccharide/polyaminoacid Hydrogels as Potential Scaffolds for Tissue Regeneration

The mechanical properties of hydrogel scaffolds based on hyaluronic acid (HA) that were chemically crosslinked with α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)(2-aminoethylcarbamate)-D,L-aspartamide (PHEA-EDA) were investigated. Variation of these properties as a function of three different PHEA-EDA amounts used to crosslink HA has been related to the reaction efficiency evaluated using a colorimetric assay. Interpolymer complexes and polymer compatibility.

A reliable method to decide whether two polymers A and B are miscible or incompatible would be very helpful in many ways. In this contribution we demonstrate why traditional procedures cannot work. We propose to use the intrinsic viscosities [η] of the polymer blends instead of the composition dependence of the viscosities as a criterion for polymer miscibility. Two macromolecules A and B are miscible because of sufficiently favorable interactions between the two types of polymer segments.
