Extramedullary Expansion of Hematopoietic Progenitor Cells in Interleukin (IL)-6–sIL-6R Double Transgenic Mice

Soluble cytokine receptors modulate the activity of their cognate ligands. Interleukin (IL)-6 in association with the soluble IL-6 receptor (sIL-6R) can activate cells expressing the gp130 signal transducer lacking the specific IL-6R. To investigate the function of the IL-6–sIL-6R complex in vivo and to discriminate the function of the IL-6–sIL-6R complex from the function of IL-6 alone, we have established a transgenic mouse model. Double-transgenic mice coexpressing IL-6 and sIL-6R were generated and compared with IL-6 and sIL-6R single-transgenic mice. Genetic Cell Ablation Reveals Clusters of Local Self-Renewing Microglia in the Mammalian Central Nervous System

SummaryDuring early embryogenesis, microglia arise from yolk sac progenitors that populate the developing central nervous system (CNS), but how the tissue-resident macrophages are maintained throughout the organism’s lifespan still remains unclear. Here, we describe a system that allows specific, conditional ablation of microglia in adult mice. We found that the microglial compartment was reconstituted within 1 week of depletion. Microglia repopulation relied on CNS-resident cells, independent from bone-marrow-derived precursors. Exacerbated experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis in mast-cell-deficient KitW-sh/W-sh mice

Mast cell (MC)-deficient c-Kit mutant Kit(W/W-v) mice are protected against experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an animal model of multiple sclerosis, suggesting a detrimental role for MCs in this disease. To further investigate the role of MCs in EAE, we took advantage of a recently characterized model of MC deficiency, Kit(W-sh/W-sh). Surprisingly, we observed that myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG)(35-55)-induced chronic EAE was exacerbated in Kit(W-sh/W-sh) compared with Kit(+/+) mice. On the statistical properties of the capacity of double Hoyt fading channels

The statistical properties of the capacity of narrowband double Hoyt fading channels are studied. Toward this end, analytical expressions for the probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the instantaneous channel capacity process are derived. Furthermore, for the characterization of the dynamical behavior of the time-varying channel capacity, expressions are provided for the level-crossing rate (LCR) and the average duration of fades (ADF). NMR data for 95Mo and 199Hg nuclei have been obtained for new di- and trimetallic complexes Cp′(CO)3MoHgX containing molybdenum-mercury bonds and bulky and/or potentially bifunctional substituted cyclopentadienyl ligands; Cp′=C5HMe2Ph2, C5Me4Bz, C5Bz5, C5H4PPh2 and C5Me4PPh2 (Bz=CH2C6H5; Me =CH3; Ph=C6H5); X=Cp′(CO)3Mo, Cl, Br, 1, SCN. They are discussed within the context of our earlier results reported for analogous complexes with the cyclopentadienyl ligands bearing methyl groups. Subphthalocyanines as narrow band red-light emitting materials

A series of new light emitting subphthalocyanines, lower homologues of phthalocyanines, were synthesized having color points covering the red-orange region of the visible spectrum. Additionally, they were found to be of potential use as narrow band emitters for red-light emitting diodes.

Secondary structure conformation of hydroperoxide lyase from green bell pepper, cloned in Yarrowia lipolytica, and its activity in selected media

International audience; Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy of secondary structure conformation of the purified green bell pepper hydroperoxide lyase (HPL), cloned in the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica, was investigated. The CD spectra of HPL in iso-octane, obtained at 60 °C, in the presence of the reducing agent dithiothreitol showed dramatic increase in α-helix content. The enzyme conformation remained unchanged over a range of pH values of 5.0–7.0.
