Control of the Magnetic Configuration of Ferromagnetic Nanostructures Across the Structural Phase Transition of Vanadium Dioxide

We investigate the effect of the structural phase transition in VO 2 in magnetoelastically coupled heterostructures of VO 2 and Ni. Continuous and nano-patterned Ni layers were used, and we found reversible and reproducible magnetic domain switching induced by the VO 2 structural phase transition. The magnetic states of the nano-patterned ferromagnetic elements were dominated by topographic features which generated strong pinning but still allowed for a reversible switching between the states. Ultrafast electron transfer in photosynthesis: reduced pheophytin and quinone interaction mediated by conical intersections.

The mechanism of electron transfer (ET) from reduced pheophytin (Pheo(-)) to the primary stable photosynthetic acceptor, a quinone (Q) molecule, is addressed by using high-level ab initio computations and realistic molecular models. The results reveal that the ET process involving the (Pheo(-) + Q) and (Pheo + Q(-)) oxidation states can be essentially seen as an ultrafast radiationless transition between the two hypersurfaces taking place via conical intersections (CIs). The Disorienting Aesthetics of Mashed-Up Anthropocene Environments

This paper describes the disorienting aesthetics of some environments that are characteristic of the Anthropocene. We refer to these environments as 'mashed-up' and present three dimensions - phenomenological, epistemological and narrative - of the aesthetic disorientation they can trigger. We then advance the suggestion that a rich, nuanced and meaningful aesthetic experience of mashed-up Anthropocene environments (MAEs) calls for a mode of appreciation grounded on performative practices of aesthetic familiarisation with particular MAEs and entities and processes thereof. Ultrafast Fault-Tolerant Long-Distance Quantum Communication with Static Linear Optics

We present an in-depth analysis regarding the error resistance and optimization of our all-optical Bell measurement and ultrafast long-distance quantum communication scheme proposed in [arXiv:1503.06777]. In order to promote our previous proposal from loss- to fault-tolerance, we introduce a general and compact formalism that can also be applied to other related schemes (including non-all-optical ones such as [PRL 112, 250501]). Visualizing a protein quake with time-resolved X-ray scattering at a free-electron laser

We describe a method to measure ultrafast protein structural changes using time-resolved wide-angle X-ray scattering at an X-ray free-electron laser. We demonstrated this approach using multiphoton excitation of the Blastochloris viridis photosynthetic reaction center, observing an ultrafast global conformational change that arises within picoseconds and precedes the propagation of heat through the protein. This provides direct structural evidence for a 'protein quake': the hypothesis that proteins rapidly dissipate energy through quake-like structural motions. peerReviewed

Abstract Cake layer deposition on a membrane surface can determine both external and internal membrane fouling through negatively affecting the total filtration resistance while exerting a positive effect as a pre-filter. Membranes are usually subjected to a periodic cake layer removal through routine physical cleaning, specifically permeate backwashing of hollow fiber membranes, or enhanced cleaning through, for example, chemically-enhanced backwashing. Averages of $b$-hadron, $c$-hadron, and $\tau$-lepton properties as of summer 2016

This article reports world averages of measurements of $b$-hadron, $c$-hadron, and $\tau$-lepton properties obtained by the Heavy Flavor Averaging Group using results available through summer 2016. For the averaging, common input parameters used in the various analyses are adjusted (rescaled) to common values, and known correlations are taken into account. The averages include branching fractions, lifetimes, neutral meson mixing parameters, \CP~violation parameters, parameters of semileptonic decays and CKM matrix elements.
