Incidence of heterotopic ossification in minimally invasive short-stem THA using the modified anterolateral approach.
2017
Introduction Heterotopic ossification (HO) is known to be a common complication after total hip arthroplasty (THA). The minimal invasive (MIS) modified anterolateral approach has become popular in combination with a short stem. We analysed the incidence of HO following short-stem THA using this approach in combination with a postoperative administration of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Materials and methods 216 short stems were implanted in 162 patients. NSAIDs were administered for 2 weeks after surgery in 154 patients (95.1%). Standardised pre- and postoperative radiographic imaging was done at 2-year follow-up. HO was analysed according to the Brooker classification. Inf…
Evaluation of labial microvessels in Sjogren syndrome: A videocapillaroscopic study
2008
Summary Sjogren's syndrome (SS) is a chronic autoimmune rheumatic disease characterized by a progressive lymphocytic infiltration of exocrine glands, especially salivary and lachrymal ones, leading to xerostomia, parotid gland enlargement, and xerophtalmia. SS may occur alone (primary) or in association with almost any of the autoimmune rheumatic diseases (secondary), the most frequent being rheumatoid arthritis. The aim of this study is to describe the capillaroscopic pattern of the labial mucosa in patients with SS. Methods A total of 20 patients affected by SS and 20 healthy controls were examined. The patients with conditions that compromise microcirculation, such as diabetes, hypertens…
Synovial giant cells in rheumatoid arthritis: Expression of cystatin C, but not of cathepsin B
2000
This study was designed to investigate the expression of the matrix degrading proteinase cathepsin B and its endogenous inhibitor cystatin C in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) with special regard to multinucleated synovial giant cells (SGC). We applied an immunohistochemical double-labeling technique. SGC strongly expressed cystatin C and CD68, but were negative for cathepsin B. This staining pattern occurred in osteoclasts as well. Our findings support the idea that in RA matrix destruction by cathepsin B is not mediated by SGC or osteoclasts, but by mononuclear synoviocytes.
Anakinra drug retention rate and predictive factors of long-term response in systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis and adult onset still disease
2019
Background and Objective: Only a few studies have reported long-term efficacy of interleukin (IL)-1 inhibition in systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (sJIA) and adult-onset Still disease (AOSD). Herein we report on the effectiveness of anakinra (ANA), expressed in terms of drug retention rate (DRR), and evaluate the predictive factors of drug survival in a cohort of patients with sJIA and AOSD. Patients and Methods: This is a multicenter study reviewing retrospectively the medical records from 61 patients with sJIA and 76 with AOSD, all treated with ANA in 25 Italian tertiary referral centers. Results: The cumulative retention rate of ANA at 12-, 24-, 48-, and 60-month of follow-up was 7…

COX-2 inhibition and pain management: a review summary
2005
Cyclooxygenase-2 selective inhibitors have long been regarded as potent anti-inflammatory drugs for the treatment of arthritis, osteoarthritis and dysmenorrhea. The reports of cardiovascular risk and the subsequent withdrawal of rofecoxib, and recently valdecoxib, has called the therapeutic potential of coxibs into question. Currently, according to the latest decisions of the US Food and Drug Administration and European Medicines Agency, the approval of valdecoxib has been refused for 1 year due to an increased rate of cardiovascular risks and serious skin reactions. There are restrictions concerning the use of all other coxibs. The short-time use of coxibs, however, in anti-inflammatory tr…
Early Vascular Aging in Normotensive Patients With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus
2015
Connective tissue diseases, like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), are associated with early and accelerated atherosclerosis. Recently, the concept of “early vascular aging” (EVA) has been more widely accepted. Aortic stiffness is one of the important markers of EVA. We evaluated EVA and subclinical atherosclerosis, by measuring aortic pulse wave velocity (aPWV) and carotid intima–media thickness (cIMT), in 50 normotensive patients with SLE (mean age: 39 ± 12 years). We compared these participants with 50 age- and sex-matched patients with essential hypertension (EH) and 20 healthy controls. Each participant underwent 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM), aPWV, and cIMT me…
Cre-mediated cell ablation contests mast cell contribution in models of antibody- and T cell-mediated autoimmunity.
2011
SummaryImmunological functions of mast cells remain poorly understood. Studies in Kit mutant mice suggest key roles for mast cells in certain antibody- and T cell-mediated autoimmune diseases. However, Kit mutations affect multiple cell types of both immune and nonimmune origin. Here, we show that targeted insertion of Cre-recombinase into the mast cell carboxypeptidase A3 locus deleted mast cells in connective and mucosal tissues by a genotoxic Trp53-dependent mechanism. Cre-mediated mast cell eradication (Cre-Master) mice had, with the exception of a lack of mast cells and reduced basophils, a normal immune system. Cre-Master mice were refractory to IgE-mediated anaphylaxis, and this defe…
Deaths Associated with Ankylosing Spondylitis in France from 1969 to 2009.
2017
Objective. To describe deaths for which ankylosing spondylitis (AS) was on death certificates in France.Methods.Death certificates in which AS was indicated were evaluated. Standard mortality ratio (SMR) was assessed.Results.AS appeared in 2940 death certificates. The mortality rate of AS seemed stable. The most frequent initial causes were diseases of the circulatory system [28.3% in the International Classification of Diseases, 10th ed (ICD-10)]. SMR adjusted for age and sex were 2.1 (95% CI 1.45–2.91) for infections and 0.43 (0.36–0.5) for cancers (ICD-10 period).Conclusion.This study found an increase in mortality from infectious and external causes of death; conversely, patients with AS…
The effectiveness of intra-articular injectionc of Hyalubrix combined with exercise therapy in the tratment of hip osteoarthritis
2017
Purpose. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disorder in the elderly, causing significant pain which negatively affects mobility and quality ol liie. The aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of ultrasound Ímage-guided intra-articular injections of Hyalubrix@ combined with exercise therapy in the treatment of hip osteoarthritis. Methods. This was a single site, prospèctive, open-fabel, Investigator-initiated study. Forty patients rilere enrolled and received three ultrasound image.guided injections of Hyalubrix@, 45 days apart, combined with three sessions a week of physícal therapy (proprioceptive rehabilitation of the lower limbs; gait training; balance training) up to…
