A possible association between the CCK-AR gene and persistent auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia.

AbstractRecent studies have suggested that DNA variations in the CCK-AR gene might predispose individuals to schizophrenia and particularly to auditory hallucinations (AH). The aim of this study is to assess the association between AH, using a specific scale for AH in schizophrenia (PSYRATS), and the CCK-AR polymorphism at 779 in a Spanish sample. A total of 105 DSM-IV schizophrenic patients with AH and 93 unrelated controls were studied. Aim of the study is to evaluate the effects of Prostaglandin E-1 (PGE-1) in patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD) at the 2nd b stage Fontaines classification. Effects of REM sleep awakenings and related wakening paradigms on the ultradian sleep cycle and the symptoms in depression.

In 1975 Vogel and coworkers published their classical study where they compared selective rapid eye movement (REM) sleep deprivation by brief awakenings to a control intervention paradigm in depressed patients. The superior antidepressive impact of the first procedure was attributed to the REM pressure accumulating during the treatment period. The laborious procedure and the considerable effort necessary to evaluate the sleep profiles in real time have prevented similar experiments so far. Based on artificial neural networks we developed a software for the real time detection of REM sleep. Effects of voluntary changes in breathing frequency on respiratory comfort

Previous experiments on voluntary breathing have suggested that spontaneous breathing is partly determined by the minimization of respiratory sensations. However, during instructed breathing, respiratory sensations may be confounded with difficulty in achieving the prescribed pattern. Testing utricular function by means of on-axis rotation

Subjective visual vertical (SVV) estimation during on-axis rotation provides an efficient screening test of utricle function. Detached and distracted: ERP correlates of altered attentional function in depersonalisation.

Abstract Depersonalisation (DP) is a psychological condition marked by feelings of disembodiment. In everyday life, it is frequently associated with concentration problems. The present study used visual event-related potentials (ERPs) in a Posner-type spatial cueing task with valid, invalid and spatially neutral cues to delineate the potential neurophysiological correlates of these concentration problems. Evoked potential study in facio-scapulo-humeral muscular dystrophy.

Nerve conduction velocities (NCVs), somatosensory (SEPs) and auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were recorded in 9 patients with facio-scapulo-humeral dystrophy (FSHD) and in 20 age-matched controls. In FSHD patients a significant increase of the nerve distal sensory latencies and of the absolute SEP latencies revealed a subclinical involvement of the afferent sensory pathways, as well as the abnormal slowing of the later components of the BAEPs, pointed to a central auditory dysfunction. Automatic SCSB analysis of motor and autonomic nervous functions compared with sleep stages

All-night recordings of respiration, ballistocardiogram, and body movements were obtained using the static charge-sensitive bed (SCSB) and automatically analysed data were compared with sleep stages. The mean sum of eight SCSB variability parameters was lowest in slow wave sleep (SWS), higher during stage 2 (S2), and highest in REM sleep. The sum scores of the parameters with the highest correlations with the EEG data were classified into quiet (QS), intermediate (IS) and active (AS) states. SCSB signals during wakefulness, stage 1 and REM sleep were mostly scored as AS, whereas in S2 and especially in SWS they were scored as QS or IS. Precursors of the evoked K-complex in event-related brain potentials in stage 2 sleep.

The aim of the study was to examine precursors of the evoked K-complex as manifested in event-related brain potentials (ERPs) during stage 2 sleep. ERPs to infrequent deviant tones of 1100 and 2000 Hz and immediately preceding frequent standard tones of 1000 Hz were compared between trials containing and trials not containing a K-complex (KC trials, NO KC trials, respectively) to the deviant tones. The N350 wave to the deviant tones was markedly larger during the KC than during the NO KC trials. Also the P210 wave to the 2000 Hz deviant tone showed the same phenomenon.
