GESTALT-INSPIRED FEATURES EXTRACTION FOR OBJECT CATEGORY RECOGNITION

2013

International audience; We propose a methodology inspired by Gestalt laws to ex- tract and combine features and we test it on the object cat- egory recognition problem. Gestalt is a psycho-visual the- ory of Perceptual Organization that aims to explain how vi- sual information is organized by our brain. We interpreted its laws of homogeneity and continuation in link with shape and color to devise new features beyond the classical proxim- ity and similarity laws. The shape of the object is analyzed based on its skeleton (good continuation) and as a measure of homogeneity, we propose self-similarity enclosed within shape computed at super-pixel level. Furthermore, we pro- pose a framework to …

Visual grouping under isoluminant condition: impact of mental fatigue

2016

Instead of selecting arbitrary elements our visual perception prefers only certain grouping of information. There is ample evidence that the visual attention and perception is substantially impaired in the presence of mental fatigue. The question is how visual grouping, which can be considered a bottom-up controlled neuronal gain mechanism, is influenced. The main purpose of our study is to determine the influence of mental fatigue on visual grouping of definite information – color and configuration of stimuli in the psychophysical experiment. Individuals provided subjective data by filling in the questionnaire about their health and general feeling. The objective evidence was obtained in t…

When WORDS with Higher-frequency Neighbours Become Words with No Higher-frequency Neighbour (Or How to Undress the Neighbourhood Frequency Effect)

2000

Abstract “SATOR AREPO TENET OPERA ROTAS” (The ploughman, with his plough, manages the work) The influence of lexical similarity on word recognition has been discussed not only because of its theoretical impact but also because it is difficult to replicate. Among the multiplicity of the causes of this inconsistency one reason can be that different words were used in comparing words with higher-frequency neighbours (HFN) and words without HFN. In this experiment we chose French words for which the neighbourhood changes when they are written in UPPER case or in lower case. For example ‘DEFI’ has one HFN (‘DEMI’) but when it is displayed in lower case ‘defi’ has no HFN because ‘demi’ has no acc…

A Light Insight into Latvian and Lithuanian ICT Terminology: Whether Kindred Language Imply Kindred Terminology?

2018

Lithuanian and Latvian are two closely related languages, the only two of the Baltic branch of Indo-European languages. They are quite similar and share a great deal of vocabulary and grammar features, but not close enough to make conversation possible. The paper reveals that commonalities between Latvian and Lithuanian information and communication technologies (ICT) terms are mostly due internationalisms, there are only small proportion of terms with common Baltic word-roots; influence of English language in Latvian and Lithuanian ICT terminology is moderate, if not minor; deliberately or unawares, Lithuanian terminologists follow the same rules as their Latvian counterparts.

Adaptive Vocabulary Learning Environment for Late Talkers

2016

The main aim of this research is to provide children who have an early language delay with an adaptive way to train their vocabulary taking into account individuality of the learner. The suggested system is a mobile game-based learning environment which provides simple tasks where the learner chooses a picture that corresponds to a played back sound from multiple pictures presented on the screen. Our basic assumption is that the more similar the concepts (in our case, words) are, the harder the recognition task is. The system chooses the pictures to be presented on the screen by calculating the distances between the concepts in different dimensions. The distances are considered to consist o…

Numerical study of blow-up in solutions to generalized Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations

2013

We present a numerical study of solutions to the generalized Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations with critical and supercritical nonlinearity for localized initial data with a single minimum and single maximum. In the cases with blow-up, we use a dynamic rescaling to identify the type of the singularity. We present a discussion of the observed blow-up scenarios.

Sexual and reproductive traits of Hypania invalida (Polychaeta, Ampharetidae): a remarkable invasive species in Central European waterways

2010

SUMMARY 1. The Ponto-Caspian polychaete Hypania invalida (Archiv fur Naturgeschichte, 1860, 26, 109) is undergoing rapid range expansion in the Rhine and other central European waterways. We examined its reproductive traits in an attempt to account for its remarkable invasive success. 2. For the first time in this species, we found males, dioecy (gonochorism) and an exclusively sexual mode of reproduction; no indication for hermaphroditism or (unisexual) partheno- genesis, that could explain the rapid range expansion of H. invalida, was found. 3. Our experimental evidence shows that H. invalida reproduces by males discharging their sperm into the water column while eggs are retained and fer…

New-stage discharge relationship for weirs of finite crest lenght

2014

AbstractThe flow process of weirs of finite crest length is analyzed on the basis of the dimensional analysis and incomplete self-similarity theory. The crest length is incorporated in the functional stage-discharge relationship for weirs of finite crest length. The theoretically deduced stage-discharge formula was then calibrated using the experimental data compiled in this research. According to the current experimental data it is also concluded that the performance of the proposed stage-discharge formula is better than the previous dimensional stage-discharge formulae. Also, the proposed stage-discharge formula is applicable for all types of the weirs, i.e., long-crested, broad-crested, …

Final Considerations and Open Scenarios

2016

European river contract experiences demonstrate a growing integration between these contractual agreements and the other instruments of water resources management, and urban and territorial planning. Therefore, river contracts represent innovative places for a new governance of river ecosystems and territories, also in compliance with subsidiarity principle. The twofold nature of these contractual agreements—technical dimension and concertative approach—together with their expected wide evolution, allow to identify river contracts not only as sectoral tools for water resource protection and management, but also as catalysts of a new culture of water, recalling the deep interrelationships ex…

ON THE BOUSSINESQ HIERARCHY

2002

A new sequence of nonlinear evolution systems satisfying the zero curvature property is constructed, by using the invariant singularity analysis. All these systems are completely integrable and a pseudo-potential (linearization) is explicitly determined for each of them. The second system of the sequence is the Broer-Kaup system, which, as is well known, corresponds to the higher order Boussinesq approximation in describing shallow water waves.
