Uncertainties in shoreline position analysis: the role of run-up and tide in a gentle slope beach

2017

Abstract. In recent decades in the Mediterranean Sea, high anthropic pressure from increasing economic and touristic development has affected several coastal areas. Today the erosion phenomena threaten human activities and existing structures, and interdisciplinary studies are needed to better understand actual coastal dynamics. Beach evolution analysis can be conducted using GIS methodologies, such as the well-known Digital Shoreline Analysis System (DSAS), in which error assessment based on shoreline positioning plays a significant role. In this study, a new approach is proposed to estimate the positioning errors due to tide and wave run-up influence. To improve the assessment of the wave…

Signal reconstruction, modeling and simulation of a vehicle full-scale crash test based on Morlet wavelets

2012

Creating a mathematical model of a vehicle crash is a task which involves considerations and analysis of different areas which need to be addressed because of the mathematical complexity of a crash event representation. Therefore, to simplify the analysis and enhance the modeling process, in this paper a novel wavelet-based approach is introduced to reproduce acceleration pulse of a vehicle involved in a crash event. The acceleration of a colliding vehicle is measured in its center of gravity-this crash pulse contains detailed information about vehicle behavior throughout a collision. Three types of signal analysis are elaborated here: time domain analysis (i.e. description of kinematics of…

Physical modelling of the melt flow during large-diameter silicon single crystal growth

2003

Abstract The reported investigations concern physical modelling of Czochralski growth of silicon large-diameter single crystals. InGaSn eutectic was used as a modelling liquid, employing actual criteria of the real process (Prandtl, Reynolds, Grashof numbers, etc.) and geometric similarity. A multi-channel measuring system was used to collect and process the temperature and flow velocity data. The investigations were focused on the study of heat transfer, in particular, the instability of the “cold zone” of the melt at the crystallization front.

PTH-137 Safety and efficacy of simeprevir (SMV) plus PEG-IFN/RBV in treatment-naÏve chronic hepatitis c genotype 1 patients eligible for 12 weeks of …

2015

Introduction HPC3014 is a Phase 3, open-label study to assess if response to SMV+Peg-IFN/RBV at Week 2 can allow shortening of treatment to 12 weeks, irrespective of baseline and on-treatment factors. Method Treatment-naive chronic HCV G1-infected patients with no-to-moderate fibrosis (METAVIR F0–F2) were recruited. In patients with HCV-RNA ® Taqman ® lower limit of quantification: 25 IU/mL, lower limit of detection: 15 IU/mL]) at Week 2 and undetectable at Weeks 4 and 8, all treatments were stopped at Week 12 (12-week group). If these criteria were not met, Peg-IFN/RBV was continued to Week 24 (in one case extended to Week 48). Results 123/163 (76%) patients treated were eligible for the 1…

Efficacy of Low-Dose Paroxetine for the Treatment of Hot Flushes in Surgical and Physiological Postmenopausal Women: Systematic Review and Meta-Analy…

2019

Background and Objectives: Hot flushes and sleep disturbances are the most common vasomotor symptoms (VMS) reported by postmenopausal women. Hormonal treatment is to date referred to as the gold standard approach but not suitable for all the patients. Alternative treatments are needed in case of a contraindication to menopausal hormone therapy (MHT), adverse side effects, and poor compliance. Paroxetine salt is the only nonhormonal medication approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the management of VMS. Nonetheless, few trials with low consensus are available about this topic. In this review, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of low-dose paroxetine therapy in the treatment of v…

Ranking-based Ties Social Networks : an illustration based on a system of Fashion Capital Cities in the world.

2012

Our paper aims to apply a non-conventional Social Network Analysis to a network generated from an initial sorting of data with mere order. The aim is to test whether and how one relationship set 'conveniently' generated by the ranking is able to provide a coherent system of interactions with possible practical and theoretical utility. We consider a system of city distributions where we focus on ¿Ranking-Based Ties¿ social networks, considering a system of 'objects' of the same class that would be able to interact. The objects in question are ordered according to their 'performance' in a particular ranking. According to a survey developed by Global Langu…

Foreign language pronunciation skills and musical aptitude A study of Finnish adults with higher education

2010

Abstract The main aim of this study was to examine second language production and discrimination skills in the light of musical aptitude. Our study was conducted in university settings in south-western Finland. English was used as a model for the second language due to its popularity among young adults. There were three types of tests used in this study: a pronunciation test, a phonemic listening discrimination task, and the Seashore test as an index of the musical aptitude. All the participants performed equally well in the phonemic listening discrimination task. However, the participants with higher musical aptitude were able to pronounce English better than the participants with less mus…
