Yttrium and lanthanides in human lung fluids, probing the exposure to atmospheric fallout.

2011

International audience; Inhalation of airborne particles can produce crystallization of phosphatic microcrysts in intraaveolar areas of lungs, sometimes degenerating into pulmonary fibrosis. Results of this study indicate that these pathologies are induced by interactions between lung fluids and inhaled atmospheric dust in people exposed to volcanic dust ejected from Mount Etna in 2001. Here, the lung solid-liquid interaction is evaluated by the distribution of yttrium and lanthanides (YLn) in fluid bronchoalveolar lavages on selected individuals according the classical geochemical approaches. We found that shale-normalised patterns of yttrium and lanthanides have a 'V shaped' feature corre…

Discrete KP Equation and Momentum Mapping of Toda System

2003

Abstract A new approach to discrete KP equation is considered, starting from the Gelfand-Zakhharevich theory for the research of Casimir function for Toda Poisson pencil. The link between the usual approach through the use of discrete Lax operators, is emphasized. We show that these two different formulations of the discrete KP equation are equivalent and they are different representations of the same equations. The relation between the two approaches to the KP equation is obtained by a change of frame in the space of upper truncated Laurent series and translated into the space of shift operators.

Abuse of consumer trust in the digital market and the green market: the case of green washing in the Italian legal system

2022

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to offer some reflection on the abuse of consumer trust and the importance of control of information in the digital market and the green market. The role of the consumer as the arbiter of the market is fundamental. The abuse of consumer confidence depends, in fact, on the spread of stereotyped messages and vague and generic formulas aimed at hiding a dangerous vacuum of protection. In both markets, it is a question of giving the consumer the necessary tools to monitor the transparency of the criteria used by the trader to classify a product according to its characteristics. The Eyjafjallajokull volcanic summit eruption: evidences from ash-leachates analysis and ground deposition fluxes

2012

The Eyjafjallajokull 2010 eruption was an extraordinary event in that it led to widespread over Europe. Volcanic processes which lead to eruptions can be investigated by monitoring a variety of parameters, including the composition of ash leachates. Fine-grained tephra erupted from active vents, and transported through volcanic plumes, can adsorbs, and therefore rapidly scavenge, volatile elements such as S, halogens, and metal species in the form of soluble salts adhering to ash surfaces. Analysis of such water-soluble phases is a suitable complement for the remote sensing of volcanic gases at inaccessible volcanoes, like Eyjafjallajokull. The 2010 Eyjafjallajokull eruption developed in fo…

Solving Two-Person Zero-Sum Stochastic Games With Incomplete Information Using Learning Automata With Artificial Barriers

2021

Learning automata (LA) with artificially absorbing barriers was a completely new horizon of research in the 1980s (Oommen, 1986). These new machines yielded properties that were previously unknown. More recently, absorbing barriers have been introduced in continuous estimator algorithms so that the proofs could follow a martingale property, as opposed to monotonicity (Zhang et al., 2014), (Zhang et al., 2015). However, the applications of LA with artificial barriers are almost nonexistent. In that regard, this article is pioneering in that it provides effective and accurate solutions to an extremely complex application domain, namely that of solving two-person zero-sum stochastic games that…

Scheduling Domestic Shiftable Loads in Smart Grids: A Learning Automata-Based Scheme

2017

In this paper, we consider the problem of scheduling shiftable loads, over multiple users, in smart grids. We approach the problem, which is becoming increasingly pertinent in our present energy-thirsty society, using a novel distributed game-theoretic framework. From a modeling perspective, the distributed scheduling problem is formulated as a game, and in particular, a so-called “Potential” game. This game has at least one pure strategy Nash Equilibrium (NE), and we demonstrate that the NE point is a global optimal point. The solution that we propose, which is the pioneering solution that incorporates the theory of Learning Automata (LA), permits the total supplied loads to approach the p…

Valor de los Ahorros en Impuestos por Deuda en Colombia: Un Estudio Empírico (Value of Debt Tax Shields in Colombia: An Empirical Study)

2011

The English version of this paper can be found at http://ssrn.com/abstract=1919305This paper estimates the value of tax savings, using the method of discounted cash flows for 23 major industrial firms in the Bolsa de Valores de Colombia (Colombian Stock Market) between 2001 and 2010, showing that this value represents on average between 5.74% and 56.73% out of total firm value depending on discount rate for tax savings. Using Data Panel regressions, it also finds that the average leverage of firms is low relative to other countries. Given this fact, we explored the behavior of the total value of the firm, VT and found no evidence that debt creates value.

Light-Induced Protein-Matrix Uncoupling and Protein Relaxation in Dry Samples of Trehalose-Coated MbCO at Room Temperature

2005

In humid samples of trehalose-coated carboxy-myoglobin (MbCO), thermally driven conformational relaxation takes place after photodissociation of the carbon monoxide (CO) molecule at room temperature. In such samples, because of the extreme viscosity of the external matrix, photodissociated CO cannot diffuse out of the protein and explores the whole (proximal and distal side) heme pocket, experiencing averaged protein heme pocket structures, as a result of the presence of Brownian motions. At variance, in very dry samples, a lower portion of the photodissociated CO diffuses from the distal to the proximal heme pocket side probing in nonaveraged structures. We revisit here the flash photolysi…

Uso y funciones de los «hashtags» evidenciales en Twitter

2021

This paper examines evidential hashtags on Twitter. The analyzed hashtags contain constructions of the verb decir (‘to say’) that are preceded by the hash symbol (e.g., #dicen, #sedice, #esodicen, #dicenporahí), which have not been analyzed from the perspective of evidentiality. An exploratory and qualitative study was performed using a sample of 94 tweets that were published over six months. The analysis addresses structural and semantic-pragmatic parameters. According to the results of the analysis, evidential hashtags can transmit reportative, quotative and folklore evidentiality. Furthermore, the evidential meaning of the hashtags is accompanied by pragmatic functions such as attenuatio…

Hypothesis of whiplike motion as a possible traumatizing mechanism in vocal fold vibration.

2003

The mucosal waves on the vibrating vocal folds may move in anterior-posterior, mediolateral and in caudal-cranial direction. This article discusses the possible significance of the vertical movement from the point of view of mechanical stress in phonation and the formation of vocal fold traumas. It is hypothesized that in certain conditions the vocal folds may behave in cranial direction like a quasi-free end of a long lash producing very rapid vibratory waves (e.g. the waves in a whiplash). This could be detrimental to the tissue structure. The role of phonation type in enhancing/diminishing this effect will also be discussed.
