1 The effects of cholinergic and purinergic stimulation on action potential, force of contraction and 86Rb efflux were investigated in cat atrial and/or ventricular heart muscle. 2 Acetylcholine and carbachol exerted a concentration-dependent negative inotropic effect in cat atrial heart muscle. Background: Percutaneous left atrial appendage closure (LAAC) exposes to the risk of device thrombosis in patients with atrial fibrillation who frequently have a contraindication to full anticoagulation. A simple method of recording right atrial tension from the Langendorff perfused rabbit has been described; it is based on the “transverse” method of recording cardiac contractions described by Beckett (1970). 2. 1 The concentrations of noradrenaline and adrenaline in various organs, arterial plasma and venous outflow from isolated hearts of adult chickens have been determined. 2 The relative adrenaline concentrations (percentage of the sum of noradrenaline and adrenaline) in the heart (33%), spleen (16%) and brain (26%) were higher than those found in mammalian organs. Embolic stroke, sinus rhythm and left atrial mechanical function

A 64-year-old man manifested a stroke two years after restoration of sinus rhythm through a radiofrequency catheter ablation. Transesophageal echo- cardiography demonstrated the presence of a thrombus in the left atrial appendage. Left atrial volumes and different parameters of atrial emptying showed that, de- spite the persistence of the sinus rhythm, atrial mechanical function was severely impaired. After atrial ablation procedures echocardiography can be useful to stratify pa- tients according to their risk of developing embolic events and hence be of help in deciding whether or not discontinuation of anticoagulant therapy is the appropri- ate choice.

Speckle tracking analysis: a new tool for left atrial function analysis in systemic hypertension: an overview

Speckle tracking echocardiography (STE) is an imaging technique applied to the analysis of left atrial function. STE provides a non-Doppler, angle-independent and objective quantification of left atrial myocardial deformation. Data regarding feasibility, accuracy and clinical applications of left atrial strain are rapidly gathering. This review describes the fundamental concepts of left atrial STE, illustrates its pathophysiological background and discusses its emerging role in systemic arterial hypertension.

Are double potentials markers of a specific zone of the atrioventricular junction in the isolated rabbit heart?

A study is made of the characteristics of the atrial potentials recorded in the Koch triangle and its proximity, their variations on modifying the site of cardiac pacing, and their usefulness as markers of a distinct zone of the AV junction. In 12 isolated and perfused rabbit heart preparations an analysis was made of the endocardial atrial electrograms recorded with a multiple electrode positioned in the AV junction.
