Inhibitory Effects of Various Extracts of Argentine Plant Species on Free-radical-mediated Reactions and Human Neutrophil Functions

1996

Extracts of Argentine plant species used in folk medicine were evaluated for their antioxidant properties and ability to influence human neutrophil functions, including superoxide anion release and degranulation. The infusion and methanol extract of Achyrocline flaccida, and the infusion of Pterocaulon polystachium exhibited chain-breaking antioxidant activity in Fe 2+ /ascorbate-induced lipid peroxidation of rat liver microsomal fractions and scavenged peroxyl radicals in an aqueous assay system. Nevertheless their superoxide scavenging ability was lower. The dichloromethane extracts of Phyllanthus sellowianus, Achyrocline flaccida, Gamochaeta simplicicaulis, Pterocaulon polystachium and E…

A potential host and virus targeting tool against COVID-19: Chemical characterization, antiviral, cytoprotective, antioxidant, respiratory smooth mus…

2023

COronaVIrus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a newly emerging infectious disease that spread across the world, caused by the novel coronavirus Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome CoronaVirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Despite the advancements in science that led to the creation of the vaccine, there is still an urgent need for new antiviral drugs effective against SARS-CoV-2. This study aimed to investigate the antiviral effect of Paulownia tomentosa Steud extract against SARS-CoV-2 and to evaluate its antioxidant properties, including respiratory smooth muscle relaxant effects. Our results showed that P. tomentosa extract can inhibit viral replication by directly interacting with both the 3-chymotrypsin-like…

Brīvības jēdziena primaritāte Paulu Freiri darbos

2020

Phytophthora Root and Collar Rot of Paulownia, a New Disease for Europe

2021

Paulownia species are fast growing trees native to China, which are being grown in managed plantings in several European countries for the production of wood and biomasses. In 2018, wilting, stunting, leaf yellowing, and collapse, as a consequence of root and crown rot, were observed in around 40% of trees of a 2-year-old planting of Paulownia elongata × P. fortunei in Calabria (Southern Italy). Two species of Phytophthora were consistently recovered from roots, basal stem bark, and rhizosphere soil of symptomatic trees and were identified as Ph. nicotianae and Ph. palmivora on the basis of both morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of rDNA ITS sequences. Koch’s postulates…

Assessing the economic profitability of Paulownia as a biomass crop in Southern Mediterranean area

2022

The increase of renewable energy production worldwide, occurred in the last years, is also attributable to some agroforestry species cultivated according to the short rotation coppice technique. Although these species are able of enhancing abandoned or marginal land leading to numerous environmental benefits, an increasing number of farmers are introducing them in place of agricultural crops. Therefore, since for a farmer economic sustainability is one of the main factors to introduce a biomass crop, the study aimed at evaluating the profitability of Paulownia, a species that has been spreading in recent years. In particular, an economic analysis has been carried out in a Southern Italian f…

Two New Retigerane-Type Sesterterpenoids from the Lichen Leprocaulon microscopicum

2016

International audience; Two new sesterterpenes, 1 and 2, have been isolated from the lichen Leprocaulon microscopicum. In addition to classic chromatographic methods, a liquid-liquid chromatography technique, namely centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC) was applied for the purification of compound 2. The structures were determined by analyses of mass spectrometry and 1D- and 2D-NMR data. The relative configuration of the isolated compounds was assigned on the basis of 2D-NOESY experiments. The two compounds possess a rare pentacyclic carbon skeleton typical for lichen metabolism, and quite unusual in the vegetal kingdom.

L’occupation du premier âge du Fer du Clos de Roque à Saint-Maximin-la-Sainte-Baume (Var)

2016
