Lebanon and Egypt: The construction of a vital space in women’s writing

2023

This paper try to outline the developments of the literary production of the Mashriq, departing from a gender perspective. Approaching the female literary universe of Lebanon and Egypt entails referring to cultural contexts in which women have historically suffered forms of exclusion and marginalisation, when not outright oppression, and in which solidly patriarchal and hierarchical family structures have often found in religious faith an alibi which justifies and facilitates the perpetration and diffusion of such discrimination. In this context literary writing plays a fundamental role: having been long described and interpreted by the male literary world, women begin to speak their truth …

Locality-Sensitive Hashing for Massive String-Based Ontology Matching

2014

This paper reports initial research results related to the use of locality-sensitive hashing (LSH) for string-based matching of big ontologies. Two ways of transforming the matching problem into a LSH problem are proposed and experimental results are reported. The performed experiments show that using LSH for ontology matching could lead to a very fast matching process. The quality of the alignment achieved in these experiments is comparable to state-of-the-art matchers, but much faster. Further research is needed to find out whether the use of different metrics or specific hardware would improve the results. peerReviewed

A Portfolio Problem with Uncertainty

2000

In this paper we present two models for cash flow matching with an uncertain level of payments at each due date. To solve the problem of minimising the initial investment we use the scenario method proposed by Dembo, and the robust optimisation method proposed by Mulvey et al. We unify these optimisation methods in a general co-ordinated model that guarantees a match under every scenario. This general model is also a multi-objective programming problem. We illustrate this methodology in a problem with several scenarios.

VIAGENS E LEITURAS JAPONESAS EM RAKUSHISHA, DE ADRIANA LISBOA

2014

Abstract: I…

Reexamining Different Factors of the Resonance-Enhanced High-Order Harmonic Generation in Atomic and Nanoparticle Laser-Induced Tin Plasmas

2021

We reexamine the resonance enhancement of a single harmonic emission during the propagation of ultrafast pulses through atomic and nanoparticle tin-containing laser-induced plasma (LIP). We compare the single atomic Sn and Sn nanoparticle plasmas to demonstrate a distinction in the enhancement factor of the single harmonic in the case of fixed and tunable near-infrared pulses. The analysis of the dynamics of Sn LIP shows the range of optimal delays between heating and driving pulses (130–180 ns), at which the maximal harmonic yield can be achieved. The enhancements of the 17th and 18th harmonics of 806 nm pulses were analyzed in the case of single-color and two-color pumps of LIP, showing u…

Broadband tuning of a long-cavity all-fiber mode locked Thulium-doped fiber laser using an acousto-optic bandpass filter

2019

A long-cavity passively mode-locked thulium-doped all-fiber laser is reported incorporating a tapered acousto-optic tunable bandpass filter (AOTBF). The operation of the AOTBF relies on the intermodal coupling between core and cladding modes when a flexural acoustic wave propagates along an 80-microm tapered fiber. The filter works in transmission and exhibits a 3-dB bandwidth of 9.02 nm with an insertion loss of 3.4 dB. The laser supports ultrashort pulse generation at a low repetition rate of 784.93 kHz. Optical pulses with 2.43 nm of optical bandwidth and 2.1 ps pulse duration were obtained in a broad tuning range from 1824.77 to 1905.16 nm.

Helium gas pressure cell for pressures up to 1 kbar (0.1 GPa) in conjunction with the cold head of a closed-cycle He refrigerator

1997

A helium gas pressure cell for pressures up to 1 kbar (0.1 GPa) has been developed in conjunction with a closed-cycle He refrigerator allowing variable temperatures between 15 and 300 K. Both cell and refrigerator are equipped with optical windows suitable for photophysical measurements, such as temperature- and pressure-dependent absorption spectroscopy or laser flash photolysis. Examples of measurements on iron(II) spin-crossover systems are given. In these compounds, comparatively small external pressures induce significant changes in the thermodynamic equilibrium as well as in the relaxation dynamics.

A Brief Review on the Resistance-in-Series Model in Membrane Bioreactors (MBRs)

2019

The cake layer deposited on the membrane modules of membrane bioreactors (MBRs), especially under a submerged configuration, represents a relevant and fundamental mechanism deeply influencing the development of membrane fouling. It negatively affects the total resistance to filtration, while exerting a positive effect as a “pre-filter„ promoting the “dynamic membrane„ that protects the physical membrane from internal fouling. These two opposite phenomena should be properly managed, where the submerged membranes are usually subjected to a periodical cake layer removal through ordinary (permeate backwashing and air scouring) and/or irregular cleaning actions (manual ph…

Basic Physical-Chemical and Sensorial Evaluation of Some Fermented Mashes Produced from Wheat, Husked Millet, Barley Malt and Oat

2012

Abstract Fermented mashes based on different cereal grist are a healthy and nutritious beverage, a source for new functional products with beneficial effects on human health. These mashes are a thick consistency and sour-sweet taste, different colors depending on the ingredients and method of preparation. In this study were determined the main physical and chemical characteristics (pH, volatile and total acidity, total and soluble dry substances, alcohol concentration, dynamic viscosity) and was made sensorial analysis of some boiled aqueous mashes obtained from wheat, husked millet, barley malt and oat. Mashes were fermented at 30 °C with a mixed culture of mesophilic cheese lactic acid ba…
