Late Holocene Asian summer monsoon variability reflected byδ18O in tree-rings from Tibetan junipers
2011
[1] Recent warming in High Asia might have a strong impact on Asian summer monsoon variability with consequences for the hydrological cycle. Based on correlations between climate data, the tree-ring δ18O of high-elevation junipers is an indicator of August precipitation. Thus, our 800-year long annually resolved oxygen isotope series reflects long-term variations in summer monsoon activity on the southern Tibetan plateau. Summer precipitation was reduced during 13th–15th centuries and since the 19th century, whereas the Little Ice Age period (15th–19th century) was rather moist. The late 20th century was among the driest periods during the past 800 years, showing a tendency to slightly wett…
GrassPlot v. 2.00 : first update on the database of multi-scale plant diversity in Palaearctic grasslands
2019
Abstract: GrassPlot is a collaborative vegetation-plot database organised by the Eurasian Dry Grassland Group (EDGG) and listed in the Global Index of Vegetation-Plot Databases (GIVD ID EU-00-003). Following a previous Long Database Report (Dengler et al. 2018, Phyto- coenologia 48, 331–347), we provide here the first update on content and functionality of GrassPlot. The current version (GrassPlot v. 2.00) contains a total of 190,673 plots of different grain sizes across 28,171 independent plots, with 4,654 nested-plot series including at least four grain sizes. The database has improved its content as well as its functionality, including addition and harmonization of header data (land use,…
Teleasentajien viime vuosikymmenet : haastattelututkimus teleasentajien kokemuksista työnsä muuttumisesta 1970-2010-lukujen aikana
2016
Tutkielma on jatkoa tekijän kandidaatintutkielmalle. Tutkimus on toteutettu haastattelemalla seitsemää 45-85-vuotiasta miestä, jotka ovat työskennelleet telealalla yli 30 vuoden ajan. Heistä suurin osa on aloittanut työuransa 1970-luvulla. Haastate…
A Russian Radical Conservative Challenge to the Liberal Global Order : Aleksandr Dugin
2019
The chapter examines Russian political theorist Aleksandr Dugin’s (b. 1962) challenge to the Western liberal order. Even though Dugin’s project is in many ways a theoretical epitome of Russia’s contemporary attempt to profile itself as a regional great power with a political and cultural identity distinct from the liberal West, Dugin can also be read in a wider context as one of the currently most prominent representatives of the culturally and intellectually oriented international New Right. The chapter introduces Dugin’s role on the Russian right-wing political scene and his international networks, Russian neo-Eurasianism as his ideological footing, and his more recent “fourth political t…
Ape in India
2021
The honey bee is mentioned in some ancient Indian religious texts as a symbol of the sacrificial act; it also appears in some myths throughout Indian religious history with meanings partly related to representations of the divine feminine.
Chinese Green Tea in Mali, Cultural Mobility and African Agency in the Global South
2020
Abstract The paper offers insights from ethnographic research that reach beyond general assumptions of the working of globalization, especially in the Global South. It examines the ways in which the arrival of products made in China, namely green tea, has influenced the everyday of people in Mali, modifying consumption practices and the business landscape. Chinese green tea, which is known in the Sahel countries of West Africa since the 19th century, has gradually found more and more consumers in Mali, so that from the 2000s onwards tons of green tea arrive every month in the country. Most Malians, the paper shows, consume green tea several times a day and identify with the beverage to such…
Another Look at Aspect in Thai
2007
The aim of the paper is twofold. The first aim is to analyse aspect in Thai in the framework of the selection-theory approach developed by Breu and Sasse (1991). The second aim is to study all possible co-occurrenc;es of each of the three aspect markers: lεεw, kamlaƞ, yùu with the four classes of verbs and with the verbs occurring with other strategies within the five classes of states of affairs. It was found that the selectional approach chosen helped explaining the inceptive-stative state of affairs in Thai clearly. It also pointed out that the Thai aspectuality focused on the initial boundary and terminative boundary of the state of affairs. It is here that combinations of the three asp…
Liquidity Synchronization, Its Determinants and Outcomes under Economic Growth Volatility: Evidence from Emerging Asian Economies
2021
This study investigates the country-level determinants of liquidity synchronization and degrees of liquidity synchronization during economic growth volatility. As a non-diversifiable risk factor, liquidity co-movement shock spreads market-wide and thus disrupts the overall functioning of the financial market. Firms in Asian markets operate in legal and regulatory environments distinct from those of firms analyzed in the previous literature. Comprehensive analyses of liquidity synchronicity in emerging markets are limited. A major knowledge gap pertaining to Asian emerging markets serves as the primary motivation for this study. Seven Asian emerging economies are selected from the MSCI emerg…
Small angle neutron scattering study of the quaternary structure of haemocyanin of Rapana thomasiana
1996
Abstract Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments were performed on a series of solutions of haemocyanin (Hc) of Rapana thomasiana . In a first series of solutions, by changing the external contrast a model of the molecule that is apparently in disagreement with electron microscopy (EM) measurements was obtained. The apparent disagreement was resolved by performing experiments on a series of variable protein concentration solutions in D 2 O. The physical parameters of the model, extrapolated to zero concentration, are in excellent agreement with the EM results obtained on samples more dilute than those examined with SANS.
Verbalization/Insubordination: A Diachronic Syntactic Isogloss in Northeast Asia
2021
Abstract The present paper discusses one of diachronic syntactic isoglosses in Northeast Asia. This study addresses in particular the process of renewal of finite verbal forms through non-finite forms, which is very prominent in different families in Northeast Asia (Tungusic, Mongolic, Turkic, Japanese and Korean). It will be shown that the processes of verbalization (finitization of participles and nominalizations) is a general areal feature in Northeast Asia, but recognition of this diachronic isogloss has been partially hampered by differences in research traditions. Apart from similarities (finitization of participles/nominalizations, displacement and modalization of the erstwhile finit…
