Meta-analysis of the increase in height in maxillary sinus elevations with osteotome
2011
Objectives: To compare the different variations of sinus elevation techniques with osteotomes, to evaluate the increase in height achieved, and to quantify the osseointegration periods and the success rates for the implants placed. Study Design: A meta-analytic study with descriptive statistics was carried out on sinus elevations using osteotomes, analyzing a total of 11 articles published between the years 2003 and 2008. Results: Summers’ classic technique for performing sinus elevations with osteotomes differs from the current techniques being used with respect to the use of drills, the manner in which the sinus floor is fractured and how the sinus membrane is lifted, and especially on th…
Simultaneous and delayed direct sinus lift versus conventional implants : retrospective study with 5-years minimum follow-up
2018
Background To compare the radiological parameters and success of posterior maxillary direct sinus lift with simultaneous or delayed implant placement, or implant placement in native bone, after a minimum follow-up period of 5 years. Material and Methods A retrospective cohort study was carried out in a university clinic, selecting patients subjected to implant treatment in the posterior maxilla between the years 2005 and 2011. The patients were divided into three groups: 1) implants placed in native bone; 2) direct sinus lift with simultaneous implant placement; and 3) direct sinus lift with delayed implant placement. Bone crest level, bone loss, vertical bone gain, and implant success and …
Arterial Stiffness and Its Relationship to Cardiorespiratory Fitness in Children and Young Adults with a Fontan Circulation
2019
There are no previous studies on arterial stiffness and its associations with cardiorespiratory fitness in young Fontan patients. Therefore, we examined the arterial stiffness and its relationship to cardiorespiratory fitness in children and young adults with a Fontan circulation. Altogether, 17 Fontan patients and 26 healthy controls (16 females and 27 males aged 8–40 years) participated in this cross-sectional study. The cardiorespiratory fitness was assessed by cardiopulmonary exercise testing on a cycle ergometer and was defined as the standard deviation scores (SDS) of peak oxygen uptake per body mass (VO2peak/kg) based on the national reference values and assessed with cardiopulmonary…

Long-term outcome of dental implants after maxillary augmentation with and without bone grafting
2016
Background: This study aims to evaluate the technique of sinus bone reformation, which consists of elevating the sinus membrane and placement the implant without bone graft, compared with the widely-used technique involving raising the maxillary sinus and grafting, using animal hydroxyapatite as the filler, while simultaneously fixing the implants. Material and Methods: This is a retrospective study on two groups of patients who underwent elevation of the sinus membrane and simultaneous placement of the implant. The grafting technique was applied to one group, while the other had no graft. An alveolar ridge height of 4 to 7 mm was necessary. Radiological control was undertaken at 6 months a…
Ambulatory blood pressure and arterial stiffness web-based telemonitoring in patients at cardiovascular risk. First results of the VASOTENS (Vascular…
2019
The VASOTENS Registry is an international telehealth-based repository of 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitorings (ABPM) obtained through an oscillometric upper-arm BP monitor allowing combined estimation of some vascular biomarkers. The present paper reports the results obtained in 1200 participants according to different categories of CV risk. Individual readings were averaged for each recording and 24-hour mean of brachial and aortic systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), pulse wave velocity (PWV), and augmentation index (AIx) obtained. Peripheral and central BP, PWV and AIx values were increased in older participants (SBP only) and in case of hypertension (SBP and DBP).…
Melatonin enhances vertical bone augmentation in rat calvaria secluded spaces.
2015
Background Melatonin has many roles, including bone remodeling and osseointegration of dental implants. The topical application of melatonin facilitated bone regeneration in bone defects. We evaluated the effects of topical application of melatonin on vertical bone augmentation in rat calvaria secluded spaces. Material and Methods In total, 12 male Fischer rats were used and two plastic caps were fixed in the calvarium. One plastic cap was filled with melatonin powder and the other was left empty. Results Newly generated bone at bone defects and within the plastic caps was evaluated using micro-CT and histological sections. New bone regeneration within the plastic cap was increased signific…
Chest Surgery for Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Individuals
2018
Chest surgery can greatly facilitate the experience of living in a gender role. For transfeminine chest surgery, most surgeons recommend a 12-month period of feminizing hormone therapy prior to breast augmentation. For those who already have some breast volume due to hormone treatment, lipofilling can be a good option. Transmasculine chest surgery includes mastectomy and creation of a male chest. Preoperative parameters to be evaluated include breast volume, degree of excess skin, nipple-areola complex size and position, and skin elasticity. The algorithm the authors developed and modified can help choose from 5 techniques, resulting in an aesthetically pleasing male chest.
Treatment of Iatrogenic Functional or Morphologic Bladder Loss
1988
From 1984 to 1986, six children from 4 to 13 years of age, received a bladder augmentation by ileocecal cystoplasty (Mainz-pouch technique) because of an iatrogenic functional or morphologic bladder loss. Indications for operation were incontinence due to the low bladder capacity or threat to the upper urinary tract due to ureteral obstruction or vesicorenal reflux. Two of the children had already undergone supravesical urinary diversion by sigmoid conduit. After a follow-up period of 2 to 19 months, (mean 11 months), five of the six children are completely continent. One boy with a known weak sphincter still has slight, but decreasing, enuresis nocturna in periods of complete filling of th…
Rhabdomyosarcoma of the bladder, prostate or vagina: the role of surgery
2003
Rhabdomyosarcoma of pelvic organs is not common enough for many people to develop large series. However, the authors from Mainz retrospectively analysed 107 children with this condition, and suggest that primary chemotherapy followed by radical surgery yields excellent cure rates. OBJECTIVE To retrospectively analyse the outcome of children with rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) of the bladder, prostate or vagina who were treated with chemotherapy, with or without radical surgery or additional radiotherapy, at our institution since 1968. PATIENTS AND METHODS From a total of 107 children with RMS seen between 1968 and December 2001, 22 (mean age 5.9, range 0.5–18) had RMS of bladder/prostate or vagina.…
