Time in Associative Learning: A Review on Temporal Maps
2021
Ability to recall the timing of events is a crucial aspect of associative learning. Yet, traditional theories of associative learning have often overlooked the role of time in learning association and shaping the behavioral outcome. They address temporal learning as an independent and parallel process. Temporal Coding Hypothesis is an attempt to bringing together the associative and non-associative aspects of learning. This account proposes temporal maps, a representation that encodes several aspects of a learned association, but attach considerable importance to the temporal aspect. A temporal map helps an agent to make inferences about missing information by applying an integration mechan…
Hidden Markov Model Based Machine Learning for mMTC Device Cell Association in 5G Networks
2019
Massive machine-type communication (mMTC) is expected to play a pivotal role in emerging 5G networks. Considering the dense deployment of small cells and the existence of heterogeneous cells, an MTC device can discover multiple cells for association. Under traditional cell association mechanisms, MTC devices are typically associated with an eNodeB with highest signal strength. However, the selected eNodeB may not be able to handle mMTC requests due to network congestion and overload. Therefore, reliable cell association would provide a smarter solution to facilitate mMTC connections. To enable such a solution, a hidden Markov model (HMM) based machine learning (ML) technique is proposed in …
Innovative Teaching Strategies in Accounting
2018
Accounting in higher education is a practical subject and teaching financial accounting has nowadays become a challenge. Professional organizations and corporate employers prefer to hire students with critical thinking skills, communication skills, technical skills, and analytical skills. Accounting students often have a negative attitude towards the subject and struggle to understand core concepts of accounting standards. Finding and using new and innovative methods of teaching accounting is a crucial skill for teachers. Certain methods and approaches can truly enhance the learning process, and done right, applying innovative learning and attention-management techniques to classes is a win…
Female Leadership in Software Projects—A Preliminary Result on Leadership Style and Project Context Factors
2017
Women have been shown to be effective leaders in many team-based situations. However, it is also well-recognized that women are underrepresented in engineering and technology areas, which leads to wasted efforts and a lack of diversity in professional organizations. Although studies about gender and leadership are rich, research focusing on engineering-specific activities, are scarce. To react on this gap, we explored the experience of female leaders of software development projects and possible context factors that influence leadership effectiveness. The study was conducted as a longitudinal multiple case study. Data was collected from survey, interviews, observation and project reports. I…
From atomic to molecular Bose-Einstein condensates: a physically realizable term-crossing model for cold atom association
2010
Using an exact third-order NL di®erential equation for the molecular state probability, we develop a variational approach which enables us to construct highly accurate analytic approximations describing time dynamics of the coupled atom-molecular system in each of the interaction regimes. We show that the approximation describing time evolution of the molecular state probability both in the weak interaction limit and in the large detuning regime of the strong interaction limit can be written as a sum of two distinct terms; the ¯rst one, being a solution to a limit ¯rst-order NL equation, e®ectively describes the process of the molecule formation while the second one, being a scaled solution…
Conditioned orienting (alpha) and delayed behavioral and evoked neural responses during classical conditioning
1989
A differentiation of short-latency (alpha) and long-latency (delayed) classically conditioned behavioral and evoked neural (hippocampal) responses was attempted. Further, facilitation and retardation of these responses were studied in an experimental design in which 10 paired conditioning sessions either preceded (CC-CO group) or followed (CO-CC group) 10 randomly unpaired presentations of conditioned stimuli (CS) and unconditioned stimuli (UCS). A 2024-ms tone (1000 Hz) was delivered directly through a miniature earphone to the left ear, eliciting an orienting head movement ('alpha' response) to the left. The unconditioned stimulus (UCS) was a direct 1024-ms stimulation of the lateral hypo…
The self-organizing consciousness
2003
We propose that the isomorphism generally observed between the representations composing our momentary phenomenal experience and the structure of the world is the end-product of a progressive organization that emerges thanks to elementary associative processes that take our conscious representations themselves as the stuff on which they operate, a thesis that we summarize in the concept of Self-Organizing Consciousness (SOC).
A Research Review on Building Information Modeling in Construction―An Area Ripe for IS Research
2012
Published version of article of an article in the journal: Communications of the Association for Information Systems. Also available from the publisher : http://http://aisel.aisnet.org/cais/vol31/iss1/10/ This article presents a review of the research on Building Information Modeling (BIM) in construction, with the aim of identifying areas in this domain where IS research can contribute. The concept of BIM comprises an infrastructure of IT tools supporting collaborative and integrated design, assembly, and operation of buildings. This integrated construction approach, with all stakeholders editing or retrieving information from commonly shared models, requires major changes to well-establis…
Estimates, trends, and drivers of the global burden of type 2 diabetes attributable to PM2·5 air pollution, 1990–2019: an analysis of data from the G…
2022
Background: Experimental and epidemiological studies indicate an association between exposure to particulate matter (PM) air pollution and increased risk of type 2 diabetes. In view of the high and increasing prevalence of diabetes, we aimed to quantify the burden of type 2 diabetes attributable to PM2·5 originating from ambient and household air pollution. Methods: We systematically compiled all relevant cohort and case-control studies assessing the effect of exposure to household and ambient fine particulate matter (PM2·5) air pollution on type 2 diabetes incidence and mortality. We derived an exposure–response curve from the extracted relative risk estimates using the MR-BRT (meta-regress…
Tradition and modernity: new sound proposals from the music schools of the federation of musical societies of the valencian community
2019
Background: The Federation of Musical Societies of the Valencian Community (FSMCV) is a democratic association created 50 years ago, which represents and supports the 550 associations that make it up, with the aim of promoting, disseminating and teaching music. It promotes associationism and provides society with a way of developing cultural articulation, mainly developing its activities within the Valencian Community, although its national and international activity is very remarkable. Methodology: This article based on a prospective study using a qualitative methodology analyzes one of the proposals made to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the FSMCV through the use and application of t…
