Regeneration of Sideritis angustifolia (Labiatae) Plants from Single Cell Cultures
1988
Summary Mechanically isolated cells from hypocotyl-derived calli of Sideritis angustifolia Lag. were inoculated on agar-solidified Murashige and Skoog (MS) nutrient medium containing CH and different concentrations and combinations of NAA and BA. Isolated cells underwent continued divisions giving rise to calli after 30 days of culture. Best results were obtained when medium was supplemented with 0.5 μM NAA and 4.4 or 8.8 μM BA or with 5 μM NAA and 4.4μM BA. Calli obtained in the presence of 0.5 μM NAA and 8.8 μM BA regenerated shoot-buds when transferred to MS medium without CH and supplemented or not with these growth regulators. Once shoots were excised, the calli maintained their morpho…
Evidence for the associated production of a W boson and a top quark in ATLAS at √s = 7 TeV
2012
This Letter presents evidence for the associated production of a W boson and a top quark using 2.05 fb[superscript −1] of pp collision data at √s = 7 TeV accumulated with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The analysis is based on the selection of the dileptonic final states with events featuring two isolated leptons, electron or muon, with significant transverse missing momentum and at least one jet. An approach based on boosted decision trees has been developed to improve the discrimination of single top-quark Wt events from background. A template fit to the final classifier distributions is performed to determine the cross-section. The result is incompatible with the background-only hypothes…
Open-source software tools for measuring resources consumption and DASH metrics
2020
When designing and deploying multimedia systems, it is essential to accurately know about the necessary requirements and the Quality of Service (QoS) offered to the customers. This paper presents two open-source software tools that contribute to these key needs. The first tool is able to measure and register resources consumption metrics for any Windows program (i.e. process id), like the CPU, GPU and RAM usage. Unlike the Task Manager, which requires manual visual inspection for just a subset of these metrics, the developed tool runs on top of the Powershell to periodically measure these metrics, calculate statistics, and register them in log files. The second tool is able to measure QoS m…
Distraction of cyclists: how does it influence their risky behaviors and traffic crashes?
2018
BackgroundUndisputedly, traffic crashes constitute a public health concern whose impact and importance have been increasing during the past few decades. Specifically, road safety data have systematically shown how cyclists are highly vulnerable to suffering traffic crashes and severe injuries derived from them. Furthermore, although the empirical evidence is still very limited in this regard, in addition to other human factors involved in cycling crashes, distractions while cycling appear to be a major contributor to the road risk of cyclists.ObjectivesThe main objectives of this study were, first, to explore the prevalence and trends of cycling distractions within an international sample o…
Relationship between off-ice testing variables and on-ice speed in women's collegiate synchronized figure skaters: implications for training.
2010
The purpose of the current investigation was to identify any existing relationships between off-ice performance measures and on-ice performance quantified by speed and acceleration. Twenty-seven women (age 19 +/- 1 year; body mass (59.5 +/- 6.8 kg; height 164.6 +/- 6.35 cm; body fat 23.2 +/- 3.9%) who were collegiate synchronized figure skaters volunteered for the investigation. To examine the relationship between off-ice performance and on-ice speed and acceleration, collegiate synchronized skaters were evaluated on various performance tests over a 1-week period. Off-ice tests completed were peak torque for hip abduction and adduction, 40-yard sprint, vertical jump height, 30-second slide …
Stimulating economic growth in the least developed countries: direct cash transfers for the retired via mobile phones
2013
The result of current aid policies is that only a small percentage of foreign aid reaches the poorest of the poor in the least developed countries. Current trends of urbanisation and self-reliance place elderly people in an increasingly difficult situation. This paper aims to stimulate debate by introducing an alternative mechanism for foreign aid. With the help of an economic model, we demonstrate how direct cash transfers to elderly people can spur economic growth. Targeting all elderly people above a certain age minimises selection costs and removes perverse incentives. The use of new mobile phone technologies reduces transaction costs and makes our proposed modality feasible including i…
Optimal Index Tracking Under Transaction Costs and Impulse Control
1998
We apply impulse control techniques to a cash management problem within a mean-variance framework. We consider the strategy of an investor who is trying to minimise both fixed and proportional transaction costs, whilst minimising the tracking error with respect to an index portfolio. The cash weight is constantly fluctuating due to the stochastic inflow and outflow of dividends and liabilities. We show the existence of an optimal strategy and compute it numerically.

Design of a new high energy rear underrun protective device
2008
In recent years the vehicle design field has followed a progressive evolution by focusing its main interest on passive and active safety levels. One of the most injurious cases for the safety of passengers is the crash between a car and a heavy vehicle (truck). Generally, in fact, when such an occurrence happens, the greatest damage is suffered by the passengers of the car. This is because of the considerable structural difference between the two vehicles and the lack of devices to reduce the injuries of the car passengers. In this work, as a consequence of the previous considerations, we deal with the design of a new protective system for heavy vehicles over 3.5 tons. The new rear underrun…
Subglacial to proglacial depositional environments in an Ordovician glacial tunnel valley, Alnif, Morocco
2013
Abstract This paper presents the sedimentary analysis of an exceptional Ordovician glacial tunnel valley in the eastern part of the Anti-Atlas. The valley infill comprises two major glacial erosion surfaces (striated pavements) each overlain by a fining-upward glacial unit. These units are composed of five distinct facies associations, recording the evolution from subglacial to proglacial environments, and an additional sixth facies association, overtopping the tunnel valley infill, and associated with post-glacial environments. The tunnel valley infill also records a transitional environment between the subglacial and proglacial settings, which is compared with the Antarctic ice-sheet marg…
