Selenium: A Cure for Autoimmune Thyroiditis.
2021
Autoimmune thyroiditis (AT) is a disease whose incidence has increased dramatically over the past few decades. In iodine sufficient areas, this pathological condition affects up to 5% of the general population. The higher incidence of AT observed in areas of the world with low-selenium (Se) soils apperas to be the consequence of a reduced activity of the intracellular Sedependent glutathione peroxidase activity. Se is involved, through selenoproteins, in the regulation of intracellular antioxidant, redox and anti-inflammatory processes. As a component of selenoproteins, Se exerts various structural and enzymatic functions. A low Se/high fat diet can cause selenoprotein changes and promote t…
Theory of mercury intrusion in a distribution of unconnected wedge-shaped slits
2004
Effective mercury intrusion in a wedge-shaped slit is gradual, the intruded depth increasing with applied pressure. The Washburn equation must be modified accordingly. It relates the distance, e, separating the three-phase contact lines on the wedge faces to the hydrostatic pressure, P, wedge half-opening angle alpha, mercury surface tension gamma, and contact angle theta: e=(-2gamma/P)cos(theta-alpha) if theta-alpha>pi2. The equations relating the volume of mercury in a single slit to hydrostatic pressure are established. The total volume of mercury V(Hg)(tot)(E(0),e) intruded in a set of unconnected isomorphous slits (same alpha value) with opening width, E, distributed over interval [E(0…
Tailoring a Fashionable Self: Sartorial Practices in an Emerging Market Context
2015
Abstract This study consists in a quantitative analysis of fashion preferences, examining various factors influencing clothing personalization. The first part of the paper sets out the theoretical framework, discussing the historical relationship between the emergence of modernity and the configuration of fashion industry. The study proceeds with detailing the regional context where the empirical research is grounded, paying particular attention to the development and current status of the region’s clothing industry. After presenting the data and the methodology, the paper discusses the empirical findings followed by their interpretation. Based on the results we argue that the level of educ…
A Bayesian Learning Automata-Based Distributed Channel Selection Scheme for Cognitive Radio Networks
2014
We consider a scenario where multiple Secondary Users SUs operate within a Cognitive Radio Network CRN which involves a set of channels, where each channel is associated with a Primary User PU. We investigate two channel access strategies for SU transmissions. In the first strategy, the SUs will send a packet directly without operating Carrier Sensing Medium Access/Collision Avoidance CSMA/CA whenever a PU is absent in the selected channel. In the second strategy, the SUs implement CSMA/CA to further reduce the probability of collisions among co-channel SUs. For each strategy, the channel selection problem is formulated and demonstrated to be a so-called "Potential" game, and a Bayesian Lea…
Trust-based framework for security enhancement of P2PSIP communication systems
2009
Today, Peer-to-Peer SIP based communication systems have attracted much attention from both academia and industry. The decentralized nature of P2P might provide the distributed peer-to-peer communication system without help of the traditional SIP server. However, it comes to the cost of reduced trustworthiness and may cause security problems, e.g. privacy leaks, unpredictable availability, etc. In this paper, we investigate on P2PSIP security issues and propose a subjective based trust model that offers trust services during P2PSIP session establishment. The main issues considered in this model include opinion calculation, opinion maintenance, data confidentiality and integrity, message rou…
Effect of welding and heat treatment on the properties of UHSS used in automotive industry
2021
This paper deals with the undesired effects of the heat treatments on the mechanical properties of (UHSS) Ultra High Strength Steel used nowadays in automotive industry to improve crashworthiness performance of vehicles. The UHSS specimens were extracted from certain parts of the car body and subjected to different heat treatments. Four types of specimens were tested: untreated, welded with metal inert gas welding, heat treated at 800 °C, and heat treated at 1250 °C. All heat-treated specimens showed dramatically reduced values of strength. The results suggest that it is important to follow the official repair manuals avoiding unnecessary welding and improper heat treatments of UHSS. The ex…
Integrated reporting: The mediating role of the board of directors and investor protection on managerial discretion in munificent environments
2018
Is there a relationship between managerial discretion in munificent environments and the propensity to disclose an integrated reporting? Is this relationship contingent on the board of directors and investor protection? For an international sample for 2006–2014, this paper supports the assertion that managers are more able to extract superior perquisites when the level of accumulated cash holding is higher; that is, in munificent contexts. Because of the greater managerial discretion in these contexts, managers show a lower incentive to disclose voluntary information through an integrated report, which decreases the firm's transparency. Nonetheless, the board of directors and the level of i…
Topical Fluoride for Preventing Dental Caries in Children and Adolescents
2012
The use of topically applied fluoride has been widely researched as a means to reduce the risk of dental caries in conjunction with other treatment modalities (mechanical oral hygiene, dietary control, antimicrobial intervention, pit and fissure sealants). There is overwhelming evidence that reports not only the significance and importance of the use of fluoride as a caries-preventive agent, but also how safe fluoride application is when used appropriately, particularly in higher risk individuals and populations. This paper reviews the caries-protective benefits of topical fluoride application in children and adolescents, with an emphasis on the clinical efficacy and safety of the vehicles …
Robust technique for 3D shape reconstruction
2017
Abstract In this paper a robust and simple scheme is presented for three dimensional (3D) shape reconstruction of real object. A novel composite pattern technique is proposed for projecting the light pattern on the object of interest. The proposed scheme reduces the number of patterns by combining the primary color coded channels into one composite format. Our approach uses both spatial and temporal intensity variation for calibration and construction phase. Gamma calibration is considered with the propose scheme. High quality depth map is obtained from the linear light reflected by the shape of object without complex calculations. Experimental results demonstrated that proposed technique i…
Why Real Leisure Really Matters: Incentive Effects on Real Effort in the Laboratory
2013
On-the-job leisure is a pervasive feature of the modern workplace. We studied its impact on work performance in a laboratory experiment by either allowing or restricting Internet access. We used a 2×2 experimental design in which subjects completing real-effort work tasks could earn cash according to either individual- or team-production incentive schemes. Under team pay, production levels were significantly lower when Internet browsing was available than when it was not. Under individual pay, however, no differences in production levels were observed between the treatment in which Internet was available and the treatment in which it was not. In line with standard incentive theory, individu…
